Success in righteousness, thepower to avoid deception and resisttemptation, guidance in our dailylives, healing of the soulthese arebut a few of the promises the Lordhas given to those who will come toHis word.... However diligent we
may be in other areas, certainblessings are to be found only inthe scriptures, only in coming to theword of the Lord and holding fast to
it as we make our way through themists of darkness to the tree of life.

The most important thing in
our lives is the Spirit. I have
always felt that. We mustremain open and sensitive to
the promptings of the Holy
Ghost in all aspects of ourlives.

The gift of the Holy Ghost is
the greatest of all the gifts of
God, as pertaining to this life;and those who enjoy that gift
here and now, will inherit
eternal life hereafter, which isthe greatest of all the gifts of
God in eternity.

In 1847, Brigham Young had a marvelous dreamin which the Prophet Joseph Smith appeared tohim. When Brigham asked whether he had amessage for the brethren, Joseph said, Tell the
people to be humble and faithful, and be sure tokeep the spirit of the Lord and it will lead themright. Be careful and not turn away the small stillvoice; it will teach you what to do and where togo; it will yield the fruits of the kingdom. Tell thebrethren to keep their hearts open to conviction,so that when the Holy Ghost comes to them, their hearts will be ready to receive it...They cantell the Spirit of the Lord from all other spirits; itwill whisper peace and joy to their souls; it willtake malice, hatred, strife and all evil from theirhearts; and their whole desire will be to do good, bring forth righteousness and build up the
kingdom of God

Brigham Young to WilfordWoodruff while the latter waspresident of the church: I wantyou to teach the people-and Iwant you to follow this counselyourself- that they must laborand so live as to obtain the Holy
Spirit, for without this youcannot build up the kingdom;without the spirit of God you arein danger of walking in the dark,
and in danger of failing toaccomplish your calling asapostles and as elders in thechurch and kingdom of God.

There is no doubt, if a personlives according to the
revelations given to God'speople, he may have theSpirit of the Lord to signify tohim his will, and to guide and
to direct him in the dischargeof his duties, in his temporalas well as his spiritual
exercises. I am satisfied, however, that in this respect,we live far beneath ourprivileges.

I wrote down a few lines every dayfor years. I never missed a day nomatter how tired I was or how early Iwould have to start the next day. Before I would write, I would ponderthis question: 'Have I seen the handof God reaching out to touch us or
our children or our family today?' As Ikept at it, something began tohappen. As I would cast my mindover the day, I would see evidence ofwhat God had done for one of usthat I had not recognized in the busymoments of the day.
