The CORE

Extended Essay

The Extended Essay is a substantial piece of writing

of up to 4,000 words, enabling students to investigate a topic of

special interest that they have chosen themselves.

It also encourages them to develop the skills of

independent research that will be expected at

university.

Theory Of Knowledge

The Theory of Knowledge course encourages

students to think about the nature of knowledge, to reflect on the process

of learning in all the subjects they study as part of their Diploma

Programme and to make connections across them.

CAS

Creativity, activity, service (CAS) involves students in experiential

learning through a range of artistic, sporting,

physical and service activities.

To fulfill the requirements of the IBDP students must

study at least six subjects, one subject must be selected from

each of the subject groups one to six*.

Three must be taken at HL and three at SL.

Students not wishing to be enrolled in the full Diploma Programme may choose to take only particular IBDP

subject courses offered.

For example, a student could study 2 HL subjects, 3 SL subjects and undertake an extended essay. Students who study Diploma Programme courses without covering the

requirements of the full Diploma will be awarded “Individual Subject Certificates.”

Super selective and highly selective universities in the USA and UK require the most challenging subject combinations

Specific subject combinations at IB level for specific degree programmes in highly popular specialisms

Year 11 Guidance

• HL Mathematics and often HL Economics are required if you wish to study Economics in the most selective UK universities, e.g. LSE, UCL, Bath

• HL Mathematics and HL Physics are required for most engineering programmes [everywhere]

• HL Chemistry and HL Biology along with HL Mathematics [if possible] for medicine – SL Mathematics also possible depending on university

• WHAT IF YOU REALLY DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU WANT TO DO???

• Strongly advise you to select a HL subject in multiple disciplines:

– Literature or Languages– Science or Maths– Additional Humanities
