Transcript of 1 Bicycle route Walking route - Homepagina | Stad Gent · From the Miriam Makeba square, cyclists...
06 De Krook and Wintercircus De Krook is a multipurpose location for working and shopping, and also houses the city library. Two new bridges allow pedestrians and cyclists to easily access the city centre. From the Miriam Makeba square, cyclists can follow an incline to directly access a bicycle parking. In the adjacent Wintercircus, offi ce space will be created for organizations and businesses working for instance on digital innovation in media. A concert hall for about 500 people has been planned underneath the inner ring.
07 Visserij Visserij was one of the fi rst bicycle boulevards. These are streets where cyclists have the absolute right of way and where cars cannot overtake. Visserij is part of green climate axis 3 - Zeeschelde. It starts at Krommewal/Minnemeers and goes all the way to greenhub Gentbrugse Meersen. Ghent has eight climate axes. They connect the open space and mainly the fi ve green hubs with the (inner) city. They are intended for use by walkers and bikers.
08 Keizerpark This park was created in the framework of urban renewal project Ledeberg Lives. Urban renewal projects renovate neighbourhoods in various aspects such as residential, green, sports, commerce and mobility. The park now boasts a pedestrian and bicycle bridge that connects Ledeberg and Gentbrugge with the city centre. Its success is so overwhelming that traffi c measures were necessary, such as the conversion of Visserij to a bicycle boulevard.
SHORTCUT: GO TO STOPOVER 20 ‘COHOUSING SINT-ANTONIUS VAN PADUA’ AND CONTINUE THE ROUTE
09 Underneath the E17 overpass This overpass cuts through the Gentbrugge and Ledeberg residential neighbourhoods, creating environmental nuisance. Observe the vast amounts of space underneath the overpass and consider what could be done with all this space should this overpass no longer exist. What new purpose could be given to this part of the city?
02 Bicycle underpass
Henleykaai Bicycle underpasses allow for safe and confl ict-free bicycle routes through the city. This bicycle underpass is located along green climate axis 6 - Lys. It starts at the Bijlokesite and passes by the Blaarmeersen all the way to Sint-Martens-Latem.
03 Bijloke site and STAMFor a long time, hospital care was the focus of activities, but today the Bijloke site is a cultural haven on the banks of the Lys river. It is home to among others the De Bijloke music centre and KASK (royal academy of fi ne arts), but also STAM. This city museum tells the story of Ghent. Eyecatchers include a large aerial photograph of Ghent and temporary exhibitions on the city of tomorrow. The STAM and the Bijloke site are found along green climate axis 6.
04 Verlorenkost This is one example of a cut (a closed street) in the circulation plan. The latter plan opened up space for pedestrians, cyclists, and public transportation. The public space was temporarily reorganized. From the Verlorenkost bridge you have a view of the recent residential project Leiekouter.
05 Rijksarchief (national archives)The striking building clad in white, glazed brick on your left houses the national archives. The ground fl oor of this closed building consists almost entirely of glass, to emphasize its accessibility. A new courtyard was created at the back.
01 Point of departure:
Gent-Sint-Pieters railway station With over 54,000 travellers boarding trains every day, the Gent-Sint-Pieters railway station is Belgium’s third railway station by volume. At the moment, it is being converted into a public transportation junction with integrated bus and tram station, covered bicycle parking lot, and underground parking garage. Along the railway tracks, in the Koningin Fabiolalaan and along the Koningin Mathildeplein, a new part of the city is being built with commercial spaces, offi ces, apartments, and green public space. The conversion of the railway station area is one of the urban development projects. These are large-scale projects that alter the cityscape and which involve the application of all principles behind Space for Ghent.
Bicycle route 20 km WITH POSSIBLE SHORTCUT: 10,5 KM
13 Jozef Vervaenestraat To the right behind you, at the corner of the intersection with Hundelgemsesteenweg is a project comprising 19 social assisted living residences.
14 Welzijnsknoop and park located behind it This project and subsequent projects on the route are part of the urban renewal project Ledeberg Lives. Here, all social services for the neighbourhood are clustered. Behind the building is a neighbourhood park.
15 Corner residence
Hoefi jzerstraat In front of you is a corner residence project by city development company sogent. In various locations within Ledeberg, corner plots were converted to contemporary, high-quality residences by means of creative solutions.
10 Gentbrugse Meersen This park and nature area covers about 240 hectares, and stretches all the way to the Scheldt meander in Destelbergen. The main entrance is located in the middle of residential neighbourhoods. The focus is on recreation. Deeper into this nature area the focus is on nature and woods, with open water here and there to attract water birds. Gentbrugse Meersen is one of the fi ve green hubs. They all exceed 100 hectares in size and are within easy reach from the city centre by bike or public transport.
11 De Porre This project breathes new life into the former De Porre spinning mill, and provides space for green, homes, and public functions in the Moscou-Vogelhoek neighbourhood.
12 The Arsenaal site This is a former central workplace of Belgian national railway company NMBS that is being repurposed. You get a better view of the site once you go underneath the tracks to Oefenpleinstraat.
03 Baudelopark The street that used to cut through this park was removed. This created a large, continuous green space. Thanks to the renovation, there is a better connection between the waterfront quay and the park. In the corner of the park, at Rembert Dodoensdreef, you will fi nd the Gruut brewery.
04 Minnemeers Here is where you will fi nd MIAT Ghent (museum about industry, labour, and textile), and the Minnemeers theatre. A new residential project was completed in the bend of the road, with a connection to the new Willem de Beer park behind it.
05 Nieuwland On your left you will see an old warehouse of the City of Ghent. At the moment we are looking for new development possibilities for this site, along with the Eandis distribution centre for street lighting on Bomastraat nearby.
06 Eandis-site This former distribution centre for street lighting is being turned into a neighbourhood park, facilities and housing. In this project, heritage buildings such as a sportshal from the beginning of the 20th century are being preserved.
07 Entr On the right is restaurant Entr, with behind it the neighbourhood park. This café and restaurant with social employment is part of cultural and meeting centre De Centrale in Ham. Behind it is neighbourhood garden Ham, a quiet, green, public garden where neighbourhood residents can spend quality leisure time. Underneath the open warehouse at the entrance is plenty of space for frolicking.
08 Portus Ganda This transit vessel marina is located on the confl uence of the Lys and Scheldt rivers, next to the Van Eyck swimming pool and Veermanpark. Rodetorenkaai and the terrace at Slachthuisbrug offer a magnifi cent view across the water.
09 Reopening of the Nederschelde With this project, Ghent once again opens up the historic waterway between Portus Ganda and François Laurentplein. Boats will then be able to circumnavigate the entire inner city, including along the Scaldis lock and the renovated Oude Beestenmarkt. This part of the city boasts 3 new bridges: the Bavo bridge and the twin bridges Nieuwbrug and Wijdenaardbrug.

11 Reep This is the fi nal part of the reopening of the Nederschelde.
12 De Krook and Wintercircus De Krook is a multipurpose location for working and shopping, and also houses the city library.
23 Lousbergspark The old printing house for the Het Volk newspaper has made way for a residential project. The inner courtyard was made into a park.
24 Lousbergmarkt This covered market came about thanks to a collaboration between 4 businesses offering local products. This short chain contributes to a climate-neutral Ghent. The market is located in the former Het Hinkelspel cheese-making plant.
25 Portus Ganda This transit vessel marina is located on the confl uence of the Lys and Scheldt rivers, next to the Van Eyck swimming pool and Veermanpark. Rodetorenkaai and the terrace at Slachthuisbrug offer a magnifi cent view across the water.
16 Enclosed area
Moriaanstraat-Weldadigheidsstraat Here too, the neighbourhood was made liveable by intervening in the residential fabric. The enclosed area was opened up. This created room for playing and encounters.
17 Park De Vijvers What used to be castle grounds, is now a park with a pond and an island.
18 P+R Gentbrugge Various park-and-ride facilities on the edge of the city ease traffi c intensity towards the inner city. Here, visitors can transfer onto trams and access the city centre, or hop on bicycles and follow the renovated Brusselsesteenweg.
19 Den Draad This is a sustainable project at a former industrial site with passive houses and energy-effi cient houses, apartments, and places of work. All homes have a private garden, but there is also a great deal of communal public space, including the park.
20 Cohousing Sint-Antonius van Padua This is a sustainable, social, and accessible residential project in and around a former church. There are about 17 residential units for various kinds of households. The church houses communal space.
26 Reopening of the Nederschelde With this project, Ghent once again opens up the historic waterway between Portus Ganda and François Laurentplein. Boats will then be able to circumnavigate the entire inner city, including along the Scaldis lock and the renovated Oude Beestenmarkt. This part of the city boasts 3 new bridges: the Bavo bridge and the twin bridges Nieuwbrug and Wijdenaardbrug.
27 City hall and KoBra The historic city centre squares Korenmarkt and Emile Braunplein are teeming with life thanks to a profound renovation. Korenmarkt is mainly a square of café terraces. Emile Braunplein with its city hall and adjacent city park offers a remarkable sampling of contemporary architecture, as well as space for encounters and events. The squares feature high-quality stops for public transportation, bicycle parking spaces, and public restrooms.
21 Arbed park This former factory site is now home to a park with a multitude of possibilities for play, a mix of private and social residences and apartments, and spaces for enterprise. The site is located along green climate axis 3. Further down, on Kerkstraat (Rute) and Gentbruggeaard there are 2 new major residential projects. These are repurposed industrial sites.
22 Bijgaardehof and Bijgaardepark This project combines a park and a cohousing project within a former factory. The houses on Nijverheidstraat got a garden extension when the park was created. An old railway station was converted into a nursery. The bicycle path along the railway track and a new bicycle tunnel provide a smooth connection with the Dampoort railway station.

THOUGHTFUL USE OF SPACE IN GHENTThe population of Ghent is growing and this requires space: affordable housing in a pleasant area with enough green, options for relaxation, employment, accessibility and open spaces for agriculture and nature development.
Space is scarce, and we need to fi nd the right place for all of these societal needs. This requires thoughtful spatial policy. Not only in the short term, but the long term as well.
The 2030 Structural Vision describes this policy. This is a structural plan that is centred not only around space, but also the people. And this is unique. Small wonder, as it was developed in conjunction with the people of Ghent, users of Ghent, and experts.
HOW DO WE GROW WISELY?We wish to grow ‘wisely’. This means that we will not allow for unchecked growth. We situate the desired spatial developments within the current residential, professional, recreational, and facility destinations. How will we accomplish this? Here are our 5 strategies for facing the challenges in a sustainable and clever manner.
Smart densifi cation and aeratingIn order to accommodate the population growth and need for additional residences, we will implement smart densifi cation and aerating. This means doing more with the available space. For instance building new homes in easily accessible places, and providing more open spaces in other locations.
Cleverly interweaving functionsWe are creating a city where homes, jobs, leisure, and facilities are all found within close proximity. Where greenery is present and people can safely travel by bicycle or public transportation. This is achieved by interweaving all of these functions. It enhances social cohesion and creates space for economic growth.
Stimulating sustainable mobilityWe focus on bicycle urbanism. A network of roads and pathways for pedestrians and cyclists forms the basis for urban development. Facilities link up with this network, which allows it to be profoundly embedded into the structure of the city. At the same time, we aim to achieve selective accessibility. A liveable city must be accessible, but not all the time, everywhere, or in every way.
Providing green and waterGreen and water make the city a pleasant place to live and relax. This is why we are creating a network of blue and green throughout the city. Waterways bring green into the centre and provide cooling, reducing the heat island effect. We green the banks and improve the water quality.
The human focusOur point of reference when we shape space is the living environment of the residents and users of Ghent. We are creating a city for everyone, with everyone. Hence, we emphasize the collective over the individual: we share spaces where we can live, work, and be creative (cohousing, coworking, cocreation). Temporary uses breathe new life into locations..
Ride underneath the railway tracks and follow number 7 of the cycling network going left. Pass by the Gentbrugge cemetary. Leave the bicycle path and turn right into Jules Van Biesbroeckstraat. At the point where the dirt road changes into a paved road, turn left. Cross Gentbruggekouter. Continue along Jules Van Biesbroeckstraat until you reach the Boer Janssens restaurant and sports grounds on your left. Keep going until you reach the end of the parking area (Boer Janssensstraat), and then turn right onto the bicycle path underneath the E17-overpass 09 . Follow the bicycle path along the overpass and turn left into Boswachterstraat. Pass by the allotment gardens, turn right and continue towards the playgrounds. Ride through the Gentbrugse Meersen 10 .Don’t ride underneath the play hill but turn left and continue until you reach Braemkasteelstraat. Turn right and then immediately turn left into Braemstraat towards Brusselsesteenweg. Cross Brusselsesteenweg and go into Jules de Saint-Genoisstraat. On the left is neighbourhood park De Porre 11 .
Turn right into Heidestraat. On the right is the Arsenaalsite 12 .Get off your bike and cross the railroad tracks using the underpass. Continue along Eugeen Zetternamstraat and ride underneath the railroad underpass. Ride towards the P+R Moscou and tram 4 terminus. Turn into Jozef Vervaenestraat 13 . Turn right and ride under the E17 motorway until you reach the crossroads with Pol De Vischstraat. Make a slight turn left, then turn right into Hundelgemsesteenweg (where the tram tracks are). Keep going until you reach the Welzijnsknoop and the park located behind it 14 .. Ride past the Welzijnsknoop on the right through the park and take the exit towards Ledebergstraat, to the right of the garage boxes. Turn right and immediately left into Doorgangstraat. Turn left into Hoefi jzerstraat towards the corner residence Hoekijzerstraat 15
Turn back and follow Doorgangstraat as it bends to the left until you reach Weldadigheidsstraat. You can ride underneath the houses in front of you. Get off your bike and take the path next to the entrance to the underground parking towards enclosed area Moriaanstraat-Weldadigheidsstraat 16 . Ride diagonally through this enclosed area and take the exit at Moriaanstraat. Go right into Moriaanstraat and then go left into Vlinderstraat. Ride into Park De Vijvers 17 towards Brusselsesteenweg and cross this road towards P+R Gentbrugge 18 . Follow Land van Rodelaan and at the bicycle crossing go left into Oude Brusselseweg. Follow Oude Brusselseweg. Beyond the Victoria Regia park, turn right into Kleemburg, where you will fi nd Den Draad 19 . Keeping left, ride through this project along the houses. Take the bicycle exit and ride towards the roundabout (with statue) in Louis Van Houttestraat. Turn left. Further on the right is the old Sint-Antonius van Padua church. Here you fi nd the Cohousing Sint-Antonius van Padua 20 . Go back to the roundabout and exit the street until you reach Kerkstraat. Turn right, pass by the

Ghent, a rare combination
Ghent combines the intimacy of a historic city with the openness of a metropolis.
With about 260,000 residents and more than 75,000 students, Ghent is versatile, historic, and contemporary all at once. A pioneer when it comes to higher education. A city of the arts with international renown. An economically oriented city that focuses on innovation and knowledge technologies.
The local administration stimulates the many initiatives put forth by its citizens who strive towards an open, inclusive, sustainable, wise, and child-friendly city.
