XILINX ISE --Installing steps for USC Students (EE109/EE354L/EE560)

2 Basic installation info:

2.1 Browse through the following pages: http://www.xilinx.com/ Open the page http://www.xilinx.com/products/design-tools/ise-design-suite/index.htm

2.2 ISE stands for Integrated Software Environment. ISE WebPACK is the free version of the ISE. EE109 students will install the free ISE 14.7 WebPACK. EE354L and EE560 students will install the fully licensed ISE 14.7 Logic Edition and System Edition. These two editions include the chipscope used in these courses. We have limited licenses for the fully licensed version, so I request that we follow this division between EE354L/560 and other courses. 2.3 Make sure that you have about 30 GB space on your C:\ drive because the installation of this and other tools (including Chipscope and Modelsim) is huge. See page 19/74 of http://www.xilinx.com/support/documentation/sw_manuals/xilinx14_7/irn.pdf

2.4 Platform support: ISE does not support Mac OS. If you are a Mac user, do not struggle to install “Parallels” and run Windows OS so as to install and use this software. You can use VDI (a.k.a. Viterbi MyDeskTop).Your instructor/TA will provide all the details about how to use VDI. VDI can be used by all users (PC/Mac users). We can also access Xilinx ISE tools on the university computers in OHE336 and SAL125.Among the Windows OS, ISE 14.x supports Windows XP and Windows 7, Windows 10. 2.5 Download the software: This document was originally written in August 2014 and is updated on 11/25/2017. When you attempt to download the Xilinx installation files in the next step, you will be taken to the following dialogue box asking you to create an account on Xilinx. Go ahead, create an account and sign in.

2.6 If Xilinx suggests that you install a download manager tool, agree and do so. This tool is really good. If you lose internet connection during the long download, you do not have to start all over. It remembers and continues from where it left off.

2.7 Download the four files from the Xilinx website: http://www.xilinx.com/support/download/index.html/content/xilinx/en/downloadNav/design-tools.html

2.8 Depending on your internet connection speed, downloading this huge (~8 GB) of installation files could take 1 hour to 2 hours. It is best to download the files when you are on campus as the download speed on campus is usually much higher than the home internet. If you have difficulty with your internet, request one of your friends to download it for you and give it to you on a DVD or a USB memory stick.

2.9 After you finish downloading, please un-tar (using any unzip utility, say, 7-zip from http://www.7-zip.org/ for example) the Split Installer Base Image tar file (Xilinx_ISE_DS_14.7_1015_1-1.tar) to form the directory Xilinx_ISE_DS_14.7_P.49d.3.0-1.

2.10 Login to your computer as “Administrator” to install the tools.

2.11 If you have previous version of ISE installed, though it is not necessary, it may be best to uninstall the previous versions. You can save space also. For example, I had ISE 12.4 (in Aug 2014). Go to Start => All Programs => Xilinx ISE Design Suite 12.4 => Accessories => UninstallThis can take 40 minutes!

2.12 This is optional. From the Start menu, you can go to Control Panel\System and Security\SystemMy Windows 10 Professional is a 64-bit Operating System.

2.13 Open the directory Xilinx_ISE_DS_14.7_1015_1-1 . Double-click on in the directory Xilinx_ISE_DS_14.7_P.49d.3.0-1.

2.14 Welcome screen: I disabled anti-virus software as advised and re-enabled it at the end of the installation.

2.15 Browse and show where you have the three files that you have downloaded.

2.16 Accept the two-part license agreement.

2.19 Accept the default destination directory and Program Folder.

2.20 Installation Options Summary screen: Press

2.21 If your computer does not have Microsoft Visual C++, around 85% of the installation, you may be prompted with the following:

2.22 Around 91% of the installation, the cable driver related dialogue boxes appear. Accept them.

2.23 When "Install Completed" screen appears, click "Finish".You see two icons on your desktop. We mainly use the ISE Design Suite 14.7.

2.24 Sometimes the license screen appears. If it does not appear by itself, you can invoke it by going to windows

Start => EE109 students will request for the free ISE WebPACK License through the internet (using the Acquire a License tab). EE354L/EE560 students will select “Locate Existing Licenses" but they need to do a couple of things before they press Next button so that it finds the USC floating licenses.

2.25 EE109:

2.25.1 EE109: Sign in to your account (in an internet browser) under select

2.25.2 EE109: In the next 3-part "Generate Node License" screen, press Next.

2.25.7 EE109: You will receive an email with the license file attached and Quick-Start License Installation Instructions.

2.25.10EE109: Notice the appearance of the WebPACK in the list of licenses for software (S/W).

2.25.11EE109: Press the button in the above screen to complete this part.Now installation and license acquiring tasks are complete.

2.26 Now let us narrate what the EE354L/EE560 students should do for licenses.They basically need to point the tool to the University floating license server.

2.26.1 On 11/26/2017, when I installed ISE 14.7 on my laptop running 64-bit windows 10 Professional, the license manager was not opening first. I followed the recommendation in the Xilinx article https://www.xilinx.com/support/answers/62380.html (extract reproduced on the side) which solved the problem.

2.26.2 Make sure you are running vpn. If you have never used vpn at USC, then you need to go to sslvpn.usc.edu. More details of VPN can be obtained at https://itservices.usc.edu/vpn/ . Details were provided at https://itservices.usc.edu/vpn/anyconnect/

Wait until the vpn lock symbol shows up in the system tray.

2.26.3 Type (better to copy and paste) [email protected] in the LM_LICENSE_FILE window

and hit the Set button as illustrated below. It takes a minute to contact the license server and gather all licenses.

Then sort the table based on "S/W or I/P Core" and then scroll to S/W area to see that you have acquired floating licenses for ISE, PlanAhead, Chipscope, etc. as displayed below. Now your license installation is complete and you may close the license manager.

2.27 Invoke the ISE Project Navigator by clicking on the desktop short-cut If it says program not responding, do not close it. Select the choice to wait until the program responds. Sometimes it take a while to check licenses through the Internet.

3 Software Update

3.1 Now let us check for updates. In the ISE Project Navigator window, go to Help => Check for Updates.

You will see a message that there are no updates. On this page, it says "As of October 2013, ISE has moved into the sustaining phase of its product life cycle, and there are no more planned ISE releases."

3.2 In the ISE Project Navigator window, go to Help => Software Manuals. This takes you to the documents page. Get acquainted with the help utility. Click on one of the manuals. Your TA can show you. 3.3 In the ISE Project Navigator window, go to Help => Help Topics

4 Test your installation

4.1 Open a schematic example if you are a EE109L student or a schematic/Verilog example if you are a EE354L student.Say, the Bidirectional 4-bit Johnson Counter with Stop Control.If you are a EE560 student, you may want to open a VHDL example design, say the Stopwatch Design.

4.2

4.3 EE109/EE354L students: Double-click on the schematic file to view the schematic. EE560 students: Double-click on the VHDL file of their project to view the same.

4.4 Pre-synthesis (behavioral) simulation and post synthesis (gate-level) simulation can be done using the Xilinx simulator ISim. Select to perform behavioral simulation using the given testbench as shown on the side.Allow access to the tool to communicate.

4.6 Now let us download .bit file to our FPGA board.For EE109 and EE354L students using Nexys-2 and Nexys-3 boards, your TA will demonstrate using Adept to download the .bit file.

For the EE560 students using the Nexys-4 board, Adept doesn’t work with the Artix-7 FPGA on Nexys-4. They need to use the iMPACT in the ISE tool set.

5 Modelsim

5.1 At USC, until 2013, we were using ModelSim from Mentor Graphics for post-synthesis simulation also. However it requires compiling xilinx library using compxlib tool. This step of using compxlib tool was becoming a tedious problematic operation and in the recent years ISim simulator tool from Xilinx was able to do a good job of post-synthesis simulation with component delays.

6 Chipscope:

6.1 EE354L/EE560 students: Your current installation includes the Chipscope Pro tool. You will be provided separate instructions for using the Chipscope tool.
