BUSY TIMES AHEAD Last week there were many excited children coming through the gates, eager to talk about their holidays - those I chatted with had a fantastic break. I trust parents also had a relaxing and enjoyable time with their children. Most importantly, our students have returned ready to learn and I was delighted to be able to show Mr David Crowe, Director Educational Leadership around our school of Friday. We visited many classrooms and spoke with children from Kindergarten to Year 6. Mr Crowe was highly impressed by what he saw happening in classrooms from reading groups through to programming of robots. In all classes children were actively engaged in learning activities. During our tour, Mr Crowe spoke with individual children about their work and much to our delight, commented both on the quality of the students’ work and their manners. I also note how pleasing it is to see the great majority of children returning to school in correct summer uniform. All students are encouraged to identify with their school and wear correct uniform. It is also very helpful (and could save parents money) if all clothing is clearly labelled so that it may be returned to the owner if found. You may be interested to know that around 40 winter jumpers from the lost property tub were laundered during the holidays but only 10 of these could be returned to the owner. This term, we welcome Mr Austin Burrell to our teaching staff and also welcome back Mrs Gaukroger who is returning part-time from leave. Road safety is everyone’s responsibility and I again take this early opportunity to remind parents of the need to be conscious of every child’s safety particularly when dropping off in the morning and collecting in the afternoon. Albert Street becomes very busy during these peak times and each morning we witness children being directed across the road through the bus zone and/or cars pulling into the bus zone. Please model appropriate road safety strategies by parking and walking children across the designated pedestrian crossings. A busy calendar of Term 4 events include the K-6 presentation evening, a twilight concert, discos, Year 6 farewell and much more! There is a calendar at the end of each newsletter and I encourage all parents to look at it and plan ahead so that you don’t miss out. The daily school news segment at approximately 7.10am on 2VM also provides a useful update/reminder. Neutral Bay Public School is visiting MPS this week as part of our involvement with the City Country Alliance (CCA). Last night we were excited to welcome 30 students and their teachers from our partner school. The CCA seeks to develop intercultural understandings and our visiting city friends will be able to compare and contrast city/country life; learn about local Aboriginal culture and also about farming. Students will spend time in classrooms and enjoy activities in our school and also visit cultural sites and a local mixed farming property – a busy three days for our Neutral Bay frineds but without their usual busy traffic! The senior student leadership team is one of many programs that aims to promote being an active member in the school and our community. In fact, right from kindergarten, students are guided in the development of skills such as leadership, communication and decision making, thereby helping to build a foundation for active and positive citizenship for our students. Students in Year 5 will soon have the opportunity to nominate for election to one of eight senior student leadership positions – two captains, two vice captains and four prefects. The election process is formal and based on democratic principles. Candidates are asked to prepare and deliver a brief speech of introduction, outlining their leadership qualities, at the primary assemblies. As with any election process there is bound to be some disappointment when there is only a small number of positions available. While not every student will get elected just by nominating themselves, students show that they are willing to learn and grow. Parents of Year 5 children are encouraged to talk with their child about nominating for a school leadership position. Tuesday, 22 nd October 2018

The PSSA state athletics carnival will be an exciting event this year! Good luck to Charlie Grant, Darcy Brazel, Harriet Beattie, Mitchell Beddoes, Jeremy Blatchford, Mana Noble and Chaz Noble who are all representing Moree Public School at the NSW PSSA athletics carnival at Homebush next week. Being selected to participate against the best from all over NSW is a wonderful achievement and Homebush provides a wonderful opportunity and I know the MPS students will be trying the very best. Head Start into Kindergarten for student enrolling in Kindergarten in 2019 will commence soon. The Head Start Program includes two parts:

• a family orientation morning be held on Tuesday 6th November commencing at 10:00 am. All families who have a child enrolling in Kindergarten 2019 are encouraged to attend. The morning will begin in the hall with a Kindergarten item, introductions and a brief welcome. Parents will be taken on a tour of MPS and will culminate with a parent staff morning tea at 11:00am; and

• preschool visits to kindergarten classrooms for two morning sessions. Children will then visit the school with their pre-school group to meet teachers and participate in classroom activities.

Parents are advised that if you have not already submitted an enrolment form, please do so as quickly as possible. It is important that we have accurate information to plan classes for the beginning of the year. Children must turn five years of age by 31st July 2019 to be eligible to start school in 2019. Treatment lotions and combs are available at all pharmacies. A limited supply is available by request from school. Please contact Mrs Hosegood through the school office should you require this assistance. Thank you for your diligence in checking and treating hair and help minimise the issue for everyone.

On the 17th of September, a number of students travelled to Gunnedah for the annual Year 3 excursion at Lake Keepit Sport & Recreational Centre. From hitting bulls-eyes in archery to reaching new heights when rock climbing - we had a blast! Although the dam water levels were low, the fun and excitement were high as the group also enjoyed other heart racing activities including orienteering, canoeing, low ropes obstacle courses and night games.

A big thankyou to Mr Brown, Mr Pirie, Miss Quirk, Mr French and parent helper, Mrs Humphries for assistance throughout the excursion. Their hard work and generosity supported the success of this memorable experience. I also extend a thank you to the students of year 3 for representing their school and community in a responsible and respectful fashion. Mr Burgess

Community Art Project Throughout Term 3, a number of students from MPS worked together completed an artwork during their lunchtimes. The goal was to produce a work that could be used in an initiative of the Downer Group to cover the new NBN nodes around Moree with local designs. Towards the end of last term, some of the students who had contributed had the privilege of seeing their artwork made into large ‘stickers’ and then meticulously placed onto the node in Edward St (near the Heber intersection). It was very exciting to watch each piece go up and see it improve the streetscape. Not all the students who worked on the composition were able to attend the unveiling as they were on their excursion. Congratulations to: Kyla Roberts, Lorraine Townsend, Diaz Craigie, Daisy Timmins-Bartlett, Aydan McGuire, Emily Maher & Declan Yeatman, you did a wonderful job!

The original piece of art will be framed and positioned proudly so that we can enjoy it at school as well as on the street.
