WHAT: Waddell & Reed – one of the country’s oldest mutual fund and financial planning companies – will kick off an ambitious and unconventional acknowledgement of its 75th anniversary. In partnership with Ivy Funds and the National World War I Museum, a custom 18-wheel “big rig” truck has been transformed into a traveling World War I exhibition. Dubbed the “Honoring Our History Tour,” the exhibition will visit 75 Waddell & Reed communities across the country – stopping at local museums and cultural institutions to raise funds and awareness. Mesa, Arizona, is the 29th stop on the 75-city tour. This unique traveling exhibition offers a free, interactive and educational experience designed by the National World War I Museum – the first and only American museum solely dedicated to preserving the artifacts, history and personal experiences of World War I. The Waddell & Reed Traveling World War I Exhibition features 66 artifacts, such as weapons, uniforms, posters and flags. In addition, visitors will experience the tight conditions of trench warfare, see the relatively primitive tools, weapons, equipment and uniforms, amid sounds and sights of war 100 years ago. The year-long tour honors the men and women who served in World War I – and those who have since bravely served our country and protected our freedom.

In times when state and municipal budgets are tight, Waddell & Reed and Ivy Funds recognized the need to support museums and cultural institutions across the country. To celebrate the company’s 75th anniversary, Waddell & Reed created the Waddell & Reed Traveling WWI Exhibition. The exhibition’s mission is to raise awareness and funding for these national treasures. By traveling to 75 cities in nearly every state, Waddell & Reed hopes to raise $500,000 in donations over the course of the year. Funds raised at each stop will be divided equally between the local museum and the National World War I Museum, based in Kansas City, Mo. The two founders of Waddell & Reed, Chauncey Waddell and Cameron Reed, were veterans of World War I who formed a partnership in 1937 to create one of the longest-standing mutual fund and financial planning companies in the country. The exhibit includes founder Chauncey Waddell’s flight gear, his flight suit and log book.

The Park of Four Waters tour will take you on a tour through undeveloped, natural desert to the ruins of some of these canal systems.

Dr. Dart will discuss Southwestern Indian rock art. The presentation will illustrate southwestern petroglyphs and pictographs and discuss how even the same rock art symbol may be interpreted differently from popular, scientific, and modern Native American perspectives. These lectures are free and open to the public. **February 6, 2012 Wayne Ranney - "Ancient Landscapes of the Colorado Plateau" Author and geologist, Wayne Ranney, will take participants on an incredible landscape tour of the desert Southwest through millions of years of earth history in his presentation, “Ancient Landscapes of the Colorado Plateau”. Arizona used to be the site of giant mountain ranges, long sandy beaches, warm tropical seas and Sahara-like deserts and the evidence for these long-lost scenes are preserved in Arizona's rocks. True-to-life maps have been created that show the sequential changes through time and Ranney will take listeners on a fantastic journey through time. He is the co-author of the book, "Ancient Landscapes of the Colorado Plateau," and will be signing copies of his book after the lecture. **February 8, 2012 Stephen Reichardt, ASU, Museum Studies - “Development and Integration of Cultural Resource Data in a Geographic Information System: An Innovative Model for Museum Collection Management” Stephen Reichardt, in his project on “Development and Integration of Cultural Resource Data in a GIS system”, seeks to preserve and maintain multiple GIS layers of contextual information derived from archaeological investigations within an easy-to-use digital artifact collection management system and also to provide collection specialists, researchers, and students with a visual mode of spatial data interaction. This example builds upon records for the Schoolhouse Point Mound site from the Roosevelt Lake area. Mr. Reichardt is an archaeologist, GIS specialist, and physical anthropologist (MA). He currently works for the Archaeological Research Institute and the Institute of Human Origins at Arizona State University and is pursuing a Certificate in Museum Studies. **February 15, 2012 Christopher Caseldine, ASU, Archaeology - “A Fort on a Hill: Evidence of Yavapai Presence in the Perry Mesa Area” Christopher Caseldine will focus his talk on the archaeology of the Perry Mesa region of Central Arizona. In particular, how current research conducted through the ASU Archaeological Research Institute is reinterpreting our understanding of the region's use by Native American groups. Mr. Caseldine is a graduate associate of the Archaeological Research Institute in the ASU School of Human Evolution & Social Change. His research focus is Hohokam archaeology with a specific interest in the management of their vast prehistoric irrigation systems. He also has research interests in the archaeological past of the Perry Mesa region of central Arizona. **February 29, 2012 Dr. Arleyn Simon, ASU, Archaeological Research Institute - “Many Communities: The Archaeology of the ASU Campus” Arleyn Simon summarizes excavation evidence of many prehistoric and historic communities within the ASU campus in her talk, “Many Communities: The Archaeology of the ASU Campus”. When preparing for new construction, glimpses of the past history of the campus emerge including Hohokam villages, Hispanic barrios, and an early Mormon settlement. Dr. Simon is Director of the Archaeological Research Institute in the ASU School of Human Evolution & Social Change. She specializes in central Arizona prehistory, particularly studies of regional community relations based on ceramic compositional studies.
