-------------INTRODUCTION

In order to better ensure consistency in reporting offenses to the Offender-Based Transaction System (OBTS) Program~ this index was compiled. Basically, all state offenses for which an individual could be incarcerated for six (6) months or more, are included.

Information is provided in several areas: Proper name of offense (i.e., Rape), appropriate NCIC Code (i.e., 1l01), Wyoming Statutory Citation (i.e., 6-4-302), Class (F=felony, r~=misdemeanor), Penalty (i.e., 5-50 years, and fine, if any), and a remarks section to provide further explanation. Not all state offenses possess a specific National Crime Information Center (NCJC) Code, therefore, the "Free Text" version is used. "NMT" translates to "Not More Than" with respect to prescribed penalties - fines are also expressed in maximum dollar amount.

Two indices are provided: Alphabetical and numerical. The alphabetical index (which appears before the offense material) is arranged to facilitate location of a page number when NCIC Code and Statute Citation are not known: Child abandonment (cited also as Abandonment, Child) can be found on page 14.0. At the back of the publication is the numerical index, organized by statute cit~tions: 14-2-106, for example, can be found on page 14.0 (Child abandonment). If only the NCIC Code is known, then one need look only in the basic text of material because offenses are organized by asending NCIC Code: Code 5203, for example, is on page 20.0 - Dangerous weapons, There are exceptions to this rule, therefore, some NCIC Codes will not be in sequence.

As an added feature, the page numbers (1.0, 2.0, etc.) permit updates without reproducing the entire document - this will doubtless have to be accomplished after legislative sessions.
