NEW ZEALAND NEWS

e e ra ~n en earsCongratulations, ~1 couple c~f~ months ado the Early I-Iolden Club of Auckland reached Ten years ofexistence. 1 decided to write this article mainly because my wife Heather and myself are the onlyoriginal remaining members of the club from when it all began back in 1983.

Some of you will remember names like Mark Grey (F.1 Sedan) of Papatoetoe who was the firstpresident and Brett Grinder (EK auto Sedan) of Pakuranga, vice president later to become president, and Heather, who was the secretary. Our committee first consisted of seven other members, including myself (EH Special Sedan), Howard Amos (restored FJ Sedan) and of course, Dave Ring(FC Sedan).

Our rules were fairly basic, Hoidens only accepted between models FX 1948 to HR 1968. Straightbodied and clean interior, stock standard. Mag wheels were an exception. It had to be a Holden sixmotor, Good behaviour, no gangs, and yes, no boy racers.

As you can see, today our rules are fairly similar, the only difference is the expansion of modelrange accepted. More on that in a minute.

Our first official club run was to Eastern Beach in Howick, which we all first gathered in the carpark of McDonalds in Papatoetoe. There were only five cars, one FJ, one FC, one EK and twoEH's. We took frontal photos, developed them and chose the best to advertise in the AutoT~rader forall Early Holden owners to get together, Auckland Domain, Sunday 4th December 1983, 11 am.What a great response that produced. We later signed up members like Arthur Church (EHWagon), John Muller (EH Premier) and John Harrison (EH Sedan), all from the North Shore.

We started having alternative Committee meetings once a month at members houses all over

Auckland and then Heather produced the Club magazine issue No 1. It was only a single double

sided pale back then and hand written -but it got the message across. Often it was easier tocommunicate over the phone because of the smaller numbers involved. I can remember having 20

local and 2 out of town members in l 984, growing to about 40 a year or so later.

Membership was $5 to start with, which have you full benefit of the club. Later on we accepted

associate members, mostly whom were out of town. I became president from 1985 to 1990 whichmajor change in those years was ex~andin~ the model range from current ~ ~R series to the moremodern WI3 series. At first, this did not create too much interest (1 was still at school - ed), but thensuddenl -̀. the rehirth of the 1I series I-lc~lden reunited, and the il~~v of bid Premier's, Monaro's,~in~sw~~od's and I3elmont's started. (And long may it continue - ed).

Peter Van {lumen look over the magazine in 1985 and redirected the Club's postal address through

Kempton Park ~s, ~n my view an excellent venue forcar related events, providing both indoor and al fres~~oaccomodat~on t'or autojumblers and mostly good hard standing for ''cars, important ~f you prefer not to get bogged in inclementweather - remember Popham?! Being centrally located within theHome ~,aunt~es ~t i~ ideal fui~ drawing the crowds anti vehicles.

Shortly after our arrival on that cold, dull morn ournewest member appeared with his girlfriend in their .1981Commodore which apparently he had purchased at a car auction -at Kempton Park. Having eventually sorted out our ratheruncertain parking arrangements snot at all as marked on themap!) we settled in alongside the Datsun 2402 Club and unpackedthe regalia, signs, models etc. for display. I decided in theinterests of authenticity to fit a genuine Aussie number plateto the front of the HR. Expecting Chas and Daphne Blake to turnup we did our best to leave them a spice rahich became very tightas we were shuffled around; however when they found us an hourlater they managed to slot in only by squeezing their elbowsagainst their ribs! Yau could not have slid a head gasketbetween ouselves and the next club in the end and Ken had t~park the Calais across the back of the display.

There was quite a lot of interest ~n our stand fromex-pat Hussies and bemused locals; the former reliving memoriesin the outback and the latter wondering from what planet ourvehicles had fallen. They tended to scatter when the brass bandpiped up just behind us under the stands and continued to blastits way through "American Patrol" ;"Blaze Away" and other brassband standards. They must be standards because a different bandreplaced the original incumbents in the afternoon, pursuing thesame repertoire, only louder.

As expected of such an event the selection of cars wasexcellent - a drophead Citroen Traction, Datsun Fairlady, prototype 4 wheel drive Zephyr Police car, KSU Spyders and abrace of early 'fifties Numbers were spotted as well as avintage FIAT and a 5,000 mile from new Prefect 100E. Theauto~umble was vast and varied ranging from a euphonium to Ubolts, go-faster goodies to immobilisers. I finally secured a~,arrzct gales br~~chur~ f or my other c unn~ent ionable ) gar afteryears of fruitless searching, and with the redoubtable Chas atmy side purchased a set of clutch pipe unions and a flexiblehose for the Holden - all since very successfully fitted. Distinguished by an 'egg -crate' stylegrille, the VC Commodore was arefinement of the 197f~ VB model.

Whccls magarinc hcralcleci thelaunch with the statement: 'The I1CWVC Commodore isn't perfect ... butthat doesn't stop us declaring that it iseasily the best Australian car ever.'

As well as refining the Commodoreconcept, the VC offered buyers afour -cylinder engine in addition to the'six' or V8.

The four -cylinder model, launchedfour months after the rest of the range, way ~c~w~red by a l.9-titre unit haledon the StarCrc engine fitted to theHolden Sunbird. The six -cylinder andeight -cylinder engines fitted to the VCwere revised 'XTS' versions, whichwere up to 25 per cent more powerf~iland 15 per cent more economical than

before. This was achieved with aredesigned cylinder head, camshaft, carburettor, inlet manifold and e~austmanifold ~nc~ electronic ignition.

Another ~~lus was an upgrade of thesuspension system which resulted infurther improved ride and handlingcharacteristics. The V~ range alsoreintroduced 'shadow tone' (two -colour} exterior paintwork, a featurenot seen on a new Holden for 20years. Another new Commodore optionwas cruise control.

The VC kept Commodore in itsplace as Australia's top -selling car.Soon after its launch, production of theHolden HZ range, which hadcontinued alongside the Commodore, was discontinued. A new range of 'WB'light commercials and Statesman sedanswas announced at the same time.
