    technical feasibility of slurry t reatm en t is reviewed in a positive fashion,from discouraging beginnings ("ha lf of the amine was absorbed on t hegangue") to the more promising work at CANMET and elsewhere.

    Before discussing the industrial processes, the authors set the scene withchapters on Process Development, Processing Equip men t and Plant Design.Process Develo pment is described rather briefly, since some of the materialoverlaps with th at of Part I; the casual reader might theref ore be misled bythe comments on changes in pH value during equilibration and by the short-ness of the section on kinetics. The autho rs' warnings on solvent pretreat-men t and their evaluation of pilot plant operations are very valuable inclu-sions.Processing Equipment is described through diagrams and through text,with a good selection o f references to supply greater detail. Although th eauthor s give a useful comparison o f the contactors available, the compar isonis hindered by the lack of standardised chemical systems and equipm entsizes in the data. Plant Design includes some particularly pertin ent facts onmaterials of construction for solvent extraction plants, which should beread by all research workers as well as by planners. It is probably sensibletha t the section devoted to plant sa fety is restricted, in view of the increas-ing com ple xity and variety of National s afety legislation.

    The final chapters of the Volume are devoted to Effluent Treat ment andEconomic Considerations. The chapter on Effluent Treat ment is concernedwith the uses of solvent extraction rather than with trea tmen t of solventextraction raffinates, and shows the economic and environmental drivingforces towards both solvent extraction and resin ion-exchange processing.Interesting comme nts are included on water recycling and on the long termenvir onmen tal implications of neutralizing metal-bearing liquors with lime.The chapter on Economics brings together many useful data and generallyavoids comparisons invalidated by the high level of inflat ion over the pastdecade, but unf ortu nat ely the dating of some of the cost estimates is unclear.The b ook closes with a convenient table of conversion factors and a sub-stantial (23-page) index.It would be unusual to find a book without misprints, and happily thereare only a small number in this volume. There should be no confusion,provided that the reader can tie text to Figure 8 in Chapter 1, can discountCo 6 and can reverse th e odd misleading flow sheet arrow.

    Overall, the aut hors have produced a valuable addi tion to the solvent ex-tract ion li terature wh ich will be widely apprec iated by specialists in thefield and to which students o f Mineral Processing should refer. Unf ortuna te-ly the price of the volume may well deter the private buyer.
