Project: Men's Cards

4Using the patterned paper, concertina fold along strip 6cm wide (2½") – join pieces

together if necessary. Stick the car scenes onto thefive folded pages.

5Cut and fold a strip of black card 22 x 7cm (8¾x 2¾") so front cover is slightly longer. Decorate

book cover with scraps of paper and add text usingBeatnik alphabet.

6Make two circular tabs from covered black card.Fix red tab to concertina. Stick booklet into

cover. Fix other tab to front cover with a snap forextra strength. Cut a slit in main card and insert tab.

This whole project was inspired by myson. Well, his hair, anyway! If you look at the second card, youcan see I was trying to think of a card

to make him for his 19th birthday (it never getseasier!) and decided to add a fun element tothis Paperbag Studios stamp, as at that time hishair was long and curly. The jester’s hat is similar

to one he made at school many years ago, during which he managed to break three of theschool sewing machines and still nevercompleted it!

This led me on to looking at quirky cards formen – cards with an element of surprise or fun.I searched my stamps for men and boys, andeven boys’ toys!

Most of the paper I’ve used for each card comesfrom the ‘Get Happy’ range by Cosmo Cricket. Iabsolutely love this paper – it’s bright, in yourface, sort of urban. It’s based around the colours

red, blue, yellow and green and every sheet, even the single colour paper, has scratch marksand doodling, graffiti and scribbling. I startedout with a few of the double-sided sheets, butthen bought the 8" x 8" pad as well and haveused them again and again. By the time Istarted these cards, I’d already used quite a lotof my stash, so they tend to use up strips andscraps, criss-crossing and overlapping just as Ifelt like. I’ve hoarded every piece remaining, down to the tiniest scrap, and I’ve still got loadsto play with.

I’ve stamped everything in black and used blackcard stock to add more impact. The text comesfrom a variety of sources and quite often I’ve

just picked out a few of the words from a stamp, either so that it fits onto the space available orbecause it made more sense that way.

MaterialsStamps Helen used...

• Stampers Anonymous by Tim Holtz – The Journey (carstamp, part of quotation); Travelling Friends (‘journey’text)

• Mo’Be Alphabet – Beatnik (or similar)

Other materials...

• StazOn inkpad – Jet Black

• Cosmo Cricket scrapbook paper – Get Happy Collection

• Black card

• Circle punch

• Snap or brad

I don’t think cards for men have to be brown

and blue! Go for bright primary colours and

make them sit up and take notice!”

TIPLook at your quotation stamps

then either stamp just the words orphrases you want, or, if the spacing

doesn’t allow this, stamp the whole textand cut out just the words required. You

can even just cut out separate letters

and make completely new words, saving on buying a whole set ofalphabet stamps.

PENNY SAVERSFor small letter stamps you can’t beat the Studio G

TIPI stuck a smaller button underneath the mainbutton to raise it off the surface of the card. As the

twine is quite thick, this enables me to tie itround the button quite easily.
