Summary: On June 18,2007 Daly Environmental Contracting (DEC) delineated and excavated the contaminated siltlclay soils surrounding the tank grave at the Whitney Residence. Groundwater which had been observed during the previous tank removal was confirmed to be perched water confined to the pea stone gravel which the tank had been backfilled with. 14.22 tons of affected soils were removed and stockpiled. Confirmation soil samples and photos (both attached) document the remediation. The stockpiled soils were summarily shipped to and thermally treated by ESMI of NH on 7/26/07. Clean backfill and restorative landscaping completed the project.

Detail: Silty, clay soil stained grey with fuel oil was observed under the tank grave and along the foundation wall of the house. Contamination progressed approximately 3 feet laterally along the wall in both directions, and was especially evident in the right hand comer (downgradient area) of the foundation excavation. All stained soils were removed down to the bottom of the footer of the foundation of the house. Confirmatory sampling taken at the base of the footer indicates that minor soil contamination remains at 80 PPM in the comer of area. Considering that the VT-DEC's residential TPH action level for hydrocarbon contaminated soil is 200 PPM, and the lab results show 80 PPM in situ, DEC suggests that no additional action is warranted at this site regarding these soils.
