5 steps to finding a corner

measurement point using a 1m batten

Page 6: 1 Clew and tack Measurement Points ERS – G.4.1 Clew Point The intersection of the foot and the leach, each extended as necessary ERS – G.4.3 Tack Point.

6

Step 1

Tape some paper to the back of the sail in the area of the corner point

Page 7: 1 Clew and tack Measurement Points ERS – G.4.1 Clew Point The intersection of the foot and the leach, each extended as necessary ERS – G.4.3 Tack Point.

7

Page 8: 1 Clew and tack Measurement Points ERS – G.4.1 Clew Point The intersection of the foot and the leach, each extended as necessary ERS – G.4.3 Tack Point.

8

Step 2

Hold the batten at its very ends with one end roughly where the corner

point will be and the other end touching the edge of the sail, held

firmly in place so it can’t move away from the edge

10

Step 3

Move the batten at the corner point end curving it until the LONGEST length of the batten touches the

sail edge

Step 4

Remember

ERS – H.5.3Attachments at a sail edge, other than a bolt rope and tabling, shall be ignored when measuring.

This does not cover attachments at the corner of a sail (remember edges and corners are different)

So, unless otherwise stated, corner attachments are included in measurement.

Head Measurement Point

ERS - G.4.2

• Mainsail : The intersection of the luff, extended as necessary, and the line through the highest point of the sail at 90° to the luff.

(b) Headsail: The intersection of the luff, extended as necessary, and the line through the highest point of the sail, excluding attachments, at 90° to the luff.

(c) Spinnaker: The intersection of the leeches, extended as necessary

Page 29: 1 Clew and tack Measurement Points ERS – G.4.1 Clew Point The intersection of the foot and the leach, each extended as necessary ERS – G.4.3 Tack Point.

29

Where is the head point?

What are the limits on attachment size?

(At a mainsail head, attachments are included).

ERS – G.8.7

(a) At a Corner or an Edge(1) LENGTHAt the Head: The dimension from the head point along the luff or its extension to a line

through the highest point of the attachment at 90o to the luff.At the Tack: The dimension from the tack point along the luff or its extension to a line

through the lowest point of the attachment at 90o to the luff.At the Clew: The greatest dimension from the clew point. At an Edge: The greatest dimension from the sail edge.

(2) WIDTHThe greatest dimension measured perpendicular to the length.

(b) ELSEWHEREThe greatest dimension of the attachment.
