THE DAILY BULLETIN.

SATURDAY, FEB. 1, 1893.

Some houses owned by Lord Salis-

bury in London havo been declaredin one of tho police couits to bodangerous and insanitary. Theremay bo soino houses in Honoluluowned by lords of the land whichwould hardly stand strict inspectionand judgment.

A burglar in Berlin made extraprofits for a while, until caught intrying tho plan ouco too often, bysupplying reports of his burglariousexploits, to tho daily press. Whenho gets out ho can turn auothorpenny by doing as a cho fa games-ter did in Honolulu go on tho stageand show how tho thing is done.

An item in an exchange roads:"Several of Milwaukee's publicschools have boon discovered to boso polluted with sower gas that thoHealth Commissioner will closethem at onco." This corroborateswhat tho Bulletin has often taught, namely, that a sewerage system, sofrequently and flippantly advocatedfor our sanitary salvation, may, byan ignorant solectiou of method,do tho health of Honolulu moroharm than good.

Electrical inventors have long boontrying to solve tho problem of asatisfactory storage battery motivepower for street railways. Tho ovor-hoa- d

trolley system is, in spito of allassurances to tho contrary, full ofdanger both to operatives and thopublic. According to tho DetroitFree Press a storago battery car ser-vice has boon started in that citywith complete success. Anothermost useful application of the stor-age system is illustrated in tho newsthat over two hundred omnibuses inLondon aro now fitted with electriclights supplied from small storagobatteries.

Paris is reported to have been suf-

fering of late from an epidemic oflow spirits caused by a lingering fogthat enshrouded tho city. Thu cor-

respondent of tho London Telegraphattributes a daily lengthening list ofmurders and suicides in the gay cityto tho fog's depressing iiilliienci).Probably tho Panama Canal bcandalhas beou Just as much of a dopro.v

sant. It nuiy bo Mint tho Parisiansnro so oxecssivoly buoyant in sun-jsliin- o

in tho variety thoy givo to lifoif thoy aro not tho kind that bringrheumatics into play.

Tho Advertiser innkos a groat out-cry about tho alleged plagiarism ofa San Francisco papor, in appro-priating tho central idoa and soinoof tho words of "Tho Demon Troo"story published by tho Advortisorsome months ago. Several Ameri-

can papers copied tho story, givingour local contemporary duo credit.Thoy treated it, however, not as of"tho highly imaginative order," butas a statement of fact, and honcoHawaii has boon libeled as tho pos-

sessor of a troo moro noxious thantho Upas with oven its fablod lothalproporties added. Thoro aro peoplehero who havo a rocolloclion ofreading in a San Francisco papor avery similar story years ago, of atree in Mexico or sontowhoro in thatdirection. When tho truth as towhoro tho plagiarism began isdivulgod by soino Sau Franciscopapor, as it probably will on thohead of tho Advertiser's blatant indictment of tho Examiner, ourneighbor may find that tho boot ison tho other log.

SALVAGE ENCOURAGED.

Judge Morrow, in tho UnitedStates District Court in San Fran-cisco, in a late decision assorted thoprinciple that assistance to a vossolin distress should bo encouraged. A

3oar ago tho steamer Sirius broke hershaft and was picked up off CodrosIsland by tho steamer Tillamook andtowed into San Diego. Before tow-ing tho vessel an agroomeut wasmado that tho Tillamook should re-

ceive .?20,000 for her services. A re-

port of tho caso in a Sau Franciscopapor says that much uneasiness ex-

isted over tho dolay of the Siriusand it was feared sho had beenwrecked. Thoso interested in thoSirius, however, rejected tho claimfor tho $20,000 after tho Sirius wassafe in San Diego. The vessol waslibeled and Judge Morrow upholdtho contract made by tho captain oftho Tillamook. In tho opinion ofthe Court tho sum asked for wasreasonable, and, in conformity withtho admiralty practice, the dooreoprovided for tho distribution of thoamount. The steamer Tillamookhaving assumed tho risk of failureand disaster, hor charterers woreawarded $13,250, tho captain wasgiven $2500 and t ho ollicors and crow$1250, making a total of $20,000 asclaimod on tho contract. JudgeMorrow in giving his decision said:"I think tho conduct and service oftho master of tho stoamor Tillamookentitles him to some spocial con-

sideration. He promptly procuredadditional stores for tho Sirius, andoffered to take an ollicor of that vos-

sol to Ensonada or San Diego forassistance without charge and with-

out dolay. Ho also engaged in thetowage service against tho protest oT

two of tho passengers on his owuvessel. It is tho policy of tho lawto euconrago tho rendering ofprompt and elliciont assistance tovessels in distress, as was done byCaptain Hamm in this caso."

A nestling of the greatAmerican bird of freedon hasfastened its talons on Hawaiineiand the adherents of peace, order and good governmentwait with bated breath to seeif its grip is as strong as thatof the mother bird. TheBritish Octopus lashes thewater in its rage because itdid not fasten a tentacle onParadise before it was too late, and the Kamaaina who readsthis will remind you that theheavens wept copiously at,what they consider, Hawaii'smisfortune. There can bebut one ending to the upheav-

al and everyone withoutregard to age, sex or previouscondition must stand shoulderto shoulder in its support.

The short-sighte-d man will

tell you of three revolutionsin less than a decade, we cantell you of more: First wehave the Aermotor; it turnedwaste land into green pasturesand added inches of arablesoil at every revolution of thewheel. It has brought moremoney to the landlord's coffersthan can be secured by chas-

ing the sugar planters will-o'-th- e

wisp-bount- y. Then youhave the Hendry Breaker:one of the most powerful fieldpieces in modern Agriculturalrevolutions. With it we hada single handed fight againsta half dozen enemies to goodresults on a plantation. Doyou know the result? Rightwas might and today theHendry Breaker is peerless. Not a plow in the market daretake the field against it. Thenwe have another to record. The mechanism of the enginesin some plantations is moreintricate, and the adjustmentfiner than a Waterbury watch. In many instances parts of themachinery have been ruinedthrough the use of poor oils.Ever ready to come to theassistance of the down-trodde- n

engineer the sufferer fromany accident to the machineryof which he is the master wetook up his cause and secur-ed for our trade the Coloradobrands of Cylinder and Engineoils. There was a revolutionthen and there is today. Butwe were successuu at mestart and will be at the finish. As in every other revolutionin which we have been con-necte- d

Right is Might. TheColorado brands of oil areused exclusively on a majorityof the plantations and itsadoption by the managers hasbrought peaceful times to theengineer whose sleep, forages, has been disturbed byvisions of hot journals andfoaming cylinders. With ouroils satisfaction is assured ineither high or low pressureengines and foaming in thecylinders becomes ancienthistory.

I he revolutions we havementioned have benefited theplantation managers in parti-cular and the stock holders intheir respective companies ingeneral. Our hands havebeen dipped in other mercan-tile revolutions which resultedprofitably to every one on theislands but nong more success"fully than the battle with highprices. We knocked thecrown from its leader just aseffectually as if we had hadforty gatling guns at our com-mand. We've shown the peo-ple on these Islands that adollar is worth a hundredcents and that we give twenty-fiv- e

percent more for the dollar than anyone else. You vebeen benefited, so have we.We met the hard times whenthey struck the country andour philanthropic efforts havebeen appreciated. Whatabout those traps that catcheleven rats at one setting. Can you find anything betterthan that?

Testimony of a Yisitor to the

Molokai Leper Settlement,

Homo and Comforts Provided for the

Sick Folk.

Thoso who know tho MolokaiLopor Sottlomont onby from hearsayaro like mo, before I wont there. Now that 1 havo soon mysolf, andnot through others' oyos, I have, 1

think, a right to spoak about it.And I'd say that I am very glad tohavo soon what I have soon; andvory happy, too, to havo passed afow daj'8 in the Sottlomont.

Owing to tho kindness of Mr.Moyor of Kalao, I reached tho topof tho pali of Kalaupapa, on tho dayI had boon lauded at Kaunakakai,TuosdayJanuary 10th, botwoon 9and 10 a. m. And thoro I began thodescent of the pali, so much talkedabout, lod by an old native, come upfrom Kalaupapa, both of us on foot.It took us about half an hour to godown tho pali, whore SuperintendentAmbrose Hutchinson had sent hishorso, to help mo in reaching thoCatholic Mission's premises, distanta fraction of a mile from below thopali. But I had alroai' had thoagrceablo opportunity of contemplating, from tho side of tho pali, tho Sottlomont of Kalaupapa, which

Jooks like a nico littlo town. And itis reaiiy a vory liiioresting piucu.

I spoilt, nearly tho whole weok attho Molokai Lopor Sottlomont, so Ihad time to go all around, from Ka-

laupapa to Kalawao, and vico versa, ovory day.

Tho best of tho public establish-ments thoro is cortainlv tho homokopt by tho Franciscan Sisters, andwhoroin they havo, under thoir con-trol and thoir maternal charge, about 70 inmates, most of them girls. All thoso girls and women, as I havosoon, and inquired myself of thorn, aro very happy, and nono of thornwould like to go out of tho homo.

Tho homes of Molokai (Kalaupapaand Kalawao) aro a real blessing forthoso who havo tho good senso ofentering luoin a material and spiri-tual blessing: a material blessing, for thoy aro so well lodged, fed, clo'thed, and cared for when thoygot sick; a spiritual blessing, too, forthoy loam thoro that thoy havo asoul to caro for, and that thoj' havoto suffer with pationco thoir segre-gation from tho rest of tho commun-ity. Thoro, also, thoy find in thogood Sisters thoso of whom thoyhavo boon deprived, on account oftho disease with which thoy aro af-fected, i. 0., thoy have in thorn kindmothers, charitablo friends, whotreat thorn bettor than thoy wouldbo at homo.

I havo seen several times tho inmates of tho Kalaupapa homo. Ispoko with thorn. I inquired of themsovoral times whether thoy were con-tent, happy, willing to remain there, and all wore for tho atlirmative. Thanks, thou, to the kind gontlemanwho gave tho first sum of money tostart tho home; thanks to tho Ha-waiian Govornmont which did solargely and so liberally concur withthat kind act of bonovolenco. Maytho Kalawao homo be put in a shorttimo on tho same footing for boysand men.

Kalaupapa is really a pretty, com-fortab- lo

place, as comfortablo asmay bo for tho poor pooplo whohavo to pass tho balance of thoirlives, isolated from thoir relativesand friends. A good and pure airmakes tho place healthy, and pre-vents injury from any of thoso badsmells which leprosy causes. People, thoro as well as Kalawao, aro 'provided with what thoy might ncedrand as regards tho body, they canhardly complain. And wo could callthem ovou happy, liut whoa aChristian may como to consider thospiritual sido, thinking tiiat thosepoor pooplo havo souls like otherswho aro not lepers or, otherwise tosay, when men, who look to aftorlife, roflect on- - some other kind ofleprosy, which affects a great manyof thoso poor sulforors, then thoycannot help pitying them, and wish-ing them to bo bettor cared for inthis respect. I moan here those wholive outside of tho homes, free fromthe control of tho charitablo Sisters, and tho good Fathers, living as theyplease and unfortunate!- - as if theyhad no soul to save. And why dothoy live so?

It is bocnuso they have been separ-ated from thoso with whom thoyhad boon united by tho sacred bondsof marriage, and this is a great evil,to which no remedy can be found, but in tho allowing tho married peo-

ple to go to live togother on Molo-kai, leaving their children, if anythey have, in the children's homes,in charge of the Sisters.

And why more? Because thoy arotoo easily allowed to live together, mou and women, young men andyoung girls, as if thoy were married, though thoy aro not. To this otherevil is a remedy in compelling all theunmarried females to lomniu in thefemales' home, until they get dulymarried; and iu not allowing peopleto live all mixed up, but rather giv-

ing a houhi) or rooms to each family, and also iu not lotting tho residentsof the place talco with them any ofthe lepers lauded at Kalaupapa, women, girls and boys, whom theyclaim as if thoy wore their parentsor relatives, though they are not.

And also again in not lolling wo- -

ami mou live together unlessmen

tho lopors sont from Honoluluhavingjjoon too frooly allowed

to go to livo with men with whomthoy had boon acquainted on boardtho ship for tho hm timo, or at thoreceiving station. And if so, whynot soparato fomalos from males ly

at tho rccoiving station, witha good control, as thoy had boforo atKakaako, uudor tho Sistors? Andwhy also Bond thorn, fomalos andmales, altogothor, poll-mol- l, withoutany control, on tho ship?

So, many ovils, if not all, could bocured, would tho justsonsoof moral-ity prevail in this lopors' business, which ought to bo not only philair-thropic- al

but also Christian; notonly in viow of segregating tho in-

fected from tho hoalthy pooplo, butalso to tho offoct-o- f doing thoso

croalurds tho good thatmight bo dono. . Mjgjit thoso sug-gestions of amelioration bo put intooxecution, and wo would not hoar somany painful reports about thoLeper Sottlomont of Molokai.

Be highly praised the good Fran-ciscan Sistors, who livo all day long intho midst of lopors, attending to allthoir needs, with so motherly affec-tion and dovotednossl

Bo praised also tho TCov. Fathorswho aro alwayfighting tho fight oftho Lord, trying to defeat tho mostcruel onomy of men, tho devil of'licentiousness and drunkenness, whohas done, and is still doing so greatan evil, among the unfortunato suf-ferers of Molokai 1

May tho actual Suporintondontsucceed iu doing tho good ho seemswilling to do among tho lopors, seconded as ho is by Mr. 11. W.Moyor, whoso ability and honestyaro so well known! F. C,

"GermanSyrup

A Throatand LungSpecialty,

Those who have notused Boschce's Ger-man Syrup for somosevere and chronictrouble of the Throatmid Lungs can hard

ly appreciate what a truly wonder-ful medicine it is. The delicioussensations of healing, casing, clear-ing, strcugth-gatherin- g and recover-ing are unknown joys. For Ger-man Syrup we do not ask easy cases.Sugar and water may smooth athroat or stopa tickling for a while. This is as far as the ordinary coughmedicine goes. Boschce's GermanSyrup is a discovery, a great Throatand Lung Specialty. Where foryears there have been sensitiveness, pain, coughing, spitting, hemorr-hage, voice failure, weakness, slip-ping down hill, where doctors andmedicine and advice have been swal-lowed and followed to the gulf ofdespair, where there is the sickeningconviction that all is over and theend is inevitable, there we placeGerman Syrup. It cures. You area live man yet if you take it.
