Today's Plan

Plan

1) Explain/Discuss bellwork2) Emphasize objective(s) (read above and see next slide)3) Ask about birthdays4) View and discuss prototype testing notes5) Discuss the upcoming "boat building" project and rubric6) (Time permitting) Get in pairs and start planning your "boat"

WRITE THIS IN YOUR AGENDA!Homework: Bring materials to build your "boat"

Notes

Steps 4 and 5 are the steps of the EDP where we test our prototypes

Engineering Design Process-Prototype Testing

The 4th step in the eng. design process is testing your prototype Often, the prototype does not work very well at first Testing a prototype can be dangerous (see picture below) By testing the prototype, the designers find problems to fix They fix the problems and then test it again. They repeat this

over & over. (This is step 5 of the eng design process.)

Here is a picture of Orville and Wilbur Wright testing their prototype airplane

SPI 0807.T/E.1 (Prototype Testing)

The procedures and tools for testing a prototype are dependent upon the type of technology and the purpose for that technology.

For Example: You would not test a new cell phone the same way you would test a new jet airplane or a new football helmet.

Discuss These Questions:A) How would you test a prototype of a new type of eyeglasses?B) How would you test a prototype of a new type of headache medicine?C) How would you test a prototype of a new type of camping tent?

In this scene Mr. Fox is showing Mr. Wayne a prototype of aspecial vehicle called "the Tumbler." Bruce later paints itblack and uses it as his "Batmobile" vehicle.

Does it come in black?

How do you like

it?

1) Working with a partner or working alone, design, build, and test a toy boat using recyclable materials. 2) You may also use materials such as glue and duct tape3) The boat must be able to float for at least 60 seconds.4) The boat must have a flat top at least 18 cm long (about seven inches) and 10 cm wide (about four inches). 5) The hull of the boat can not exceed 36 cm in length (about fourteen inches) and 30 cm in width (about twelve inches) 6) The boat should be no more than 22 cm in height (about nine inches)7) The boat must have a name on it.

NOTE: We will test them in water this Friday!
