I write unto you, young men, because ye have overcome the wicked one. I write unto you, little children, because ye have known the Father.

15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. 17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the Will of God abideth for ever.

6

"Love not."

We have already been taught to be careful to love God and one another as we ought.

Page 7: 1 john 2e

Now we are taught the things we should not lovenot love.

7

As God's children we must have no affectionno affection whatsoever for the worldworld nor its stuffstuff.

It is impossibleimpossible to love the Lord and this world at the same time.

The two are in total conflicttotal conflict.

This world, its stuff, and its pleasures are alwaysalways striving to seduceseduce people away from God.

Page 8: 1 john 2e

The world thus conceived is a system of values and goals from which God is excluded.

8

The world draws the heart from God; and the more the love of the world prevails, the more the love of God decays.

16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

9

The lust of the flesh = sinful bodily appetites.

Sins like gluttony, drunkenness, fornication, pornography, adultery come out of these appetites.

Example: Sexuality is a gift from Godgift from God for a married couplemarried couple to enjoy and love one another.

Fornication, pornography, and adultery pervertpervert God's gift.

A good appetitegood appetite is a gift from God. GluttonyGluttony is a perversion of that gift.

The pride of life -- The NIV translates this as

"Boasting of what he has and does."

The TLB says, "The pride that comes from wealth and importance."

Matthew 6 19 Lay not up for your-selves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: 20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in Heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: 21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
