Dear Parents and Students
We remember in our prayers this week the Year 11 Students and their teachers as they embark upon their two day retreat. May the focus on reflec on, rela onships and renewal be enlightening, empowering and enriching. In the spirit of “freedom”, we pray, with God’s grace, that all on retreat may be open, honest, though ul, trus ng and hopeful – as ever in the ways of Jesus our Lord.
SOCIAL JUSTICE ACTION
I commend to you the efforts of Anna Cooke and Lily Sullivan (Year 12) who will be taking part in the LIVE BELOW THE LINE challenge, raising both awareness of and funds for the eradica on of poverty in our world. The funds raised will provide educa onal opportuni es in the developing world, in par cular in Papua New Guinea.
From 7 – 11 May, both Anna and Lily, along with thousands of others across the globe, pledge to live on less than $2 a day.
If you would like to help them raise funds for the fight against poverty, please visit the Live Below the Line website and in par cular their pages on

SPORTS AT LORETO
As we are about to commence our winter sports program I am delighted to be able to report some significant improvements that Mrs Meg Stevens, Director of Sports, and her department have made to the 2012 program. This year we have increased the number of teams across all sports; and we have also increased the range of sports available in different age groups. I have been really delighted to see larger squads and increased numbers of students par cipa ng in the various sports. As a school with health, fitness and wellbeing as a priority, it is important that we con nue to ensure maximum involvement and opportuni es for the students. I wish to congratulate the Sports and PE department on their efforts and to also thank the Parent Support Group for Sport for their interest, encouragement and ongoing support.
CONGRATULATIONS
To Bridget Sankey on her selec on to represent Metropolitan East at the State Soccer Championships to be held in Cairns later this month. We wish her every success.
To Wade Bilton on her selec on to represent Metropolitan East at the State Hockey Championships also to be held in Cairns later this month. We wish her well.
Yours sincerely Mrs Cheryl Hamilton Principal

_ÉÜxàÉ TVVY aÉÜà{xÜÇ gxÜÜ|àÉÜç extÄ _|yx V{tÄÄxÇzx The Loreto Australia website states “Mary Ward wanted her companions to engage directly with society and to do so with a spirit of “freedom, justice and sincerity”. She encouraged her followers to take risks and forge new paths…” With this is mind, ten passionate and intrepid students will be undertaking the first ever Loreto/ACCF “real life challenge” to the Northern Territory in the first week of the June/July holidays. These ten students are: Stephanie Esprester, Larissa Claridge, Hannah Kassulke, Laura Nichols, Taili Beausang, Gabrielle Kassulke, Lara DeLuca, Samantha Bull, Mary-Kate Dennis and Hannah Dalton. In conjunction with the Australian Cervi-cal Cancer Foundation (ACCF)and World Expeditions, these students will be un-dertaking a three day trek on the Lara Pinta trail followed by an immersion into local indigenous culture and an opportunity for community service at the Santa Teresa Ltyentye Apurte Community near Alice Springs. This trip endeavours to be not only physically challenging but also spiritually enriching. In the process, we will be raising much needed funds for the ACCF, who are committed to helping “close the gap” and improve awareness about cervical cancer in indigenous communities. Over the course of Terms Two and Three, these students will be conducting a number of fundraising activities both within school and the local community, starting with a Mothers’ Day raffle next week. We would really appreciate your support in any way, so please keep an eye out for updates on what we will be involved with. An “Everyday heroes” page which accepts contributions from the community, is currently in the process of being set up and should be up and running by next week. Stay tuned. Diane Hanson
`âá|v axãá Jazz Ensemble and Chorale Workshops All students involved in the Masterclasses and Workshops with John Morrison and Jacki Cooper next week should by now have received a letter from the Music Department via their homeroom basket. Could parents please fill out the Return Slip on this letter and have their daughters hand it in to the Music Department this week (preferably by Wednesday 2 May).
Loreto Music Festival Don’t forget that heats for the Festival begin this week. The first Section is Junior Instrumental Solo with heats running this Thursday 3 May at lunch and after school in Room 701. All students in this Section should make themselves available to attend both heats, unless they have another school commitment that clashes. In this situation, please see Mrs Nielson prior to Thursday to let her know which heat you can attend. Students who simply do not show up for a heat will have points SUBTRACTED from their house total, so communication is vital! Music Support Group Parents of students involved in either ensembles or private tuition are invited to attend our next Music Support Group meeting on Wednesday 9 May at 7:30 in Room 605 (Gonzaga Barry Building). New parents are always welcome! Ben Langford - Director of Music c 9 Y axãá
The P and F meeting is on tonight, 1 May at 7.30pm. Please join us and find out about the latest happenings. We meet in the staffroom, at the front of the school. We look forward to seeing you.
