Richard BriggsRisk Management, Canadian National RailwayRichard Briggs has been a railroader since 2007. During his ten years with CN he has worked as a Rail Traffic Controller, Manager of Corridor Operations and Risk Management Officer. Twice he has been recognized with a President’s Award for Excellence. He currently provides safety advice and incident re-

sponse for the Alberta region.

Lana BurnstadSenior HR Consultant, The Canadian Heartland Training Railway ServicesLana has over 20 years of HR management experience. Prior to joining CN’s Management Development Program, she wrote her Masters thesis and examined the impact of supportive work environments on railway employees’ engagement and retention. She later worked for RailLink / RailAmerica and

led the Human Resources functions for the 8 shortline and regional railway companies across Canada. Since 2006 Lana has worked in various HR and Health and Safety roles in the electricity and water utility sector. Lana has been involved with the Canadian Heartland Training Railway since its inception. She is a certified mediator and a group / organizational coach and is currently developing a mentorship training program, as part of an Aboriginal youth hiring initiative.

Stacey CowieNDT/Rail Inspection Services, Ultra-TraxxStacey Cowie is an owner/operator with Ultra-Traxx Inc for the past few years and has worked in the inspection and the Non-Destructive (Non-Destructive Evaluation - NDE) testing field since 1994. Prior to Ultra-Traxx Inc. and performing NDE and visual inspection of pressure vessels, storage

tanks, and pipelines, Stacey has operated his own company since 2006. Most of his time and experience has been in the oil and gas sector including Upstream to Downstream and other industries, such as Pulp and Paper, Chemical, Power Generation, and Nuclear Power Generation. Stacey Cowie is very proud of his career in the inspection and non-destructive industry, and looks forward to applying his knowledge and experiences in the future for the rail industry.

Wes DainardGeneral Manager, Transloading Services, WayfinderWes has been employed in the Alberta Oil & Gas industry for over 40 years. After spending 9 years in the drilling industry Wes attended NAIT and earned a diploma in Petroleum Exploration Technology in 1988. He has been a Hydraulic Fracturing specialist ever since, having been employed by Halliburton Energy

Services, Sanjel Corp., and EnCana Corporation. He joined Wayfinder Corp., in June of 2015 and is currently managing a rail-to-truck transloading operation at Dalehurst (aka – Obed Mountain). He is also focused on supporting Wayfinder with the planning and construction of their proppant coating and related rail infrastructure.

Scott DerbyshireSenior Operations Manager – Plant & Terminal Operations, SGS CanadaSGS’ Plant and Terminal Operations (PTO) provide complete, outsourced solutions for the safe handling of petroleum, chemical and other hazardous products for organizations spanning the refining, chemical and marine

industries. Solutions include rail loading, unloading, switching and terminal operations support. As Senior Operations Manager for SGS Plant & Terminal Operations group, Scott has responsibilities for Rail & Marine operations at various manufacturing, refining and distribution sites across Canada. Prior to SGS, Scott was Supply Chain Logistics & Railcar Manager with Dow Chemical Canada.

Ryan HuselGeneral Manager, Transloading Services, Standard GeneralWorking in the railway industry has been a family legacy for Ryan. His father worked with CN Rail, shortline railroads and industrial railroads. Ryan would get a degree in construction management from Florida International University in Miami which helped him begin his railway career working for

CN as a conductor for a little over a year. Even though Ryan was considered young for a conductor job, he approached it with enthusiasm and was soon assigned to be an on the job trainer. Ryan gained further experience managing a transload facility in Conklin Alberta, working for Standard General. His responsibility included overseeing day-to-day operations, both unloading railcars and loading trucks with aggregate. He worked closely

with management assisting in the creation of Standard Generals SMS and their Rail Training Program. It wasn’t long before Standard General promoted Ryan to Rail Logistics Manager in January 2015 where Rail Safety Program. In 2016, Ryan began exploring the use of drone technology and is managing a drone program for Standard General operations to complete stockpile surveys.

Kevin McKinnonRailway Association of CanadaKevin McKinnon is an Ambassador to the railway industry with extensive theoretical and hands-on progressive experience [ 38 years] in operating practices , safety, technology, regulatory processes and risk management. Kevin is the President of K. G. McKinnon Railway Consulting. His background

includes Director of Regulatory Affairs with the Railway Association of Canada [2006-2015] and Regional Manager of Safety and Operating Practices with Rail America-Eastern Canada [1998-2006]. In addition, Kevin worked for Canadian Pacific Railway (1977-2005) in a variety of management and supervisory positions.

Heather MacmahonManager, Industrial Development, Canadian Pacific RailwayHeather Macmahon started her rail career at Canadian Pacific in 2004 and during that time has held a variety of roles across the business, including Interline Management and Service Design. In her current role, as Manager of Industrial Development she has been involved in developing greenfield customer sites as well as numerous facility expansions throughout western Canada. Heather recently completed one of her largest projects to date, the construction of CP’s Belle Plaine Subdivision to service a new potash

mine in Saskatchewan. Heather continues to find her role in Industrial Development challenging and rewarding as it relates to progressing complex initiatives and at the same time strengthening her relationship with CP’s customers and other railway industry professionals.

Knut OhmRail Safety Officer, AB Transportation, Government of AlbertaKnut has been a Rail Safety Officer with Alberta Transportation for over 12 years. In this capacity he has worked with industry to develop the current Alberta railway safety management system and audit protocols. Before this, Knut had a lengthy career in aviation that spanned 28 years in a project

manager role and then in aviation safety including flight and ground safety, environment, security and dangerous goods.

Phil PartridgeSuperintendent Mechanical Car, Northern Plains Rail CompaniesPhil’s career spans nearly 40 years in the rail business, and it all began for him as a young labourer working for Canadian Pacific Railway in Canada’s prairie region. Over the years he had key projects in mechanical services (LEAN, DME railway mechanical operations, Diesel Service, Mechanical

Wrecking derailment response, etc), plus progressively responsible roles managing in areas of Locomotive Servicing, Locomotive Maintenance, Train Servicing, Car Repair and Safety Programs. Today, Phil has dual citizenship in both Canada and the United States and currently resides in Grand Forks, North Dakota. In his leisure time, his interests include hunting, fishing, golf and cooking!

Reg ReimcheGeneral Manager of Canadian Operations, RailserveA Marmon Group/Berkshire Hathaway company with over 70 locations throughout North America, with sectors including switching and transloading, track maintenance and construction and Gen Set locomotive manufacturing, Railserve has become North America’s largest third party switching company.

He started with CP in 1991 in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan where he began his Conductor training and was soon promoted to Yardmaster and is also where he also completed Locomotive Engineer training. Reg worked in numerous locations including Moose Jaw, Regina, Edmonton, Red Deer and Calgary. While at CP he held progressively responsible positions in Yard and Road Operations, Dispatching, Locomotive Management, Business Development and later a Director of Operations. He brings over 27 year of experience to Railserve.

John SmithDirector System Safety and Support, BNSF Railway CompanyJohn holds a degree in small business management from the University of Arkansas. John has been with BNSF for 16 years and joined as a Corporate Management Trainee in Operations. He has held positions in both field operations and the Network Operations Center. Before joining the Safety Department John worked within the BNSF Corporate Audit department.

He currently oversees BNSF regulatory compliance and audit programs for both FRA and FMCSA. He also has responsibility over the Accident and Injury Reporting program, Safety Rules, and the supporting technical systems.

Shawn SmithPresident, Dominion Railway ServicesVP, Northern Plains Rail ServicesWith over 30 years experience, Shawn began his career with CN in operations and marketing/customer service positions. He is a member of the American Association of Railroad Superintendents, the Canadian Railway Club and the

Lexington Group and currently serves on the boards of Alberta Midland Railway Terminal, Canadian Heartland Training Railway Services, and Alberta Prairie Railway, as well as being on the management team at Northern Plains Rail Services. He has 18 years in the regional and shortline industry in both Canada and the United States as an operating

employee, supervisor, and senior executive. Prior to starting Dominion Railway Services in 2012, he spent six years at CP and was GM, Strategic Network Development and Interline Management. Shawn lives with his family in Camrose, Alberta, enjoys baseball and football and is a member of the Edmonton Eskimos Gridiron Gang.

Rob StorozukGovernment of SaskatchewanRob is a Rail Project Engineer with the Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure and has been part of the ministry since 2014. Rob was previously a heavy duty mechanic and long haul truck driver prior to obtaining his degree in Environmental Systems Engineering from the University of Regina. He

has worked previously with Trucking Partnership Programs and Commercial Vehicle Enforcement and is currently part of the Rail Policy and Programs unit and working with industry to develop the Saskatchewan bridge management safety plans and safety audits.

Darin StuckeyDirector, Terminal Operations, Keyera Corporation - Alberta Diluent TerminalsDarin Stuckey has worked for more than 30 years in the Petroleum industry. He holds a Diploma in Petroleum Management along with a Health and Safety certificate from the University of Alberta. For the last 17 years he has been an employee at Keyera Corp. His is currently the Director of Terminal

Operations at Keyera Corp which includes the majority of Keyera’s Rail and Truck facilities.David SutherlandSenior Environmental Planner – Rail, Green Plan, Environmental ConsultingDavid spent 34 years working for CN Rail and retired in 2015 as the Regional Manager Environment for Western Canada. He managed CN’s environmental compliance for Operations in Canada from Thunder Bay To the west coast of Canada (Vancouver & Prince Rupert). Over the years David worked out

of Edmonton, Toronto and Moncton with management roles in Engineering, Regulatory Affairs, Transportation and Environment. Part of David’s “CN experience” included being qualified and working as a locomotive engineer, conductor and belt pack operator. He now works at Green Plan Environment as a Sr Environmental Planner specializing in rail construction project planning, permitting and compliance management for operations.

Terry TimoruskiManager, Storage & Logistics, Pembina Pipeline CorporationTerry has 35+ years of experience in the natural gas liquids (NGL) industry and is Pembina Pipeline Corporation’s Manager of Storage & Logistics, overseeing rail operations at the Redwater Fractionation and Storage Facility in Alberta’s Industrial Heartland. A journeyman instrument technologist by trade with a

fourth-class power engineering certificate, Terry worked at Wolcott Gas Processing and ATCO Midstream. Terry is experienced in project management, construction. Expansion and maintenance of sweet and sour gas facilities made him a natural fit when he joined Pembina in 2012 as the Manager of Fractionation. Terry leads Pembina’s ‘Zero By Choice’ Safety Culture and has an established track record in operational performance focusing on cost management, operational efficiency, maintenance and reliability.

Lisa TuningleyPresident, T-Rail ProductsT-RAIL is Canada’s rail source solutions leader; delivering new and renewable track material and supply chain logistics solutions to Canadian rail companies. Lisa was the winner of the 2013 RBC Canadian Women Entrepreneur Awards (CWEA) in the Deloitte Startup category. T-Rail supplies new and renewable

rail products to the Canadian rail industry. Surrey-based firm helps companies transport goods from central Saskatchewan to the nearest Canadian Pacific line, finding the right specialists and securing building materials, while ensuring the line is built efficiently and, all importantly, as securely as possible.

Arne VigenBritish Columbia Safety AuthorityArne is the Program Manager for Technical Safety British Columbia and has over two decades working in railway industry. He began his railway career working with Bombardier in South East Asia in the mid-90’s. Splitting his time between heavy haul and light transit, Arne has worked across North America

with a focus on wheel/rail interface and track maintenance. Prior to joining the provincial regulator, he was the Technical Advisor with SNC Lavalin’s light transit division. Arne is currently working on his Master’s Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies and resides in New Westminster, B.C.

Dale Winkler and Sean Winkler (Dale’s son)Edmonton Railway ContractingDale’s 32+ years rail experience started as a CP Track Supervisor and Surfacing & Construction and received CPR’s President’s Award for volunteering on railway community projects, such as the United Way, Holiday Train, the Children’s Wish Foundation,

and 2816 Steam Program. He is experienced in railway construction and maintenance and is presently the Manger of Operations for Edmonton Railway Contracting (ERC). He started a mentoring program for new recruits and older employees on railway safety knowledge. Dale’s son, Sean, works part-time on the railway and has experienced first-hand the railway mentoring program. Sean shadowed his father, helping his dad at the museums, fixing track, running the motor car at special events and helping on trains. Dale and Sean worked together on the 2816 steam program and the Puffer Belly Express. At 16 years old, Sean spent two summers at the Aspen Crossing in Mossleigh, Alberta on passenger car service, being a Junior Brake Man, servicing cars and riding the locomotive. Sean works part-time for Edmonton Railway Contracting until he completes grade 12 next spring.
