“Take a look at the big board! They’re gettin’ ready to clobber us!”

From Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (Columbia, 1964)

… so we’d better make sure that things displayed in big boards (used by decision makers) give the best possible information.

The road ahead and progress so far

• Show speed is measured, not calculated. (see attached plots)

• Prepare datasets to complete OTREC I proposal (70% complete, need to sit down and import everything into MATLAB so it can be easily used)

• “Spatial” regression mechanisms – used Netlab and wrote wrappers to automate the tests (Linear, GMM, ANN.)

So, calculating or measuring speed?

• At Dave’s suggestion, I went back to raw data from several sensors (at the lane level) and produced scatter plots looking for a functional relationship.

• I tried to pick sensors from diverse areas and different traffic conditions.

• I replaced NULL values with the number “-10”.

Measured!

• It looks like speed is indeed measured. Plus, I’ve seen several instances of volume and occupancy = 0 with speed measurements.

Brown bag readings

• We mentioned picking a paper to briefly skim on a weekly basis, primarily to get acquainted with related work.

• Idea: We can meet and recap for half an hour or so (11:30 seems to work) and then have lunch with paper in hand.

• We found several relevant sources, and I volunteer to bring a paper for next week:

Minor details

• I’ll create a small webpage on SPACKLE for the Datalab website.

• We can also have a wiki and a mailing list (useful since it archives automatically.)
