Program Details

PROGRAM MISSION:

Workshops offered through “For North Plainfield, By North Plainfield” are developed and coordinated to address the professional development needs of district staff while simultaneously cultivating teacher leadership and in-district turnkey efforts. The program focus and workshop offerings are in line with department and district professional development objectives and collaboration goals.

The catalog is open to revision, allowing additional workshops to be added, and courses to be modified throughout the school year. If you are interested in providing teacher training or would like to suggest/request specific program offerings, please contact [email protected].

CONTINUING EDUCATION HOURS:

As with all district-provided professional development programs, these workshops are aligned with the NJ Standards for Required Professional Development for Teachers.

All teachers are expected tocomplete 20 hours of state-approved continuingeducation each year. For North Plainfield, By North Plainfield workshops have been designedto assist teachers in meeting that requirement ina district-focused, convenient and cost-efficient manner. The number of continuing education hours assigned to each program is noted in each individual course description.

Registration & PD Credit

Earning professional development hours associated with participating in any of these courses requires that participants have registered for the course through My Learning Plan and that the instructor/facilitator has confirmed individual attendance upon completion of the training program. Teachers are expected to attend all sessions included in any multi-session programs in order to be awarded the hours indicated. Partial participation in multi-session courses must be arranged and approved directly with the noted instructor/facilitator.

REGISTRATION:Participation in program offerings is open to all district staff with registration processed directly through district catalog within the Professional Growth module.

All workshops offered as part of this district catalog are filled on a first-come, first-served basis as interested participants complete registration. Please note classes are subject to cancellation if enrollment is low.

CANCELLATION POLICY:

Registered staff members are expected to attend all sessions. If you have registered and are unable to attend, please notify the course facilitator, ASAP and prior to the first day of the program. This will allow admittance to anyone on a waiting list and ensure that minimum enrollment is maintained.

Course: Trauma-Informed Classrooms: You Don’t Know What You Don’t Know”

An English Language Arts Example

Description: During these sessions, participants will learn the basics of developmental trauma and consider how to amend their own policies and procedures to enable all students to learn. Sessions will include information on emotional regulation and resources to consult to learn more.

8Course Title: Heartsaver® CPR AED Description: This is a video-based, instructor-led course that teaches adult and child CPR and AED use, infant CPR, and how to relieve choking in adults, children, and infants. This course teaches skills with the AHA’s research-proven practice-while-watching technique, which allows instructors to observe the students, provide feedback, and guide the students’ learning of skills.

The course is updated with the new science from the 2015 AHA Guidelines Update for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care. This course is for anyone with limited or no medical training who needs a course completion card in CPR and AED use to meet job, regulatory, or other requirements

Focus on Life Skills

Course Title: Heartsaver® First AidDescription: This is a video-based, instructor-led course that teaches students critical skills to respond to and manage an emergency in the first few minutes until emergency medical services arrives. Students learn duties and responsibilities of first aid rescuers; first aid actions for medical emergencies, including severe choking, heart attack, and stroke; and skills for handling injury and environmental emergencies, including external bleeding, broken bones and sprains, and bites and stings. Students also learn how to use the epinephrine auto injector.

The course is updated with the new science from the 2015 AHA Guidelines Update for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care. Course Title: Teaching Elementary Social Studies through Document Based Questions

Description: ● Participants will review best practices

when engaging students in primary and secondary source documents through a document based question

Description: In this session, Costa’s Levels of thinking and questioning will be explored. Designing an asking questions at all levels of the taxonomy, invites students to think about their thinking. When students learn to ask questions of themselves and one another, they own their learning.

Description: This session will serve as a review of the PARCC administration. Please note that this PD is being offered in addition to the training that will be provided at a building level meeting. This session will provide staff members with additional hands-on practice using the Pearson site, as well as provide an opportunity to have questions answered before PARCC testing begins.

Course Title: Using the MAP Class Report to Lesson Plan

Description: This PD session will provide an in-depth analysis of the Class Report and guide teachers in using the data to plan lessons, differentiate instruction, and make flexible groups. Teachers will have the opportunity to use their own Class Report data from their students during this session, as well.

Course Title: Introduction to NWEA MAP Assessment Data

Description: These PD sessions will provide an introduction to NWEA MAP assessment data and basic features of the system. Items to be covered will include a discussion of what a RIT score is, what it means regarding student performance, and where the score comes from. In addition, the workshops will also provide guidance on running and utilizing the report data generated from MAP to inform instruction and assessments.
