Dear CCD Pastors, Youth Pastors and NYI Presidents, As the calendar turns and we begin preparing for the spring semester in the life of the Chicago Central District NYI, your District NYI Council would like to bring your attention to an upcoming transition for one of the regular events — District Celebrate Life. District Celebrate Life has typically been structured as a day-long event on the first Saturday of Olivet Nazarene University’s spring break. We recognize that for some that has meant waking up extra early on a Saturday to drive a couple hours for the event. Many of these events do not require a full day of participation in order to qualify for the regional event. In order to justify the cost and time commitment for churches and youth groups, the event needs to be high-quality and engaging for every student involved. - This includes men’s and women’s basketball (including free throw and hot shot), men’s and women’s volleyball, co-ed soccer, table tennis, chess, and bowling. The only cost for this event will be for lunch provided afterward at a location TBD, provided there is interest.

2. All talent (visual and performing arts) entries and non-tryout registrations will be entered and judged during our District NYI Convention on Saturday, March 25th at Trinity Church of the Nazarene in Naperville.

- Art entries will be dropped off at the church by 8:30a to be judged while the group serves at Feed My Starving Children. This includes still photography, painting, drawing, sculpture/craft, creative writing, and video production. When we return, all art entry evaluations will be ready for pickup. As per usual, all entries which score an Excellent or Superior will be eligible for entry at the regional Celebrate Life event in May.

- Registration for the 5K, dodgeball team, golf team, tennis, science quizzing, and HR derby will take place during lunch. These events require no tryout and all who sign up will be added to the regional roster.

- During the afternoon, we will have a lip sync battle complete with great prizes for the winners! During the lip sync battle, vocal and instrumental entries (solo, duet, trio, ensemble, choir), Bible exposition, speech, mime, drama, puppetry, dance, and rap entries will be performed and evaluated at assigned time slots.

- The chess and table tennis tournaments will also take place during the lip sync battle.

- At the end of the NYI Convention day, everyone who will be representing CCD NYI at Celebrate Life in May will be recognized!

We’re confident that these changes will allow us to make the most of our NYI Convention gathering and a better overall district event for all participants. More information regarding the specific details of the NYI Convention day will be coming in the near future. We look forward to seeing you and your students on those Saturdays in March!

� CELEBRATE LIFE 2017 INFO SHEET

Overview Celebrate Life is a multi-day event which takes place each May at Olivet Nazarene University and which is designed to encourage the development and abilities of the Central Field NYI in the name of Jesus. Each year, thousands of students from all over the Central Field converge on ONU’s campus to worship and fellowship together and to celebrate the gifts and talents God has given to them. It’s a wonderful weekend of Christian community and a great opportunity for students to experience what ONU has to offer!

Anyone can attend the regional event as a spectator. However, only those who have qualified at the district level by being selected for a team event or receiving a qualifying talent entry evaluation will be able to participate in those events at the regional level. The process for selecting the teams and evaluating all talent entries takes place across two dates which are outlined below. Both our team coaches and talent judges are encouraging and affirming and aim to provide constructive feedback for each participant.

Students may enter as many events as desired with two limitations: 1) No individual category may be entered more than once (e.g., a student cannot submit two

paintings) 2) A student may only participate in a single team sport.

Registration Registration forms can be found on the CCD NYI Facebook page. All registration forms must be turned in no later than Sunday, February 26th. Sponsors need not fill out forms for these events but will be required to fill out registration forms and background checks for the regional event in May. MUSICAL ARTS

GENERAL RULES Ø Participants must be in the 7th-12thgrade by the time of Celebrate

Life in May. Participants are to be judged according to age (Early Youth 7th - 8th grade; Senior Youth 9th - 12th grade). Memory recall is required for vocal entries only. Instrumental entries, including keyboard, may use music. The judges shall be given an original copy of the material being performed. The judge(s) will add a bonus of 3 points for memory recall in the Instrumental categories only.

Ø The use of music for vocal entries will receive a 4-point deduction. Ø All entries are to be between 2 and 6 minutes long. Ø All entries are to be of a religious nature with the exception of instrumental entries. Classical music is

permitted. Ø An original copy of the music must be given to the judge. Lyric sheets are not sufficient. Ø Use only the sound system that is provided. Ø The participant will be judged according to the printed music. Ø Copyright laws must be observed on both printed and recorded music. Ø Vocal and instrumental ensembles, choirs and bands will be judged according to the age group of the

oldest participant. Ø Those entries receiving “Excellent” or “Superior” rating will advance to the next level of competition

(district/field).

ACCOMPANIMENT Ø Participants may be assisted by live accompaniment, no accompaniment or by cassette tape/CD

accompaniment. All commercially produced accompaniment tapes/CDs must be an original tape/CD. No copies are permitted.

Ø Music must be provided for the judges. Lyric sheets are not sufficient. The use of lyric sheets only for judges shall result in a 2 point deduction.

Ø The taped/CD accompaniment must not have voices singing the same words and notes simultaneously with the singer(s). The participant will be judged according to the printed music at any time.

Ø Copyright laws must be observed on both printed music and /CDd music!

VIDEO PRODUCTION PURPOSE: • To use technology to produce audio and video files stored in a digital format for playback. Projects must

demonstrate the use of digital video production techniques. QUALIFICATION: • Participants must be in the 7th-12th grade by the time of Celebrate Life in May. Each District President is

responsible for who may/may not participate from their district. • There is a limit of one video project per participant. Each participant may or may not choose to have an

assistant. There is no limit to the number of participants per district. • All entries must receive at least an “excellent” rating at the district level. Any work not judged in the

district competition is ineligible for Celebrate Life. GENERAL RULES: • Each project must be submitted on a DVD. • All entries must be created using video and computer technology. • Students may use any software to create their project. • Each project must consist of at least three different shots, edited into a cohesive scene, meaning that the

shots should not be random. They should be related in some way to form scene. Scenes may be in any style, for example, dramatic, comedic, documentary, commercial, interview, nature/animals, avant-garde, etc.

• All projects should include an appropriate player. • Scenes depicting inappropriate language, sexual innuendo or violence will be disqualified. As a general

rule, scenes should be within the boundaries of a G motion picture rating. • Scenes containing illegal content are unacceptable and will be disqualified. • All videos should fall between 1-7 minutes (depending on the category chosen; details below). Under or

over the time limit shall be marked on their critique sheet. • Each project will be judged on: script (organization, effectiveness, content, coverage of topic, labeled),

video/audio/lighting (camera steadiness, quality, originality, flow, creativity, audio, lighting), production (technical transitions, animation, graphics, correct length, proper citation, good use of varying sound effects).

• All entries must have the participant’s name, district’s name and title of the project hand written or on a printed label and affixed to the project.

COPYRIGHT REQUIREMENTS: (Violation of any of the following will result in disqualification.) • Entries must adhere to all applicable copyright laws. • No commercially created clip art will be allowed in Digital Graphics. • Trademarks or copyrighted logos require documented permission.

• You must have the legal right to use all performances included in your submission. This includes music, sound effects and performances by actors. Do not drop your favorite track from “Lord of the Rings” in your scene. Use royalty-free, public domain or original music.

• Fair use guidelines must be followed. • All graphic files or other content belonging to other sources must be properly documented. CATEGORIES (for individual video): The following are types of video projects that can be submitted. Participants may only enter one category. • Commercial (1 minute or less) – persuade the intended audience; advertise a non-existing product. • PSA-Public Service Announcement (1 minute or less) – video is intended to inform the audience. • News Story (3 minute max.) – new feature. • Documentary/Instructional (7 minute maximum) – facts based on information; historical events,

biographies, tutorials. • Abstract/Experimental (7 minute maximum) – original works; entertainment feature; non-narrative film;

Ø All photography is to be original. It should be interesting, holding the attention of the viewer.

Ø All entries must have received at least an “excellent” rating at the district level. Any work not judged in district competition is ineligible for Celebrate Life.

Ø While the entry does not have to show a religious subject or object, it should show the work of God through beauty, expression or creativity.

Ø A statement explaining God’s involvement in the project must accompany each entry, but this is not to be used for judging purposes.

Ø A typed or neatly written note card must accompany each entry, stating the participant’s name, address and district.

Ø Composition, the placement of all objects, and the use of positive and negative space is critical. The photo will be judged on exposure, if it is too light or too dark, and in focus. Each selection should have a focal point. The main subject should be in focus, drawing the viewer’s attention.

Ø All entries should be at least a 5x7, including the mat and frame. Larger prints are more acceptable.

Ø All entries must be matted and framed. There should be no writing on the photo or mat. All photo dates should be cropped off the print.

Ø There is a limit of one photographic entry per participant. There is no limit to the number of participants per district.

However, the use of cross stitching patterns are permitted. Ø All entries must have received at least an “excellent” rating on the district level. Any

work not judged in district competition is ineligible for Celebrate Life. Ø While the entry does not have to show a religious subject or object, it should have

some relevance to religion through blending spiritual feeling with beauty, expression or color to depict peace, Christian love or harmony, etc.

Ø A statement explaining God’s involvement in the project must accompany each entry, but this is not to be used for judging purposes.

Ø A typed or neatly written note card must accompany each entry stating the participant’s name, address, district and age.

Ø No kits or models allowed! Ø There is no size limitation, but there is a limit of three pieces per artist, with only

one piece accepted per category for an individual participant. There is no limit to the number of participants per district.

TWO DIMENSIONAL: ü Drawing in charcoal, pencil or pastel must be fixative sprayed or sealed under

acetate (or glass). ü All 2-dimensional artwork (paintings. drawings, prints and photographs) must be

ready for hanging. You may use wire or cloth hangers.

COMMUNICATIONS

BIBLE EXPOSITION:

v Participants must be in the 7th-12thgrade by the time of Celebrate Life in May. Each District President is responsible for who may/may not participate from their district.

v The Bible Exposition category shall be an ORIGINAL sermonic message or speech no longer than 10 minutes or shorter than 5 minutes in length and based upon a Scripture passage. The sermonic points must arise from and explain the significant meaning of the passage itself, not a topical message.

v In Bible Exposition, sermonic helps may be referred to in preparation, but credit must be footnoted.

v Outlines of sermons in Bible Exposition must be typed with 1 ½” margins. v In Bible Exposition, only one entry per person allowed. v Bible Exposition category shall be open to any number of participants from the

district.

OTHER CATEGORIES: q Communications is defined as individual or group presentation on a religious topic

or scripture. q All speeches must be an original work. q Time allotment for 3 Speech, Puppetry and Drama entries is between 3-10

minutes. q Ratings will be based on communication skills, content, facial expression, poise,

gestures and appearance or costume. q Speech, Puppetry and Drama participants must present their materials to the judge

before presenting their entry. q Creative Writing entries must be presented in a typed format in order to avoid a

penalty. Creative Writing includes the areas of short stories, prose and poetry. All entries should be presented in a folder. DO NOT FRAME. There is a 10-page limit.

q In Communications, a person may enter only once in each category, as in Speech, Puppetry, Drama, Mime, and Creative Writing.

q Groups of four or more will be given one award for their level of performance RATING:

v Participants will be rated by a Superior, Excellent, Good or Fair rating system, with Superior being the best possible. This is combined with the other areas of Arts.

SCIENCE QUIZZING AGE: Participants must be in the 7th - 12th grade by the time of Celebrate Life in May. Each District President is responsible for who may/may not participate from their district.

1. TEAMS: • Teams must be formed at the District level. An “intent to participate” form must be submitted to your

district president by April 1. The district president is then to follow the registration process as outlined on page 2 of this handbook. All forms and fees must be postmarked no later than April 15th.. This should include the district name, coach’s name, address, and phone number (person over 18 years old), all team members who will be present at the Celebrate Life competition and their addresses, grade and church. Districts with uncompleted forms will not be allowed to participate under any circumstances.

• Each team must be accompanied by an adult coach. • Each team must have a designated captain (spokes person) who will sit in the center chair. • Each competing team must have a minimum of 3 members and a maximum of 5 members plus two

alternates. • The alternate team members may be substituted into the competition once per match. If a team

begins with less than five members, they can still only substitute twice into vacant positions. • Teams should be present at least 10 minutes before any match. It is each team’s responsibility to

make sure that they are present on-time. Forfeits will be given to teams who arrive more than 5 minutes beyond the designated time or who do not show.

• Teams that supply one person to help with the competition will be awarded 10 points at each game. These individuals will be used to prevent entry into the room during questions.

• Persons (fans) will not be able to enter or exit rooms during the questions. Persons may enter the room between questions.

2. OFFICIALS: The following is a list of officials necessary for play: • Quiz Master – Presides over competition; reads questions and awards points to correct answers and

errors. • Strike/Time Judge – Determines first strike, controls timers for answers, and timeouts; keeps the

score.

Science Quizzing began in 1989 as a way to get Junior and Senior High students involved and excited about science, math and engineering. Several academic departments of Olivet Nazarene University developed Science Quizzing so that more students could be involved in the Celebrate Life competition and so that individuals could become better exposed to the science. In 2004, E2i Automation became the corporate sponsor for the competition. E2i is an engineering company that specializes in programming and engineering for manufacturers. This year, E2i has generously provided resources to write an additional 200 questions and to develop updated strike systems for the competition.

3. QUESTION CONTENT: Each match will consist of 20 questions. There will be 4 questions taken from each of the five areas listed below. The order of these sets of 4 questions will be as follows:

• Physics/Engineering – vectors, force, work, electricity, magnetism • Earth and Space – geology, astronomy • Biology – zoology, genetics, environment • Chemistry – molar calculation, identify type of element given molecular weights, oxidation

numbers, orbital information, acids/bases • Math/Computer – algebra, trigonometry, geometry, number system, conversions, probability,

programming concepts Most question sets will have one Scientist/Inventor question. This question will generally ask who discovered, who invented, etc. This person can be from any of the four areas provided above. 4. THE PLAY:

• The questions for each game will be asked by the Quiz Master. An example of this is as follows: “Question #1 (pause) Question: ‘What was the first Apollo mission to orbit the moon?’ “

• Once a question has been completed by the Quiz Master, the teams will be given a maximum of 5 seconds to respond.

• The first team to respond must answer the question completely within 15 seconds. The correct answer will be worth 20 points.

• If the first team is incorrect, the second team will be given an opportunity to respond. The question will be completed (if necessary) and then subsequent teams must completely answer within 10 seconds. This correct response will be worth 10 points.

• If a team gives two answers to any question, only the first answer will be considered by the Quiz Master.

• After 5 incorrect responses from any team, 10 points per error will be deducted. • During questions 16-20, 10 points per error will be deducted for each incorrect response. • A team will not receive a penalty of more than 10 points for any single question. • If a response from a team occurs before the question is completed, the team does not need to

finish the question. If the first team to respond answers incorrectly, the question will be completed for the subsequent team. Only the portion of the question unread will be completed.

• Questions will not be repeated. • On multiple choice questions, a team captain is only required to give the correct “letter choice,” for

example, (a), (b), (c), or (d). If the captain responds with both the letter choice and the expression, the expression will be considered the teams’ answer to the question. If a team responds before all choices are given, it can choose a “letter choice” that has not been given and still receive the full amount of points.

• Tie breakers consist of 1 question from any topic and will be sudden death. The question will follow the same format as questions 16-20. (Penalties will apply to the breakers.)

• Answers that contain any incorrect information will be considered “incorrect”. • No scratch paper, pencils or calculators are allowed in the competition.

Teams are encourage to purchase a series of books entitled “Physics: The Easy Way”, “Chemistry: The Easy Way,” etc. The quizzers shoud be aware that these books only serve as one source of information.

• The Tournament format will be a reduced round robin round-followed by a single elimination bracket.

• During the reduced round robin round, each team will play in two matches against a randomly chosen opponent team.

• The two matches count for points only. Each team should try to earn as many points in the two matches as possible, since the total points will determine placement in the single elimination bracket.

• Only the top eight teams will be entered into a single elimination bracket. Teams will be seeded based upon total scores in the reduced round robin with the 1st place team pitted against the 8th place team, 2nd place team against the 7th place team, etc.

• If there is a total score tie between any of the top eight teams, seeding in the single elimination bracket will be determine by number of wins in the round robins (e.g. a team winning both of their games in the round robin will be seeded better than a team that won one or none of their games.) If the number of wins is also tied, seeding will be chosen randomly.

• Matches will be sequenced every 30 minutes. • Each district will garner grand trophy points with the 1st place district receiving the most and the

11th place district receiving the least. 6. CORRECTNESS OF ANSWERS, JUDGING, CHALLENGING:

• The Quiz Master asking the questions will decide whether the response is valid. The decision of the Quiz Master is final. If the question has incorrect information in it, it will be thrown out and another will be substituted.

• Only a captain may argue a question’s validity. In any case, the Quiz Master’s decision is final. • Answers to all questions will be accepted only from the captain of the team. Other responses will

be ignored. 7. FOULS:

• Team members are allowed to talk to each other anytime after a team has responded by striking the button. However, excessive noise or talking from any team or fans during the other team’s turn will result in a deduction of 10 points per violation.

• A 10-point penalty will be given to any team who strikes the buzzer after, “Question Number #” but before, “Question,”

8. TIME OUTS: • Each team will have a 1 minute time out per match. Time outs will only be granted between

questions. 9. REGISTRATION & AWARDS:

• The registration form and entrance fee should be sent to your district president by April 1. The district president is then to follow the registration process as outlined on page 2 of this handbook. All completed forms and fees must be postmarked no later than April 16th.

• Each district will garner grand trophy points with the 1st place district receiving the most and the 11th place district receiving the least.
