1 MICE PM Report Phase One installations to date Some problems with target & Decay Solenoid Phase One remaining items, schedule & milestones Progress with Phase Two Staffing & visitors Dont have time for a detailed status report, have a look at:MICE CMPB, 3rd September, 2008 2 Phase One Installations to date South shield wall: All plates except a few are fitted, aim to finish next few days West end staircase fitted Aluminium mezzanine & fireproofing to be installed (is already made), floor shield plates to fit All plates now delivered Contract troubles fixed amicably 3 Installations to date DSA PPS is installed and working Has been demonstrated to Mark Arnold of ISIS All PPS electrical inputs to ISIS system verified OK Full integration with ISIS takes place when MICE reaches BS SIL2 rating in progress, all parts are compliant Thats when we accept as fully implemented Currently we have extended permission to run with manually locked DSA Grateful thanks to John Alexander, Craig Macwaters and many others Main Hall PPS planning is in progress: Meeting in late September with ISIS at JAs request to confirm plans 4 Installations to date Mound excavation: The hard work is done! Digging and shoring complete, need to fit vacuum ducts then backfill Approval from ISIS given to continue after next run starts, subject to radiation survey (this is a crucial step) 5 Installations to date Progress with the beamline: TOF0 now installed in DSA and cabled up but not tested Noise pick-up problem with Beam profile monitors will be addressed in October shutdown (ISIS needs to be off) Fixed beamstopper is made Full sliding beamstopper at end of DSA will be late due to design & manufacturing difficulties, but: We do have an approved by ISIS remotely operated system in place, so can run if necessary TOF1 will come to RAL on mid-September by RAL transport No changes with KL or cKOV Every endeavour to finish heavy civil work by mid-end November this dictates when tracker/readout can be integrated in Hall, effectively the start of step two Diffuser is almost done at Oxford, but needs lower mass version of can end plate comes to RAL 20 th October 6 Problems with Target & Decay Solenoid Decay Solenoid: Oil leak on compressor fixed quickly Compressor unit still over sensitive to ambient conditions Hot week in July caught us out it failed Fixed by temporary air conditioning Long term fix is: Install permanent A/C in the plan and paid for Or buy water cooled compressor (60 KCHF?) But the solenoid finally got cold Power test revealed a normal coil Some minor re-wiring needed before we could be sure Getting clearer, latest news its probably the coil nearest the end cap joint between current leads and superconductor quite good news, but still dont know for sure What do we do..? Best case is to remove end cap from in-situ solenoid 7 Problems with Decay Solenoid and Target Remove end cover Also need to remove BPM Withdraw D2 to park position Mike Courthold is working on plan Do it in short October shutdown (20 th -30 th ) Need to construct temporary hoist In DSA under access platform 8 Problems with Decay Solenoid & Target But worst case is to withdraw cold mass Need to do this at Christmas shutdown Tooling needs to be recovered from PSI And some parts designed & made Awaiting detailed workplan Withdraw D2 Re-install rails Remove part of Shield wall 9 Problems with Decay Solenoid and Target Target: Target #1 arrived in July, ran and failed after a short time This was planned to go in ISIS! The shaft seized badly in the bearings DLC coating completely chewed up So we took it to bits First suspicion mechanical misalignment of bearings Metrology proved OK at 20 micron level Could the magnetic axis be tilted causing side load on shaft Tom Bradshaw is checking not easy though Current target in ISIS still OK, but we dont now have a demonstrator We should not be pressured to hurry with the second target till we understand the failure 10 Problems with Decay solenoid and target What to do? ISIS has approved 60K cycles with existing online target We do not have the scope in UK for a bottom-up target re-design We should accept that there might always be some funny transverse forces well never understand, but we should make mechanical provision for them: Redesign/make bearings Re-tolerance the shaft/bearings Address QA for DLC coatings with supplier New mechanical test programme agreed with ISIS Meeting arranged with Sheffield group this week And brainstorming session at October CM, including external participation 11 Problems with Decay Solenoid and Target Must remove this sharp edge DLC removed from lower bearing Ditto upper bearing Effects of seizure On target bearings 12 Phase One remaining items North Shield Wall: Order placed with Regal Engineering in July, installation with all plates, etc complete by 24 th November. Fabrication of supports nearly done, start installation 8 th Sept. False floor Order placed, again with Regal, completion by mid- November. Since last meeting need arisen for concrete reaction block for quench forces on floor included with false floor order, all design work done DSA roof and walkways Solenoid platform installed, roof panels installed, railings and gate in fabrication, aim to install around DSA while ISIS running, subject to radiation survey. 13 Phase One remaining items Fencing on R5.2 roof Roof-extract fan Somehow escaped from previous estimates Estimate 15K Firm quote of 8K received, including approved access walkway across Upgrade compressed air supply: All volume and filtration requirements now received from each subsystem, currently waiting to find if ISIS supply can cope Estimate 12K mound, still exploring Well-Found Lab route for payment, but..last minute change of height to 1.8m request from ISIS, so need to go round again Estimate 10K Main Hall door upgrade ISIS pays apparently, must do before December, as Hall- PPS critical RF refurbishment Restoration/Installation costs - 30K, firm quote 14 Phase One Remaining items LH2 Installation: September installation for prototype system will certainly slip to November/December 2008 this is now confirmed Two more safety reviews required: Hazop 2 review, by Serco, prototype control system needs to be finalised first Final safety review (RAL-ISIS-MICE) Both being organised by Jane Vickers & Mike Courthold for October A concern: the same very overloaded group is responsible for: Decay solenoid Focus coils LH2 implementation They cannot work in parallel or work pro-actively the cuts we made will make this worse, not better. The Decay solenoid problems should be a warning! 15 Phase One remaining items Rolling platforms 1 & 7 delayed by yet more problems with subcontractors Contractors visited delivery end September this is believable Fundamental part of step two, but off critical path (just) due to spectrometer solenoid difficulties see later Design work in progress for cheaper rolling platform 2-6 substitutes 16 Progress with Phase Two Organisation: Blondel, long, Zisman, Nichols met in early July to discuss the shape of the UK Phase Two project over four years, with all known constraints Action: Nichols to produce both technical and resource- limited project plans Need realistic date targets from each subsystem, aim to do by series of reviews October CM convenient time to start Phase Two deliverables: Spectrometer solenoids (Although part of UK Phase One), problems with spectrometer solenoids Magnet #1 is being cooled by contractor (Wang NMR), but needs independent LN2 supply to cool rad shield Also vent pipework is inadequate cross-section What this means for us: 17 Progress with Phase Two A delay to step two, first magnet was due at RAL end August Both of the problems ultimately require dis-assembly of magnet not trivial Might be sensible to do that on magnet #2 and shift priority to that And/or postpone field mapping till later in project currently planned at FNAL and due to take six weeks Impossible to forecast delivery date yet, but its hard to see the first solenoid arriving in UK before end November Coupling coils Staffing problems at Harbin with subcontractors now back on track, but probably six months delay for the first (MuCool) coil Productive design review at June CM, will follow up in October 18 Progress with Phase Two Focus Coils Preliminary design review at Tesla Engineering in August was a failure little evidence of progress with detail design, thermal and structural calculations Made large action list for them will re-convene on 18 th September MICE formally expressed their dis-satisfaction to Tesla Project Manager Good news is delivery schedule still looks OK and there dont appear to be any gaping open design issues 19 Staffing & Visitors Over the last few months a good number of collaborators have come to MICE Feedback seems to be good The monthly cycle of MOMs (MICE Operations Manager) was a good idea and works well We have streamlined the visitor induction/safety process to avoid repetition (with full approval of RAL H&S) Local transportation is a problem, but we now have a van Tricia, Susan and the ISIS user office have been a huge help Four candidates have been shortlisted for the MICE admin/liaison post, interviews on Thursday
