There are others online that provide other information about him. I always like my students to learn about an author before they read his/her novel. I tell them that as they read, they should be looking for personal facts about the author that might have been woven into the story. They always find something connected with the author’s life. Baseball is a major part of the novel and one would expect that Spinelli played baseball when he was young, however, in two interviews I read, he said that he never played it.
