INTRODUCTION EUROPEAN SME’s
• What usually gets lost is that more than 99% of all European businesses are, in fact,
SMEs provide 2 out of 3 of the private sector jobs and contribute to more than half
58% of the total value-added created by businesses in the EU. Moreover, SMEs are the true back-bone of the European economy, being primarily responsible for wealth and economic growth, next to their key role in innovation and R&D.
• What is even more intriguing is that 19 out of 21 SMEs are actually micro enterprises with less than 10 employees. Hence, the mainstay of Europe's economy are micro firms, each providing work for two persons, in average. This is probably one of the EU's best kept secrets! The overall SMEs has an average from 2003 to 2010 of less than 5 employees.
• 2003 the Commission adopted Recommendation 2003/361/EC regarding the SME definition
• Today's Economic Crisis is imperiling this enriching base tissue for the EU economy.
• Initiatives to increase women statistics as entrepreneurs such as the Ambassadors Program
had 56 new women led companies arising from the program in its first year. Below 5% of women entrepreneurs in science and technology in most countries surveyed with exceptions of Germany 10% -15% and Latvia 24%.
• Only 8% of Patents granted in EU are for women, as well as only 20% of the business started with venture capital belong to women entrepreneurs.

Government or EU Funded Research related to Smart Grids and Energy
Recent Past: Infrastructure Platforms For Interoperability Robustness
IRRIIS• This project already finished consisted in developing a mathematical model that correlates failures in different
networks (electrical and telecommunications). The project was lead by Fraunhofer Institut with 14 other partners.(2006-2009)
SAFEGUARD• This project already finished consisted in improving security in electrical networks when interconnecting with
other networks. The project was lead by Queen Mary’s College (London) with the participation of 4 other partners. (2001-2003)
EXAMINE• This project already ended consisted in the development of a control system to manage vulnerabilities in the
European infrastructure for electrical power exchange. The leader was Red Eléctrica de España (Spanish Transmission Operator). (2001-2002)
Current Smart Grid and Greener Environment Initiatives R&D Involvement:
VERDE• This project consists in the development of the electric vehicle and the entire infrastructure around it. The project
is lead by SEAT (Spanish auto manufacturer) with the participation of 35 companies and research institutions in Spain including Major Utilities and Electricity Vendors.
ENERGOS• This project consists in the development of a Smart Grid platform for distribution companies. The project is lead
by Unión Fenosa Distribución with the participation of 16 other companies and research institutions.
EMILI• Emergency Management In Large Infrastructures is a project covering Electrical grids, Airports and Public
transportation networks. Project Leader is Fraunhofer Institut, includes 7 companies, universities and Institutes.
REDES 2025• This project consists in developing the necessary R&D for the transmission and distribution networks in 2025.
The consortium is lead by Futured, a Spanish association of companies related to the electricity sector, with 70 companies and research institutions all related to the electricity sector.
iTESLA 2012• This project juts started and if is to improve coordination of the Transmission Operators in Europe with regards to
data exchange, and emergency situational awareness.
