Lifeboat There are one hundred people aboard a huge ship sailing around
the world. They are having a lot of fun. They have all gotten to know each other and are friends. One night as they are singing
and dancing together, suddenly there is a huge blast. Only seven people survive. They begin to run towards the lifeboat on the side
of the ship. There is only one lifeboat and it only holds five people, and no more than five. The ship is sinking fast. The seven survivors all look at each other. They know each other and have been friends. They know that only five out of the seven will get
into the lifeboat. They also know that two of them will not go. They all want to go. It is up to you to decide which ones get into the
lifeboat and which ones stay on the sinking ship. Each person has the chance to make a statement about themselves, telling why they should be allowed onto the lifeboat. Here are the people.
Choose five.

I am Mary. I am a few years older than the rest of the group. I am a teacher. People already feel that I can take control of a
situation and help calm others. Although I am not friendly and
agreeable, I have helped to quiet the group’s nervousness and have settled an argument between Don and Linda.
Even though no one seems close to me, I feel I would be a valuable person
because I can organise well and solve problems.

I am Hazel, a black student in Home Economics. I know a lot about nutrition and how
to share food without waste. I am efficient to the
point of being bossy.

I am Joe, a clean-cut husky rugby player and the star centre of the hockey team. I am the only one
able to life all the people onto the lifeboat. I also stopped a fight
between two others. I have already been reprimanded by Hazel for pinching a chocolate from the limited food supply.

I am Nancy, Bill’s wife. Generally I have a pleasant personality. However I have been the most
nervous and upset of the group. My temperamental and excitable mood is partly due to the fact that I am expecting a
baby in two months.

I am Bill, Nancy’s husband. I am a medical student. I have had two
years of medical study, three summers in a camp as a medical
director and close association with my father who is a doctor. I refuse to stay unless Nancy stays. Also I have a medical kit with first aid supplies. I also have drugs like tik and dagga
which I use regularly.

I am Don, a happy, playful person. My smile, lovely guitar music and funny
jokes have helped to improve everyone’s mood. I get along well
with everybody in the group. I want to get on the lifeboat really badly. I come from a wealthy family and I offer everyone a lot of money to
choose me as one of the five people.

I am Jack, a sailor. I know all there is to know about sailing in the ocean. I know
how to run a boat and repair it if necessary. I have practical know-how, although I have no formal education. I did not finish high school and I am a very angry person. I am constantly
fighting with others about everything. I especially put down Mary and Don. I am
always causing fights.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF KNOWING MY HIV STATUS?
Knowing the results of your HIV test can alleviate the stress and anxiety of thinking that one may be infected and not knowing the actual HIV status.

![Page 25: 1 St Hiv And Aids Workshop 2008](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022032616/55a490c81a28abaf3e8b47a6/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
If you test negative for HIV, you can take
precautions so that you remain HIV negative.
If you test positive for HIV, you can seek medical
treatment earlier. NDURU

Pregnant women who test positive for HIV can help to
prevent the baby from becoming infected with HIV.
Knowing your HIV status will help one to reduce the risk of
transmitting the virus to others.

A doctor can keep an eye on your health. If you do fall ill, the doctor is going to take your symptoms more seriously if they know that you are HIV positive.
Knowing that you have HIV may affect some of your future decisions and plans, for example starting a family.

Living with HIV, Learning you are HIV+
Reaction to the result is different for everyone.
Over time, you'll find a way of dealing with it that suits you, but it might be quite different to the way other people cope with it.

It's not easyNo one ever suggested any
of this would be easy. If you need time and space to
think your situation through, take it.

Whatever you're going through is natural. How you deal with this news is up to you.
HIV is threatening your existence, so it's alright to be angry. If you are scared, express your fears. Don't be hard on yourself and don't force yourself to be strong if you don't want to be.

Stress is natural and affects to your emotions. It can help one to deal with some situations. However, excessive stress can cause physical symptoms, it can damage ones immune system and make you ill.

Choose things that work for you
HIV can bring anxieties. One way of tackling these are through getting information, by learning about your condition, gaining confidence in it, in yourself and making informed choices for your future.

Alternatively, you might choose to ignore the
diagnosis (but remember it won't go away) and just
carry on with your life. It's your life, you choose.

Ultimately all decisions relating to your life will still
be made by you, so if you are unclear about anything, Eg. different side-effects of drug
treatment, ASK.

Who to tell? Think through about Who to tell,
and how, Telling close friends and family can provide relief and support, but it can also cause problems.
Do people really need to know? Do they need to know immediately?

Many people are still afraid of catching HIV through normal social contact. Background or culture may also play a
part in how difficult it might be for us to tell other people
that we are HIV positive.

Be careful who you tell, don't rush off and tell everyone straight away - you might regret telling them later. Do they really have to know? If so, do they have to know now, or can
you leave it till later? But sharing the news of your positive status with the right people can strengthen personal relationships and help you feel less
isolated.NDURU

"I have also told two people at work. After I had told them I thought Oh God I have put such a huge burden on them, because I asked them to keep this big secret, but they told me that they felt privileged that I trusted them so much that I could tell them. Probably the first thing that someone you tell will think
about is how you got infected.
If they're kind enough not to actually ask, be careful that
they aren't making assumptions about you.

Whether you tell depends on lots of things including whether you're still
involved with them now, what they know about HIV,
whether they're HIV positive or not (and how do you find out?), and whether they need to know, perhaps because you had unsafe sex with them before you knew your status. How will either of you deal with worrying about who gave whom

Your culture may make it impossible to discuss HIV with your family and friends. There are many organisations and help-lines who may be able to put you in touch
with other people in a similar situation to you who might be able
to offer support or listen to your concerns.

I woke up one day and I realized that there were many things about mylife I was not satisfied with, there were challenges that were threatening my soul. And I said to myself, "Why should anyone envy me and want to be in my shoes." why? They don't know how far I've come, they don't know what lies ahead of me, and neither do they know how dissatisfied I get withmyself from time to time.People don't know the troubles that I've had or the price I had topay to get to where I am. All they want to know is that they wishthey were like me. Why should you wish you were in anybody's shoeswhen you hardly know how they fit? When you've worn your shoes for a while, they take the shape of yourfeet and align to the way you walk. If you were to wear my shoes, youwill not be comfortable in them. So I stopped wishing that I am insomeone else shoes because it might not fit; rather I thank God for myshoes, because they fit! I have learnt to try to be the best in what I do, and I know no-one can replace me in this world just like you. I am an original shoe, my God is not in the cloning business producing fong kongs. He makes originals, real makoyas like you and me. Embrace the diversity and know that there are different types of shoes.
