MICE PM report – status of Phase II
• Target update• Spectrometer solenoid• FC & coupling coils• Schedule considerations• Project accommodation & management
• Don’t have time for a detailed status report, have a look at: http://mice.iit.edu/mico/
UKNF/MICE PSAG, 11th January, 2010
Target update• Running with online target finished for this year at end of
user run, no dust or debris observed at viewport – running completely trouble-free
• Everything for T2r and T3 is done except plastic bearing liners:• Torlon material was machined last week – not preferred
material, as it contains PTFE, but will give valuable data/experience for offline running in R78
• Vespel delivery (preferred material) has been sad tale – repeated missed deliveries, but alternative billet has been found and ordered
• Still a good chance we can make mid-lateJan for T2r offline build-up in R78
• Stator research/re-work is making reasonable progress• Comprehensive target controls rack is complete at Sheffield

Spectrometer solenoid• Review at LBNL generally went OK:
• Recommended that given the circumstances, adding the fourth CCR to magnet #2 was the right approach
• Thermal FEA study of magnet must be progressed urgently• Operating margin must be evaluated accurately at
cooldown• The modifications to magnet #1 should proceed as
planned• Present status:
• Magnet #2 (the first one we get) is in final stages of leak-checking this week
• Cooldown begins 18th January• Powering tests occupy, say 25th January to 20th February*• Ship to FNAL end February** AN’s interpretation only!

Spectrometer solenoid
• What happens at the cooldown/powering:• MICE has agreed some acceptance criteria via its
Technical Board:• Must sustain design current for min 24 hours• LHe top-ups > six weeks apart (this is ‘not quite’
agreed yet)• Declaration of conformity is completed• An as-built installation drawing and specification is
completed• We hope this decision point arrives around mid-
February, if all is met and field mapping goes OK, then we get magnet #2 around mid-May.
• If not, we may have to face a ground-up rebuild (one year) and magnet #1 will overtake

*This is where the work is
FC, LH2, CC
FC:– Design work on the FC making good progress at Tesla– Some nagging doubt that the integration between the LH2
absorber and the FC is not properly understood– Is being dealt with by Technical Board – would prefer to
bring the engineering responsibility to STFC– FC delivery still promised for July/August, 2010– Request at CM to place solid absorber(s) in FC at Step IV– Some minor design/manufacture work to accommodate,
will be done by OxfordLH2:
– Going well at AS scientific– Parts have arrived to complete the gas panel– Very clear that we have to resume work on the vent
system during 2010 to be on time
6
FC, LH2, CC
Good progress also with the CC:– Problems in China are being solved:– Engineering drawings of magnet will be done on time– Project management structure at HIT is being re-built– Aim is to let magnet contract to Qihuan by time of
Riverside Collaboration Meeting (late March, 2010)– One set of RF cavities (four + one) have been
delivered to LBNL – are being polished just now– Real delivery dates of CC magnet will become clear as
order is placed
7
Schedule considerations
No real changes from last month, ie:– Steps II &III are combined and will aim to be ready for
February, 2011– Significance of Step III.1 is being evaluated by MICE– Have realised though that we need to be working on the
H2 vent system during 2010 to be on time for Step IV– Integration steps are now well understood and detailed– We’re critically dependent on the big subsystems , just
three dates.....– Next step is to make the plan for the above 2010/2011
period, most of it exists, but some knocking together needed
– All the UK preparations for Steps II &III are in place, or will be done by Feb/March (CCR water system and floor drilling, CCR compressor racking)
8
Project Accommodation
• Looking ahead to Steps V & VI, we will need more space at RAL for:
• Pre-integration, especially RFCC modules• Storage of tooling, materials and finished modules.
– Ideally need ~ 350 sqm with 15 tonne crane access– Have expressed interest in R79– But R40 is excluded– What are the plans for R12 when workshop moves to
R79? – R9 might also be available, would be ideal given
proximity to UKNF equipment in R8– Have discovered Blueprint accommodation committee,
Justin Greenhalgh is rep for EID – have booked meeting.
9
Project Management• Practical steps have been taken to appoint Project Planner:
• Contact made with Mark Smith company (Andrew Bowyer), waiting for suitable meeting date – had the meeting – very positive
• Had meeting/MICE visit with UKAEA (Roy Manning), but need to follow up (have followed up)
• Need to see a few more – no we didn’t• No commitments made – have stated that we’re waiting for
financial approval• Two sensible offers now received from both firms
• Hope is to parcel up the project monitoring and control function as one discrete task, full time at first, but hopefully becoming part-time
• It’s a costed line in the C&S review• So far efforts to find a person within STFC or MICE have not
worked
10
Living within our means (from last PSAG)• FY 09/10 must finish on budget• Progress on the cuts:
– Stop LH2 October (done – end November)– Stop RF power in October (ditto)– Stop PPS in November (done)– Reduce TD effort bookings to skeleton level for three
months (done)– Reduce Merit-Merrell/S&T costs by 50% - (done)– Hope we can resume normal service early 2010 – still
hoping, but see below!– Target development and Step II infrastructure will be
preserved• Valuable design and technical staff have now moved to
other projects – this is a very uncomfortable situation
11
Concerns & risks
• Just one this time• 2 MVA transformer upgrade is now more serious, but thanks
to Ken’s efforts there might be some good news• Additional CCR compressors for spectrometer solenoid might
mean Step III is at risk rather than Step IV – clearer after review
• DL group is currently doing the exercise – in progress
