Beach Rescue

On Sunday, three friends and I went to the beach. Thank goodness I am still living to tell what happened there.

The beach sand was great for digging. I began to dig a hole, just because I could. Thoughtlessly, I dug deeper and deeper. I was kneeling in the hole with my head below its rim. That’s when the sand caved in. It buried me! Crushed under its weight, I could not move, breathe, or scream.

Luckily, my friends scrambled to dig out my head. After many fearful seconds, I was able to breathe. What a relief! They tried but failed to dig out the rest of me. I was stuck there helplessly. My friends called for aid.

When the rescue squad came, they had to use a backhoe to dig me out. I will be thankful to them for the rest of my life. And here is the lesson of this tale: Never dig yourself into a hole on the beach!

Cave Paintings

In Spain in 1879, a young girl was playing outside when she came upon a cave. She climbed into the opening. Inside, she found strange sights. The rock walls were filled with paintings. Most of the paintings showed animals, but there were also humans. On the ceiling were colorful animals that looked like bulls. The paintings were skillfully done. They had such freshness that they seemed to have just been painted. The girl showed the cave to her father. He suspected that the paintings were not recent. He believed they might have been made by people of the Stone Age. The bull-like animals were really bison, which no longer lived in Spain.

When news of the cave paintings spread, people did not believe that such beautiful work could have been produced in the Stone Age. Finally, years later, it was accepted that these works were extremely old. The newest ones were painted at least 13 thousand years before they were found again!

Beetles

When you see an insect, you may not be sure of what kind it is. But chances are good that the insect is a beetle. The reason is that nearly 40 percent of all insects are beetles. More than 350 thousand species of beetles have been found so far. Beetles live in the coldest, hottest, wettest, and driest places on earth—and in all places in between.

A beetle’s front wings make it different from other insects. These special wings cover the body and the back wings when the insect is not flying. One very common beetle is the weevil. There are more than 40 thousand kinds of weevils. Weevils are called pests because they feed on plants that people grow. The boll weevil, for example, feeds on cotton plants. Leaf beetles, too, eat crops. Ladybugs, in contrast, are beetles that eat insect pests. Other common beetles are ground beetles, June beetles, diving beetles, and fireflies. What beetles have you seen lately?

The Biggest Beetles

With hundreds of thousands of beetle species worldwide, you might expect beetles to come in different sizes. They do! The world’s tiniest beetle could be mistaken for the dot over an i. And the biggest ones would fill a human hand.

The titan beetle is one of the world’s biggest insects. This gigantic beetle lives in the Amazon rain forest. It may grow to be more than six inches long. A titan beetle can bite fiercely to defend itself.

Another giant is the goliath beetle. Several species of goliath beetles live in Africa. About four inches long, goliaths are not the longest beetles, but all other beetles are lighter in weight. Their great weight and size may make goliaths the biggest beetles in the world. Goliath beetles also stand out because of their black stripes and other body designs.

A rhinoceros beetle may be six inches long, including the horn-like shape on the male’s head. Rhinoceros beetles are found throughout the world and are noted for being extremely strong.
