Looking back

God gave victory to the nation even with this small standing army --

Over a massive army of Philistines.

Saul has gone from trusting in a BIG GOD with a small army,

To trusting in a big army and leaving God out.

Disobedience, rebellion,and pride describe

Saul now.

5 And Saul came to a city of Amalek, and laid wait in the valley. 6 And Saul said unto the Kenites, Go, depart, get you down from among the Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them: for ye shewed kindness to all the children of Israel, when they came up out of Egypt. So the Kenites departed from among the Amalekites.

Vengeance for His children is the Lord's prerogative, and He never forgets.

God never forgets a kindness done unto His children either.

7- 8 And Saul smote the Amalekites from Havilah until thou comest to Shur, that is over against Egypt. And he took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive, and utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword.

Is that what God said to do?

"utterly destroy all."

9 But Saul and the people spared Agag, and the best of the sheep, and of the oxen, and of the fatlings, and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not utterly destroy them: but everything that was vile and refuse, that they destroyed utterly.

Saul and the Israelites allowed human logic to outweigh God's Word.

This can't turn out well.

casting down imaginations (logismos -- reasoning), and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

Human reasoning is the devil's stronghold;

It exalts itself against God.

Christians must never be led by our carnal minds or our carnal emotions.

We are the children of the Most High God;

We must submit ourselves unto Godand obey His Word and His Spirit,.

When Saul saw the fatness of the Amalekite sheep and cattle and when he considered the enhancement of his own glory and prestige in bringing back Agag, king of Amalek, as prisoner, he could not resist returning them as public exhibits of his leadership. That this was Saul’s intent is clear (v12), which speaks of Saul’s erecting a monument to his own honor at Carmel …

Draw a big crowd;

Build a big church.
