Blurb from Amanda
Happy August everyone! It makes me sad to say that this
will be my last month here, only for a year though!
My replacements name is also Amanda, and she is fantas-
tic. Please remember this is new to her so be kind and reassure
her! Make sure to introduce yourselves as well.
The first two weeks of August we will have our main activi-
ties but I will spend more time training Amanda in the office
department. But no worries, we will get back on track and get
into the fun and games in the middle of the month.
Edson has a fun new "Game" going on called "Edson
Rocks" you paint funky rocks and hide them all over town. Its
become quite the activity. The Boys and Girls Club would love
to come and paint rocks with us to hide around town to partici-
pate. We have it marked on our calendar twice for the month
of August. Lets get involved!
I know we agreed not to have a Matamao Meeting till Sep-
tember but I am going to show Amanda the ropes, we will have
a quick brief one on the 12th to hand everything over to her.
Don’t forget to let Nicole know which two family members
will attend our Resident Family Potluck and what dish they are
bringing to the dinner.
Take care,
Amanda Wills

The Lion
July 23 - August 22
Leos tend to have almost a royal air about them. Their planetary ruler is the Sun, and so they are talented at bringing warmth, life and light into the relation-ships that are important to them. Many Leos will have a large group of friends that adore them. They have a kind of natural charisma which often makes other signs gravitate towards them. Like their planetary rul-er, Leos love to be at the center of attention and they deeply appreciate compliments and even flattery. Their happy and outgoing attitude towards life makes them pleasurable to be around.

The Virgin
August 23 - September 22
Those born under the Virgo zodiac sign have capable, organized and analytical minds, which often makes them a pleasure to chat with. Even when they have rather fantastic stories, the charming way they tell them can make those stories convincing. Virgos are curious people, and they have a natural gift for re-search - whether it comes to assignments, or even people. They also often have great memory and a tal-ent for intuition. They make for excellent team mem-bers in both work and social situations. They love to collaborate, although their sometimes critical nature can annoy others when those criticisms are not under-stood.

September 2nd, 2019 will mark the 100th anniversary of Wilfrid ‘Wop’ May’s
historic landing near First Avenue in Edson - the first known use of an aircraft
for police pursuit in Canada. That landing, and subsequent chase through Yel-
lowhead County to the Coal Branch, made headlines throughout the province
for weeks.
The story reads like a movie script, beginning with the
tragic murder of an Edmonton Police Service officer, and
continuing with chases, escapes, manhunts, attempted
murder and the eventual capture of an extremely bad
man.
In the early morning hours of Saturday, August 30, 1919, Constable William
Leslie Nixon of the Edmonton City Police - who was back in Canada after serv-
ing with distinction in the First World War - was walking his beat close to city
centre when he approached a man loitering in the area. Without warning, the
man pulled a handgun from his jacket, fired at the officer and fled.
Seriously wounded, Nixon was found by fellow officers and rushed to the hos-
pital, where he was able to describe the assailant before he died.
At the age of 29, he was the second Edmonton Police officer to
die in the line of duty
8
The ensuing manhunt was of epic proportions, with every
available officer (and several of military men who had
served overseas with Nixon) scouring the city searching for
the likable police officer’s killer.
It was soon discovered the alleged murderer, John Larson, had purchased a railway ticket
to flee Edmonton and was headed to the Coal Branch - that
is when Police Chief George Hill made the historic decision to
bring in pilot Wop May to help chase the man down.
Wilfrid Reid ‘Wop’ May was a natural choice for the police
chief, as he was a skilled decorated WWI pilot whose run-
in with the notorious Baron Manfred von Richtofen (The
Red Baron), in what was to be the Baron’s last dogfight,
made him a well-known Canadian hero.
Wop’s skill and daring and ‘low-flying daredevil antics,’ was
a featured attraction in Edmonton and the surrounding ar-
ea. Wop immediately agreed to fly Detective James Camp-
bell as close to the Coal Branch as possible to help catch
the fugitive.
Finding a place to land in the heavily forested,
hilly area was extremely difficult and Wop lat-
er stated that the trip was the most hazard-
ous and dangerous he had
taken to date. Startling the entire town, the brave
duo landed on First Avenue in Edson on Septem-
ber 2, 1919.

Linda Osipow was kind enough to bring in some of her farm favorite animals to the Lodge in July. It was such a nice way to spend one of our few nice days
last month.
I hope you guys all enjoyed
the animal snuggles!
