DIVISION 2 8 ' s CONVENTION PROGRAM The scheduling o f events comprising the APA Convention i n New York, September 1- 5, i s now complete and the assignment o f meeting rooms i n the hotels has been an- nounced. Pages 3-11 of this issue of the Newsletter l i s t the Division 28 pro- gram material for the convenience of members. Notice that most of the ses- sions are to be held i n the Sheraton Centre. George Bigelow, the 1979 Program Chair for Division 28, has worked diligently to arrange symposia, paper presentations and invited addresses of substantial diversity and interest. He has suc- ceeded i n attracting several outstand- ing invited speakers and i n scheduling the program so as to minimize conflict among sessions of common interest to Division 28 members. Conflicts that do occur result from scheduling decisions made by other divisions even though Di- vision 28 is cosponsoring the conflict- ing events. Two events of special significance for members of the Division are the business meeting at 4:00 on onday, September 3, and the joint Social Hour with Divisions 3 and 6 on Monday a t 6:00. The business meeting has been poorly attended i n re- cent years and many important policy de- cisions affecting the long-range inter- ests of the Division have fallen to the responsibility of those few comprising a quorum. The election of officers, one i tern on the agenda of the business meet- ing, i s an event o f some importance t o a l l members and it behooves everyone to be present and cast a vote. It would be an impressive sight if a majority of our members would attend one business meet- ing and actively participate i n the af- fairs of the Division. Let's establish the precedent this year. CARIBBEAN CONFERENCE ON BEHAVIOR ANALYSIS The f i r s t annual Caribbean Conference on Behavior Analysis will be held January 8- 12, 1980, a t the U.S. Virgin Island Col- lege - St. Thomas Campus. The Confer- ence will address behavioral programs for children and youth. Appropriate to- pics for discussion include: behavioral treatment for severely disturbed chil- dren; community-based programs; s t a f f and parent training; substance abuse; and cross-cul tural appl ications of behav- ior analysis. Invited speakers are Drs. Alan Kazdin, Ivar Lovaas and Peter Nathan. Due to space limitations at the College, early registration is suggested. Costs for the conference will range from $175- $240 per person which wi 11 include regis- tration, four nights lodging at the Col- lege, ground transportation to and from the airport, and nine cafeteria-style meals. Airfare will be arranged at the lowest possible rates. Applications w i l l be accepted on a f i r s t come basis and application deadline is November 20, 1979. For further information and call for pa- pers, write to: Conference Coordinator, Caribbean Conference on Behavior Analy- sis, Box 133, Owings Mills, Maryland 21117. GROUP ON TOBACCO SMOKING FORMED I n view of the demonstrated health haz- ard of tobacco smoking and the fact that approximately 68% o f male veterans hos- pitalized within the VA system smoke, an interest group is bei ng formed wi th i n Division 18 to serve as a forum for psy- chologists interested i n the area o f to- bacco smoking.
