WELCOME Welcome to Myanmar and the inaugural Burma Skincare Initiative (BSI) Meeting. This is the

first international dermatology meeting to be held in Myanmar and brings together the

Myanmar and international dermatology communities.

World-class dermatologists and scientists from the UK and Germany will present latest

clinical and research information on a range of important skin diseases. We are also delighted

to host the first meeting in Myanmar to be dedicated to dermatology nursing; this will be

delivered by dermatology specialist nurses from the UK at the University of Nursing, Yangon.

The main meeting will be held in the newly opened Wyndham Grand Hotel at the heart of

Myanmar’s economic capital in Yangon. There will be ample opportunities for networking

including at the magnificent Karaweik on Sunday23 February.

We founded the BSI charity, following a visit to dermatology centres in Yangon and Mandalay

in December 2018, with the aim to improve access to skincare for the people of Myanmar.

This is being developed in a sustainable manner by working with the country’s dermatological and healthcare communities across the three domains of education, research and clinical

services. This meeting will be one of the first steps in the process.

Burma and the British has a long and romanticised history. Rangoon, now Yangon, in the

1920s, was home to many novelists and poets alike: from George Orwell and Somerset

Maugham to Pablo Neruda. Myanmar hosts a collective of diverse landscapes with

mesmerising quality woven together by the fascinating cultures and traditions of 135 ethnic

groups; not to mention the food and the people with unparalleled hospitality, that bring the

country to life. It also contains the newly awarded 2019 UNESCO world heritage site, Bagan

which was the first capital of the Kingdom of Burma founded in the 9th century AD.

February is an ideal time to visit Myanmar. We do hope you will be able to stay in Myanmar

for a few days after the conference ends to see more of this wonderful but little-known

country.
