IT'S A CAR FOR CHILDRENWITH AN

ENGINE FOR GROWN UPS.

The new BMW 3 Series considers the future of today's children: it's designedto be recyclable.

At the same time, It fulfils the desires of todays driver. Both the 3201 and the 3251 sport new 24· valve 6 cylinder engines which

produce 12% more power than their predecessors. (And they do It while producingless pollution. They're fitted with closed loop 3·way catalytrc converters.)

Not only that, the engines 'think'. Digital Motor Electronics monitor the wayyou drrve and adjust the engine's functions accordingly. The results are felt insmoother performance, better fuel economy and lower maintenance costs.

Improvements which are matched by equally exceptional road-holding and braking. THE NEW BMW 3 SERIES

VINTAGE AND HISTORIC RACINGThe Vintage and Historic Class was introduced in 1985 to meet thegrowing interest and enthusiasm for old racing and sports cars.Over recent years we have seen some fine examples of Grand Prixcars. This year is no exception, with Ian Cheyney driving the HalfordSpecial which ran in the 1926 British Grand Prix, and David Duffy,a past winner at Brighton, in his superb 21/2 litre Grand PrixConnaught.ERA R4D has won at Brighton many times in the hands of bothRaymond Mays and KenWharton. We can be confident of a polishedand fast time driven by Anthony Mayman today. As well as outright winner of the class, we have a race within a race;the VSCC Handicap. Harold Smith with the splendid 1916Indianapolis Sunbeam or David Biggins with the evocative VauxhallRowley must be the favourites to take the trophy this year.

TheMotor Cycles

BRIGHTONCan a year go so quickly? With weather that has gone wet with a vengeance time

seems to have flown by, so let us hope this year the weather will relent because one thingthat the "Straight liners" need is a good dry track.

As time passes we all of us seem to be hemmed in with more and more regulationsand 1993 is to bring us the much proclaimed "Harmonisation" - has anylhing else inrecent years created more disharmony? In our world of motor and motor cycle sport theregulations are becoming increasingly stringent, particularly regarding exhaust levels. This is having the direct effect of ruling out much of the sport's historic machinery astheir wild camshaft timings, exotic fuels and pure mechanical sound levels mitigateagainst them. These types of engines do not take kindly to silencing systems, so we areslowing lOSing the sights and sounds of these living archives of British engineeringhistory.

However, the present day whispering giants are producing performances in pure roadtrim and mainly on unleaded fuels that are simply stunning. Those who can recall lastyear's Speed Trials will remember that the performances of at least three of the bikeswere in the same time bracket as those cars who came through into the "Top Twelve"run-off, and those bikes were road legal. Certainly the final runs for the bikes produceda very close contest and one that got me all fired up - and I have been involved withthe Speed Trials for some thirty years.

Can we expect more of the same this year? I predict that we can; keep an eye on No.336 Ian King who was last year's bike F.T.D. A dark horse may well be No. 331 TerryMartin who had mechanical problems last year, but showed his potential on his first run.Never to be discounted are those West Country men, the Grainger brothers, Fred andMike. "Ride 'em up from Plymouth, run 'em, and then ride 'em back home". True roadbikes, the same that anyone can buy, but with a performance that would have obliteratedthe blown nitro burners of but a few years ago.

Our thanks to the Brighton and Hove Motor Club for our invitation, to all those behindthe scenes who work so hard to provide this annual speed festival, and to you thespectator. Have an enjoyable day and thank you for your support.
