October 28, 2021

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Welcome to our eighth annual gala celebration of the diocesan priesthood in the Diocese of Worcester – and our return to an in-person Celebrate Priesthood-Taste of the Diocese gathering.

While the Coronavirus pandemic did not allow us the opportunity to share in fellowship last year, we are grateful for the chance to gather at our new venue, Saint Paul Diocesan Junior-Senior High School, to recognize the gift of the priesthood in our lives and the opportunity to share our memories.

We take this opportunity to celebrate the contributions that so many priests, both active and retired, have made to the Diocese of Worcester. Our priests are always there for us, in good times and in challenging times, including the past 18 months of the pandemic. By their example, they inspire us with a message of unending love that God extends to each of us through His Son, Jesus Christ. By their actions, their words and their commitment to the vocation of the priesthood, our priests have responded to a call to bring God’s saving grace into our lives that we may strive to live the life of holiness to which we are all called.

Proceeds from this evening’s event benefit the Priests’ Retirement Fund, along with bequests and gifts received during the past year designating this fund. On behalf of all those who worked so diligently to bring this night to fruition, I thank all of you for your generosity and willingness to help us raise needed support for priests’ retirement care. I am confident that each of you joins with me in thanking our priests by providing for their care in their senior years with dignity.

Allow me to express my thanks to our sponsors who are all listed in this program, along with the many advertisers and donors, some of whom made coupons available in this program book. I also wish to add my gratitude to those who made significant donations in memory of deceased priests or in honor of priests who still serve our parishioners. Their generosity is helping to make this event a success.

Join with me in making this annual tradition a tribute to the love and devotion we all share for our priests. May we frequently and fervently raise our voices in prayerful gratitude to Almighty God for the gift of the priesthood.

With every prayerful best wish, I remain

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Reverend Robert J. McManus, S.T.D. Bishop of Worcester

THE ONGOING NEED IN THE priests’ retirement FUND

Have you ever faced the need to care for an elderly family member? You know first-hand

how costs can add up when dealing with medical bills, assistance in living and many other issues, even before facing skilled nursing home care!

In the Diocese of Worcester, the customary retirement age for diocesan clergy is 75 years of age. On average, there are 50 retired priests in our diocese who are cared for by our Diocese following many decades of service to our parishes and other diocesan ministries.

For many years the cost of care for retired priests exceeded available resources by hundreds of thousands of dollars per year. We are beginning to see light at the end of the tunnel thanks to this ongoing fundraiser, the newly established Ash Wednesday Collection, proceeds from the annual Partners in Charity appeal, and earnings from the Forward in Faith endowment established more than 20 years ago. We are also seeing progress in reducing expenses without sacrificing quality of care thanks to the work of a dedicated committee. Lastly, we look forward to the impact that additional resources will make from earnings generated by the future endowment established by the Legacy of Hope capital campaign.

Many people have wondered how this initiative relates to the Retirement Fund for Religious Collection which has been taken up in the month of December for more than three decades. That national collection is used exclusively to assist vowed religious communities (sisters, brothers and religious order priests) who face crippling retirement costs for the elderly and frail members of their communities. Canonically they operate their finances separately from the dioceses in which they served or are still serving.

Join us in Celebrating the

Gift of Priesthood throughout the year!

The gift of the priesthood is more than a personal vocation to which each priest is called. It is a gift to the community of faith. We are never without the sacramental graces conferred on each of us, thanks to the presence of a priest.

We invite you to consider ways in which you can show gratitude for the priests who have made a difference in your life as we face the financial challenge of caring for our retired priests.

You are invited to make a gift to the Priests’ Retirement Fund at any time during the year to honor a priest who helped you or your family. Visit worcesterdiocese.org/celebrate-priesthood.

Consider making a Legacy Gift to the Retired Priests’ Fund in your estate planning so that you make a long-term difference in the care of our retired priests. Visit worcesterdiocese.plannedgiving.org for more information.

Jesus is the one who calls, not the priest, nor the bishop or the Pope. It is Jesus who gazes at him with love, who shows him the people, who shows him the needs of the people of God and says, ‘if you wish, come help.’

In Gratitude

We wish to express our gratitude for the generations of spiritual guidance offered by the priests who served throughout the years in the historical parishes of Gardner.

Annunciation Parish is proud to continue to build upon the work done by the priests who have guided us through our merger, and those who served at the former Sacred Heart of Jesus, Our Lady of The Holy Rosary, St. Joseph, and Holy Spirit parishes.

We offer thanks and blessings to these good men.

Seminarians Pay Tribute to Our Retired Priests

In Service to the Universal ChurchDeacon Michael Hoye

“Francis will take good care of you when you get to Rome. Don’t be worried one bit!” These were Fr.

Dennis O’Brien’s consoling words to me when I told him that I was afraid to begin my first year of studies in Rome. Since I did not know Fr. Dennis’ lexicon of nicknames, I thought he was talking about the Pope. He laughed and informed my ignorance of our Worcester priest who was a Canon of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. Msgr. Francis Kelly improved religious education

around the nation while serving in D.C. and authored a number of books. He became the rector of Pope St. John XXIII National Seminary. Msgr. Kelly later served as the superior the Pontifical North American College’s house for priests enrolled in graduate programs. After hearing all this from Fr. Dennis, I was a bit intimidated by such an impressive curriculum vitae. With one of the friendliest smiles and warmest greetings, I knew Fr. Dennis was right. Although far from home, Msgr. Kelly modeled what it means to be a Worcester priest at heart. Msgr. Kelly, as you wel-comed priests for a new era, your generosity, talents, and priestly service do not go unnoticed. Thank you for your dedication to Christ and for all the lessons you taught me.

Inspired and Passionate PreachingBrian James

The retired priests of the Worces-ter Diocese have dedicated their lives to spreading the message

of the Gospel and have led countless souls to Christ. They are true shepherds that have walked with their sheep and have nourished them with the grace of

the sacraments. One priest that has had a profound impact in my life is Father William Sanders. With his passionate preaching and pastoral care he has encouraged me to take my faith more seriously and form a deeper relationship with Christ. He encour-aged me to become an altar server and has always been an encouraging figure in my priestly discern-ment. His Priesthood has been an amazing gift in my life and I am very grateful for all that Fr. Sanders has done at St. Louis and all that he has done for our Diocese.

A Witness to the Importance of PrayerJohn Sullivan

Fr. Nally was pastor of St. John’s in Clinton when I was in high school and for most of my time

in college. I remember a meeting I had with him–I was applying to The Catholic University of America and there was a small scholarship that the university was offering which was only available if you met with

your pastor and received his signature. This was a wonderful meeting with him, he supported my decision to go to a Catholic college, and I was happy to see that he wanted to make sure that it was really a Catholic college. In his preaching, Fr. Nally consistently emphasized the importance of silence and recollection for all Catholics in order to grow in prayer. He always made sure to underscore how essential it is to have a healthy detachment from the world and to anchor one’s life in prayer in order to bring the love of God to others. The example he set as a spiritual father continues to resonate with me.

O Jesus, eternal Priest, keep your priests within the shelter of Your Sacred Heart, where none may touch them. Keep unstained their anointed hands,

which daily touch Your Sacred Body. Keep unsullied their lips, daily purpled with Your Precious Blood.

Keep pure and unearthly their hearts, sealed with the sublime mark of the priesthood. Let Your Holy Love

surround them and shield them from the world’s contagion. Bless their labors with abundant fruit and may the souls to whom they minister be their joy and

consolation here and in heaven their beautiful everlasting crown. Amen

“ I must say that after all the years my Aunt lived at the Charlton

Manor we could not have been more pleased with the care and

attention she received. She was beautifully cared for and truly loved

living in the bed and breakfast of retirement homes. There is so

much to be grateful for and thank you would never be enough to

Michael Turpin the owner who did so much for her and all the other

residents, I saw this so often doing so much for others. There really

are no places with this atmosphere and his staff is amazing.”

Charlie and Lenny Monahan

The Lord is the One who transforms us,

who uses us like bread, takes our life in

His hands, blesses us, breaks us

and shares us and gives us to His people.
