How to Allergy-Proof Your Home- Easy And Effective

Allergies can be caused by many factors, including stress, illness, foods, toxins, pollens, and by many household allergens, such as dust, cleaners, cosmetics, and chemicals contained in polishes, waxes, glues, paints, cigarette smoke, and other substances. Dust contains potential allergens such as mould, dust mites (tiny animals that eat shed skin flakes), pollen, the debris from insects such as cockroaches, household and animal dander (flakes of skin shed by animals, especially older ones). While keeping the house clean can help alleviate allergic reaction to these allergens, researchers have suggested that allergic asthma and other reactions may also result from excessive cleaning. to any of these household allergens, here are some ways to reduce, and maybe even eliminate allergic reactions, and improve your wellbeing. Some strategies may require you to re-think your interior design choices; others must be followed consistently and regularly to have a lasting and positive effect.

Keep the air clean. Provide good ventilation. Do not allow cigarette smoke in your home, and open windows or use extractor fans and air vents to help keep the air clean. Choose radiant heating, which does not trap dust, and avoid open fires and fan-forced heating. Keep a mould-free house. Check for musty smelling corners or any damp areas that may develop mould. If there are in any part of the house, check for the source of the dampness, like pipes leakages or badly insulated walls from garden soil. Avoid flower beds and other soils touching the walls of the house if they are not properly insulated, as they favour dampness. Treat these areas as soon as possible, as exposure to mould can damage your health seriously. Use low allergen plants near the house. To prevent allergens from blowing in windows and doors, do not plant trees or flowers that release pollen into the air, rye grass, weeds, and other questionable plants close to the house. Also, avoid using pesticides. Instead, welcome natural predators. Choose natural, organic or low-allergen cleaners. Plain white vinegar and baking soda can effectively take care of many cleaning needs such as floors, sinks, and tiles, and leave the house smelling fresh, as well. Avoid strong chemicals, acids or alkalis. Remove all carpeting. Carpets hold dust, no matter how often or well they are vacuumed. Hard surface floors are much easier to keep free of dust and dust-mites. New synthetic carpeting also emit volatile compounds several years after their installation, from plastics and solvents used in the fabric and installation, that can worsen chemical sensitivities.

Treat carpets regularly with tannic acid. If you cannot or prefer not to remove carpeting, vacuum regularly. Regular treatment with tannic acid (the same acid found in black tea) also helps control dust mites.Keep animals outside. Animals may carry allergens in their fur or feathers. Also, people allergic to dust are often allergic to animalsʼ furs as well.Remove dust traps. These include soft furnishings with folds, ruffles or drapery, heavy or pleated drapes, cushions, deep upholstery, knickknacks, books, fireplaces, and venetian blinds. Instead, opt for furniture that is easily wiped, or at least with simple upholstering, and plain, light curtains.Remove sources of volatile compounds. These are chemicals released by plastic and plastic materials, such as furnishings, vinyls and other floor and furniture coverings. They may create chemical sensitivities or aggravate allergies.

Eliminate clutter. A cluttered room contains more dust traps, and is harder to keep clean. Furnish and decorate with a light touch. If possible, have only one bed in a bedroom.

Choose natural or hypoallergenic, unscented cosmetics. Shampoos, body washes, mascara, eye makeup remover and other cosmetics can cause hives, rashes and dermatitis, and other allergic reactions. Choose hypoallergenic and/or organic.

Create a low-fragrance environment. Over 80% of fragrances today are synthetic, and can cause allergic reactions. Fragrance sensitivity is a major contributor to multiple chemical sensitivies (MCS) syndrome, and can be triggered by fragrances in cleaners, varnishes, paints, air fresheners, deodorants, detergents, even dry cleaned clothes, natural oils and perfumes.Use only bedding and curtains that can be washed at 130 degrees F or more. Lower temperatures will not destroy dust mites. Wash all bedding and curtains weekly. Special allergy-proof bedding can be found, but it still requires weekly washing.Encase the mattress and box springs of a sensitive person in an allergen-proof cover. There are nowadays matresses made of sprigs and cotton, designed for the health conscious and chemical sensitive people. In case of strongly reactive allergies and debilitating chemical sensitivities, clean the house thoroughly following these principles: Do an initial complete cleaning to remove allergens that already exist; then repeat the process weekly to maintain your allergy-proof environment.

You will need:Cotton rags Bucket of fresh water for rinsing rags HEPA filter (to trap tiny particles that other vacuums miss)Hypoallergenic or clean cotton mattress and box spring covers

Also recommended:Carpet treatmentLaundry additive (if your water is set below 130 degrees F)Anti-allergen dusting treatmentHEPA filtering machine.

Steps:Clean when the sensitive person is absent, and will not be affected by

disturbed dust or dust-mites. Also, remove any animals from the house. The sensitive person should be kept out for 2 hours after the cleaning is completed, to allow everything to settle.

Clean or replace filters on vacuum and filtering machine. Remove all small items and wash them. After washing, rinse stuffed toys with

anti-allergen product. Strip beds and wash beddings in water heated to at least 130 degrees F.Clean one room at a time.If available, turn the HEPA filtering machine on high in the bedroom of the

sensitive person while you clean it, and leave it on until bedtime.Carefully wipe all surfaces with a damp cloth or oil mop, if possible, moistened

with anti-allergen product. Wipe from top down – walls, door frames, window frames and sills, mirrors,

furniture, then floors. If possible, clean the bed of the sensitive person outside. If not, be sure to

wipe all hard part of the bed, including frame and boxsprings.Vacuum carpeting thoroughly, and apply carpet treatment. In the bedroom of the sensitive person, cover the boxsprings, mattress,

pillows, and any other bedding that cannot be washed with clean, washable, hypo-allergenic or cotton casings.

Leave the HEPA machine on high in the bedroom of the sensitive person until nighttime, for added protection.

Close the door after cleaning each room to prevent spread of allergens from other rooms.Repeat the process once every week.

Stress and Performance

by Marcia Becherel

I'm sure you've heard before that stress is not good for you.

Well, the truth, Yes and No. What? I know it's hard to believe, but sometimes a bit of stress is good for you. Let me show you why. But first, let me give you my definition of stress.

Stress is the inability to adapt to change. In other words, the inability to adapt to a changing environment.

Well, if there is one certainty about life, it is that it is constantly changing. So, stress is bound to happen. There is no way we can escape changing conditions in life. Thus, there is no way that stress will completely disappear from our lives.

On the other hand, a minimum of stress is required to keep us alert and moving forward. This is how we can grow and evolve.

Imagine a life with no stress, no change, everything and everyone is always the same. How would you like that?

Well, you may like that for a little while, but I'm sure that after a while, you would seriously hope for a bit of change, because you would be bored. While we don't like things to change too abruptly, we still enjoy a bit of change from time to time.

Continued on Page 9...........

According to human behavioural studies, most people can tolerate easily small changes in their lives. In general it's about + 10% of the current conditions.

An appropriate amount of stress also creates a healthy tension which helps us in reaching our peak performance.

However, stress becomes toxic is when we reach the fatigue point. Instead of continuing to increase our performance, as we often think it will… instead we reach exhaustion. Our body doesnʼt have the time or the resources necessary to repair or regenerate itself. We soon reach the Tipping Point, where most of our energy stores are depleted and from there on, it is all going downward.

At the Tipping Point where the slightest minimal arousal may precipitate a total breakdown, energetic, physical, mental and spiritual. This is where dis-ease or dis-order appears.

Why is change such a big source of stress?

Well, the truth is when things change in our lives we don't always know what is going to happen to us. There is a degree of uncertainty and with that comes the fear of the unknown and the anxiety.

Since we don't have the full picture of what is going to happen, we often experience fear – False Expectation Appearing Real – that we are going to lose important things and we will end up worse than we currently are. In other words, we anticipate that we are going to experience more bads than goods due to this change.

That is because we focus on what we are going to lose instead of focusing on what we might gain...

There is a Natural Law – The Law of Conservation – which states that nothing is ever lost or gained, but everything transforms.

That means that when we perceive that we lost something, we also have gained something else according to that law. The second point about the perception of loss is that we only perceive a loss for something that we are infatuated with, something that is important to us...

Think about it... Have you ever felt the loss of something that you really disliked, detested, or something that you didn't really care about?

So, here is my tip for you.

Next time you are experiencing change in your life, try this:

List all the possible benefits that this change might bring into your life. You may want to look in all the areas of your life. These include the spiritual area, the mental, the vocational (work/career), the financial, the family/relationship, the social area and the physical one.

For example, you may be heart broken because your boy friend or partner broke up with you and I agree that immediately you may not see any benefits in it. However, if you take a step back and take a look at the bigger picture you may find the other side of the coin. You may find that while in the relationship you stopped doing things that you loved (e.g. going out with your best friend, going to that special class in the gym that you liked, going bushwalking, going window shopping, etc...). You get the picture? You may have sacrificed things that you enjoyed doing before and now that you are single again you start doing these again which brings joy to your life.

By doing this exercise, you will discover benefits that first you didn't see...

As you find more and more benefits, your fear will gradually diminish and you won't dread that change anymore. You'll be able to embrace it more readily and move forward. Because the best thing we can do in life in order to grow and evolve is to have an effective strategy to adapt to constant change and minimise chronic stress...

I trust these tips will certainly help reduce your levels of stress and harmonise your physiology. For extra tips and personalised support to help you tackle chronic stress and the health challenges that life is bringing you, I invite you to contact BGH and organise a session with myself or one of our experienced practitioners.

Did you know that Mung beans are rich of protein, vitamin C, iron, zinc, potassium, phosphorus, thiamine, cooper, manganese, folic acid, high in fibre, low in saturated fat, low in sodium and contain no cholesterol. The wide range of nutrients contained in Mung beans, provide a lot of health benefits for your immune system, heart, metabolism, cell growth, and protection of free radicals and diseases such as diabetes and cancer.

Use of Mung BeansThere are many ways to use Mung beans. You can sprout, cook, or ground them to make flour. In some Asian countries, like in Thailand we make it into a paste, sweeten it, and use it as a filling in pastries or make a cake. And this is what I will share with you today: a healthy delicious Mung Bean cake that is very easy to make in just 3 steps!

Ingredients:❖ 1 1/2 cups yellow Mung beans (you can buy these in most supermarkets or Asian groceries)❖ 250 ml coconut cream or coconut milk❖1/2 cups light brown sugar (or 1/4 cup palm sugar)

Directions:1.In a medium pot, combine beans with 3 cups water and bring to a boil for 15 minutes or until beans

are soft. Drain the water and blend in a blender to puree.2. In a small sauté pan, put in the coconut cream or coconut milk, add sugar, use

medium heat, stir occasionally until the sugar is dissolved (about 2-3 minutes). Add the Mung bean puree into the pan and stir until it forms a paste. (about 10 minutes)

3. Take off the heat and put the Mung bean paste into small cup cake forms or a cake pan in any size/form you want; there are no limits to your creativity. You can eat the cake just like this, but if you want to make it look a bit nicer, I suggest you let the cake cool down a bit before cut it into pieces and serve. Or you can put the cake in the fridge for a while so that it sets quicker before serving. Enjoy!
