Pre-field Interpretation of Satellite Data

The False Colour Composite (FCC) of LISS-4 satellite imagery having 5.6 m spatial resolution

satellite data at 1:50,000 scale was used for pre-field interpretation work. Taking the help of topo

sheets, geology, geo-morphology and by using the image elements, the features were identified and

delineated the boundaries roughly. Each feature was identified on image by their image elements like

tone, texture, colour, shape, size, pattern and association. A tentative legend in terms of land cover

and land use was formulated. The sample area for field check was selected covering all the

physiographic, land use/land cover features cum image characteristics.

Ground Truth Collection

Both topo sheets and imagery were carried for field verification and a transverse plan using existing

road network was made to cover as many representative sample areas as possible to observe the

broad land use features and to adjust the sample areas according to field conditions. Detail field

observations and investigations were carried out and noted the land use features on the imagery.

Post Field Work for Land Use/Land Cover Classification

The base maps of the study area were prepared, with the help of Survey of India Toposheets on

1:50,000 scale. Preliminary interpreted land use and the land cover features boundaries from IRS-1,

sensor LISS-4 having 5.6 m spatial resolution, False Colour Composites were modified in light of field

information and the final thematic details were transferred onto the base maps. The final interpreted

and classified thematic map was cartograph. The cartographic map was categorically differentiate

with standard colour coding and described features with standard symbols. All the classes were

identified and marked by the standard legend on the map. The following Land Cover classes were

derived and classified as under:

1. Agricultural land

2. Settlements

3. Dense Forest

4. Open scrub

5. Stone Quarry

6. Water Bodies

7. Salt Pan

8. Mud flow

As seen from the land cover classes that were derived indicated that appears to be the land use pattern that the villagers are engaged, however there is a maximum area of open scrub land which can be later developed into a cultivable land. It is observed from the LULC that the total area present under the settlement area (Build up area-land rural/urban, barren land and road infrastructure) which covers 10.76% (1.35 sq. km approx). It is observed that maximum settlements were seen in Sanpari, Mangalkqi and Mota Morsal area

which is shown in Figure 3. Overall the area having sparse densely populated with agricultural field

well distributed in all portion of the study area except the open scrub portion of the study area. The

area of open scrub maximum having cactus which is second largest in the LULC class i.e. 29.30 %

The presence of water bodies including the river, dam, canal, tributaries and ponds as seen from the subsequent Table 4 is about 8.99% (1.13 sq.km). It is also observed that the Bhogava river is also passing through the 2km radius of the SV-08-Ratanpar area. Various small and large rivulets present in the study area. Various small and large water ponds were also present in every parts of the study area with various small and large water bodies which are being utilized for various domestic and agricultural purposes by the villagers as well as industrial purposes. It is observed that the SV-08 station area having lesser portion of industrial activities which is about 0.96 % (0.12 sq. km) which is seen in the Mota-Morshal to Ratanpar road area. .

agricultural land. There is no National Park, Wildlife Sanctuary, Biosphere Reserve, Tiger Reserve,

exist within the 2 km radius of the study area.

The presence of water bodies including the river, dam, canal, tributaries and ponds as seen from the

subsequent figures as well as Tables is about 12.74 % (1.6 sq.km).

The landuse and landcover classification was made by procuring and analyzing the satellite data for

identification of different land features along the stretch of 500m alway either side of proposed

pipeline route and around 2 km of radial distance from SV stations to observed the likely impacts due

to the activities on the identified features. The details regarding classified features are explained

above in different sectionalized route (the whole route was divided into different segments of 10 km

each along the whole pipelin route. 196 KM).

Physical Characteristics of Soil

Physical characteristics of soils were determined through specific parameters along Main Pipeline

route viz. particle size distribution, bulk density, porosity, water holding capacity, texture and are

presented in Table 2.

Regular cultivation practices increase the bulk density of soils thus inducing compaction. This results

in reduction in water percolation rate and penetration of roots through soils. The soils with low bulk

density have favourable physical conditions whereas those with high bulk density exhibit poor

physical conditions for agriculture crops. The bulk density of the soil in the study area ranged

between 1.08-1.13g/cc which indicates favourable physical condition for plant growth. The Infiltration

rate was found in the range of 17.21-21.67cm/min as shown in Table 2, water holding capacity was

observed between 38.67-46.17 % whereas the texture of soil in the area was found to be silty clay in

Ratanpar, Chumpani, Khareda and Vankiya villages, Loamy Sand in Ravrani, Chandreliya, Wadharva

and Anjar, Sandy Clay in Ranipat, Jivapar, Kamaria, Rameshwar Nagar and Lakhpar villages.

Chemical Characteristics of Soil

Data collected for chemical characteristics of soils through selected parameters viz. pH, soluble

cations and anions, organic content and fertility status in the form of NPK values and organic matter

are presented in Table 3.

pH is an important parameter indicative of alkaline or acidic nature of soil. It greatly affects the

microbial population as well as solubility of metal ions and regulates nutrient availability. Variation in

the pH of the soil in the study area is presented in Table 3 and it was found to be in the range of 6.81-

7.84.

The important soluble cations in the soil are calcium and magnesium whose concentration levels

ranged from 197.81-296.66mg/Kg and 80.25-180.54mg/Kg respectively. Chlorides were in the range

of 160.51-240.48mg/Kg.

Meteorological Data

The hourly meteorological data recorded at site was converted to the mean hourly meteorological

data as specified by CPCB and the same was used in the model. In absence of site specific mixing

depths, mixing depths published in IMD Publication “Atlas of Hourly Mixing Height and Assimilative

Capacity of Atmosphere in India” by S.D.Attri, Siddhartha Singh, B. Mukhopadhyay, and

A.K.Bhatnagar (2008) was used. Meteorological input data generated at the project site (wind speed,

wind direction, ambient temperature, mixing height and stability class) has been used for modelling

are given in Table 1 and 2.
