1 Introduction

This sewing pattern is for a disposable medical gown. It is one-size. The medical gown must be made from awaterproof material; we recommend a lightweight non-woven polypropylene (approx 30 gsm). Please note:

• This pattern has been created to minimise the number of seams in the garments. This is because water can getin through the seams. Consequently the construction is a little strange, so please read the instructions carefully.

• The seam allowance for this pattern is 1 cm. If using a non-woven material then it will not fray so it is nonecessary to finish the seams. However, you may find construction quicker with an overlocker.

• If printing out the PDF pattern on A4 paper, please make sure that your printer is set to print at 100% scale.Print the first page as a test, and check the size of the 5cm square. Note: the PDF pattern has been printedassuming that you are cutting on the fold. As only one Tie Strap is required you may want to cut that first beforefolding the fabric. The PDF pages are numbered, and the pages tile together as shown in the diagram below.

2 Cutting layout and dimensions

As the fabric has no grain, the orientation of the pieces doesn’t matter, so feel free to move pieces around if it bettersuits the dimensions of your fabric.

3 Sewing instructions

3.1 Notes before you start

• The seam allowance is 1cm.• We suggest that you sew this using an overlocker• The fabric does not fray so there is no need to finish off the edges of the fabric• Try to avoid using pins as these can leave holes allowing water to enter• Make sure the outside of the fabric is the waterproof side. Or if both sides are waterproof it doesn’t matter which

side you choose to be the right side

• In the diagrams, the convention for the right and wrong side of the fabric will be:

3.2 Inserting the sleeves

• On the main body piece fold the outer edges to the centre, so that the vertical cut lines are on the fold.

Vertical cut

• Fold the sleeve in half lengthways.

• Position the sleeve inside the verical cut on the main body piece, with the open side of the sleeve at the top, thesleeve cuff inside the main body of the garment, and sleeve end opposite the cuffs lined up with the vertical cutedge.


• Sew along each side of the vertical cut to attach the sleeve.

• We recommend that you position the fabric so the sleeve is underneath the gown, and when you get to the baseof the cut, fold the gown around so that you can continue overlocking to the end. There should not be a holeunder the arm.

• Repeat for the opposite sleeve.

3.3 Sewing the shoulder and upper sleeve

• Open out each sleeve so that the cuff is now away from the main body of the fabric.

• Sew along the whole top edge of the sleeve, continuing along the shoulder until you reach the scoop of theneck.

3.4 Attaching the tie straps/belt

• Fold the tie strap (longest strip) in half, and sew along the whole length of the strap.

• Turn the gown right side out.


• Fold the front of the gown at the point marked on the pattern for the tie placement (this is in the centre of thefront, approximately 61cm from the bottom).

• Align the middle of the tie strap at the point

• Ensure you sew in a little from the fold in the fabric

• Note: the fold provides an extra barrier for water, so minimise the number of stitches to ensure a waterproofgown.

3.5 Attaching the neck binding

• Fold the neck binding in half

• Position the binding on top of the gown neckline, so that the centre points match.

• Note: there will be excess neck binding at either side - these will form ties at the neck

• Sew along the whole length of the neck binding

3.6 Thumbhole

• The last thing to do before folding is to cut a thumbhole on the front side of each sleeve. This should be approx2 cm in diameter and positioned 2 cm in from the cuff, and 5 cm away from the seam. When worn the seamshould sit on the back of the hand

• A convenient way to do this is to fold the fabric along the sleeve at the 2 inch point, then fold again 2 cm in fromthe cuff, and then cut 1 cm diagonal
