GUIDE FOR BIBLIOGRAPHICAL REFERENCES

All papers, thesis, dissertations…, must contain their information sources. For better understanding the bibliographical references must respect the NP 405 (portuguese rules 405).

The elements should be removed from the document itself, and mainly from the first page of the book. If this is not possible, you should see the first and last pages, last page of the book, cover, spine, preface, etc..

In Portugal there are a set of rules supplied by the Portuguese Institute of Quality. We Will present the standard NP 405.

- The information is transcribed as described in the publication;- Typographic presentation – in bibliographies, to highlight titles and their complements, may be used: underlined, italic or “ ";

- Abbreviations:

- names of authors if they become clearly identified, ex: KOTLER, P.- títles of publications in series, ex: Harvard Business Review – HBR- words and current terms used in the bibliographical references, ex: ed., p., vol., anot., trad., compil., S.l., S.n.

- Use of capitals:-according to the orthographic rules of each language;-first letter of each zone;-surname of the author, when at the beginning of the bibliographical references, ex: FARINHA, Jorge;-names of institutions, where at the beginning of the bibliographical references, ex: UNIVERSITY OF PORTO. EGP-

UPBS;-initials of titles of periodicals, ex: Executive Digest;-initials of the names of institutions (if not main entries), ex: International Monetary Fund.

- more than 3 authors – refer just the first one followed by [et al.] ex: BORGES, António [et al.]

- author unknown – starts by the title, if you find that information then use straight brackets

ex: [HADERT, H.]

- authors with official positions – Presidents of the Republic, Ministers,etcex: PORTUGAL. Presidente da República, 1996-2006

- spanish authors:ex: COSTA GARCIA, Mercedes; GALEOTE MUÑOZ, María del Pilar; SEGURA

- author institution – when the author belongs to ministries, legislative bodies, courts, etc.., follow this example:

ex: PORTUGAL. Ministry of Finance

- author collectivity group eventual – congresses, seminars, symposiums, etc. must be this way: name, number, local and date.ex: CONFERENCE OF LOGISTICS OF THE PORTUGUESE ASSOCIATION OF LOGISTICS, 6th, Lisbon, 2003.

- literary editors, compilers, annotators, etc. – If they appear highlighted on the first page, must be considered as authors, adding to the name, the abbreviations of functions preceded by a comma.ex: KINSEY, James, ed. lit.

Títles:

- title or multiple titles in various languages -If they have the same printing relief, consider the title which appears on the first place;

- transcribe the complementary title for a better understanding;

- titles or title complement may be shortened (not at the beginning of the title) as long as do not lose essential information. Any omissions should be mentioned by reticence;

- titles with initials or acronyms are developed like complementary title.

Secondary responsibility the names of persons or groups with secondary responsibility and its functions, may appear after the title or the complementary title, in the same order that appears in the document: Ex: BREALEY, Richard A.; MYERS, Stewart C. – Principles of Corporate Finance. Trad. Maria do Carmo Figueira; tec. rev. J.C. Rodrigues da Costa.

Edition:the number edition must be showed like appears in the source but these elements can be shortened:

Ex: 4th rev. Ed./ Nuova ed./ 5ª ed. actual./1st ed. repr. with correct.

Data publication:

Place: – transcript as provided in source; – to distinguish locations with the same name add the name of the state, province, country, etc..

comma separated: Ex: Cambridge, Mass.; – place of publication unknown: [S.l.]

Publisher: – publisher's name may be abbreviated if they do not cause ambiguity: Ex: Presença (Editorial Presença) – publisher unknown: [s.n.] – place and publisher unknown showed the print data in brackets curved:Ex: [S.l.: s.n.], 1980 (Guarda: Tipografia Veritas)

Date: – is transcribed in Arabic numbers;– year of publication unknown, use dates of printing, copyright, legal deposit or presumed, the

brackets: imp. 1985; cop.1987; D.L. 1978; [1983?]; [198-?].
