• The Department of Statistics was established in
1972 under the provisions of the Statistics -
Central Statistic Office.
• In 1978, under the provisions of Ministry of
planning.
• In 1990 , name is change to ministry of statistics
• In 1994 , independent organization Central
Statistics Organization.
BACKGROUND

• Department of Statistics, Afghanistan (DOSA), the main government agency entrusted with the responsibility to collect, interpret and disseminate statistics.
• A centralised system, with DOSA as central agency, while other agencies provide statistics specific to their needs.
• Special and heavy demand placed on the system to provide timely and current information to monitor economic performance as well as social development of the country.

• The Department of Statistics, Afghanistan is placed under President of Afghanistan Government.
• The Chief Statistician is the head of the national statistical service.
