Engaged Membership Equals Community Involvement

We need to ask ourselves, why did we become a Jaycee?

When talking to fellow Jaycees I hear many of the same responses including:

meeting new people

sharpening business skills

and an opportunity to make a contribution in the community. Community involvement is the most cited reason members give for wanting to become a Jaycee. There are many community issues in need of support and the good news is we can make a difference. Like any project, tackling community issues is going to take work and dedication from the membership but the emotional reward is far greater than any tangible reward.

I encourage everyone to become more involved in the Kankakee Area Jaycees especially those of you who have not worked on any projects lately.

There are many ways to become more involved in your chapter with the first step being attending membership meetings regularly.

There are many opportunities to contribute to the success of chapter projects and more importantly make an impact on your community.

Members can take a larger role in projects by being part of project committees. The committees have the vision for a project and are responsible for implementing that vision.

If committees are already in place, don’t forget to volunteer during the event. There is always a need for volunteers on the day of an event to ensure that the project is executed smoothly.

The Kankakee Area Jaycees can make a greater impact on the community with initiative and membership involvement.

ID Yourself: JCI IMPACT

Fellow Jaycees! I attended a great training at this September’s GA, JCI

IMPACT. I would love to share what I learned with you and what great

accomplishments we can achieve here in Kankakee! This September’s

general meeting I will be presenting information to you about how we can

make positive changes in our community that SOLVE urgent problems in

our community. Please attend and become part of the SOLUTION!

Want to get involved, but not sure what to do?!

Let us know and we can work with you to create a project or

help you join a project committee for some of our upcoming

events. Two ideas I thought would be great to do this fall are

Get out the Vote and Troop packages. The Jaycees founded

the Get out the Vote program and with November Elections

coming up, we could really make an IMPACT by aiding young

people with voter registration and letting them know about

the Jaycees along the way. Also, I have always wanted to

give back to those that do so much for us, the troops! I

would love to start a collection for Troop baskets that we can

send to our troops to show our appreciation. Email me at

[email protected] if any of these ideas interest you or if

you would like help creating your own event. I’d love to help

guide you through the process!

A Composition about Competitions

On September 7th, 2012, I competed in two competitions at the Illinois General Assembly: Write Up, and Jaycee

Jeopardy. I was a little nervous, I did not prepare at all for either competition. However, once I got into the

room I noticed it was just other Jaycees just like me. There was no need to dress up, there were no judges. It

was time to sign in and start my first competition, Write Up.

I knew I had only 30 minutes to write, so I numbered my pages, wrote my assigned number on my pages and

waited for the topic: If you could go back to any time period, what would it be and why? I quickly thought

about what time period I knew a sufficient amount of information about and one that I could tie in the Jaycees.

I got it, the 1920s! I chose my three reasons for visiting the Roaring Twenties: the birth of the US Jaycees,

prohibition, and women’s suffrage. The only trip ups I had were writing in pen, and skipping a line each

sentence. I like to just write and make changes along the way. I understand the reasoning behind the protocol

though, neatness is important. I finished with two minutes to spare, so I reread my paper and added any

additional corrections.

As I finished, I decided to attempt Jaycee Jeopardy, too.

Jaycee Jeopardy was a no-sweat competition. I wanted to try Jaycee Jeopardy at a GA, and since it was

basically just a written test this time around, I was all for it. Twenty questions, you either know them or you

don’t. I knew a couple, and guessed on the rest. Some questions, I felt like “I should know that!!!” Next time, I

will definitely prepare, and if anyone is looking for a low key competition, try Jaycee Jeopardy!

On Sunday, we got our results. I was nervous to even look at them. I glanced at them and waited to hear the

winner. To my surprise, I won! I was so honored to have won the Illinois Jaycee Write Up! Hopefully I can

attend the Year End GA to compete again; it was fun and very rewarding!

Hey there Jaycees!

First of all I want to thank everyone who came out to our recent M-Night at Hidden Cove. It was such a great time!

Thanks to chairman, one of our newest members, Lucas Smith for hosting! Great job Lucas! Also a big thank you goes to

Heather Winemiller for being our special guest.

As of right now we have 62 members. We did drop a little from last month because there were so many to renew, but

that’s quite alright! We can make September a great month. All you have to do is ask - a neighbor, friend, co-worker.

The worst they can say is no. I know we can make growth this month! And don't forget to tell all of your bachelor friends

to come out on Sept 15 and 22 to audition for our bachelor auction as well!!

Full Steam Ahead!!

Well another General Assembly has come and gone and I am once again humbled and proud to be a

Kankakee Area Jaycee! I have to admit as President I get a lot more nervous at the awards ceremonies

only because I want the people in our chapter who work so hard to make it the great chapter that it is to

be awarded for all that they do! The awards that we receive are merely reflections of a chapter who cares

about our community but also works hard to make a difference, and for that I thank each and every one

of you!

For those of you who are unaware of what the General Assembly is I will give a brief overview of the

weekend. On Friday night all the Illinois Jaycees arrive at the designated location, this time it was Fairview

Heights, IL. We then split up into our regions for a meeting to go over what has been taking place in our

regions and what is coming up in the next trimester. Here is a little peek into our meeting this time around

although it looks like it is all fun and games we do normally accomplish quite a bit! Then it’s onto the

mixer where you get to meet and socialize with several other Illinois Jaycees. After the mixer many people

stay up to socialize and others decide to go on a trip to dreamland so they can be bright eyed and

bushytailed for Saturday’s training sessions or competitions.

5 | P a g e

Kankakee Area Jaycees P.O. Box 2418 Kankakee, IL 60901

Saturday is filled with different trainings to attend and competitions to participate in. This time around

one of the favorite trainings was attended by Anne Fraher the JCI Impact Training. Anne also competed in

the write up competition and won on Friday night! I was able to compete in the master speak up

competition and I too was honored to win. The Saturday lunch and dinner are always accompanied by

awards being given to various chapters and individuals for going above and beyond the expectation. It is

really neat to hear what other chapters are doing and to hear what amazing individuals there are in the

Illinois Jaycee family! The GA is really something that once you attend you really understand what the

Jaycee organization is all about! I would like to encourage everyone to take the opportunity to attend a

General Assembly, it is something that will definitely help you, and just like anything with the Jaycees, you

will get out of it what you put into it! Take advantage of opportunities to help you grow individually and

personally, trust me, you will not regret it!

I would like to recognize and congratulate all of the K3 Second Trimester Award Winners:

Parade of Chapters: #1 Chapter Overall – Kankakee Area Jaycees!!

Runner Up New Member of the Illinois Jaycees – Lucas Smith

Runner Up Outstanding Business Area Project – Friendship Festival Beer Tent: Raquel Holody

An Outstanding International Area Project – Nothing But Nets Fundraiser: Ann Procopio

An Outstanding Officer of the Illinois Jaycees – Raquel Holody

Write up Competition Winner – Anne Fraher

Presidential Medal of Honor – Becky Hagge

As you can see we had a very successful second trimester! I have full confidence we will end this year

strong, who’s with me?! We will need lots of new faces and helping hands to accomplish all that we are

set to do in the next four months. Here is a list of events we have coming up, feel free to join a committee

or just come and help at the event or come and enjoy the event. Bring along a friend who might be

interested in joining this amazing group of young leaders!

The Jaycees along with the AshleyCan Foundation will be teaming up to present the first annual "The Running

Dead" Zombie 5k. This spooktacular event will be held on October 21st at 5 P.M. at the PNC River Road Softball

Complex, just down the road past KCC. A terrifyingly good time, "The Running Dead" will feature hosts of

zombies chasing humans down a path surrounded by trees and the Kankakee River, while dusk draws near. The

magical part is that you get to choose which character you would like to be. Either come to the 5k as yourself, or

dress up like a zombie. The Humans will get a 1-minute head start and 3 name-tags (lives), that they will stick to

their back. After 1-minute, the zombies will then be released to chase the humans. If a zombie catches up to a

human, it can then rip off the human's name-tag, and take one of their lives. The zombie can only take 1 name-

tag per person. If all 3 of your human lives have been taken, you can finish the race, but your time will not be

recorded. Awards go to best time for humans (male and female), most name tags gathered by a zombie, and

best dressed zombie.

Please join us in this unique and fun event, while also contributing to a great cause. The entry fee will be $25,

and half of the proceeds will be going to the AshleyCan Foundation, which is a local foundation that raises

awareness for pediatric cancer. (www.ashleycan.org). This event has the potential to be a staple here in

Kankakee, and only has the potential to grow throughout the years. If you would like to offer your help and be

part of "The Running Dead" committee or have any questions, please e-mail me at

[email protected]. Hope to see you, dead or alive, at "The Running Dead" Zombie 5K!

GiGi’s Playhouse opens on Saturday, September 15 in Bradley. This is a great resource

for Down Syndrome awareness. Our own Stephanie Wilson is opening the playhouse. In an

effort to help this great program be successful in our community, the Jaycees are hosting a

1920s Speakeasy Bachelor Auction on Friday, November 2 at the Majestic Theatre. The

concept is that eligible bachelors in our community will be auctioned off for a date. The

winning bidder will spin a wheel that also reveals what the date package will be. There will

also be prizes and date packages on silent auction for couples.

We already have a great number of bachelors who will be participating, including several

young leaders in our community and several members of the Kankakee County Soldiers

basketball team. If you know of a bachelor who would like to participate and help raise

funds for the cause, we will be having auditions on Saturday, September 15 and Saturday

September 22 at Impact Fitness in the back room.

We will be securing date packages through sponsorships in the community. If you know

of someone or a company that would be interested in sponsoring our event or providing a

date package, let me know!

This event is a Speakeasy theme, so come wearing your suit or flapper dress!

Because the venue can only hold 250 people, we will be limited in the number of tickets that

can be sold. We will need Jaycee volunteers, but we will have to limit the number so that we

can sell as many tickets to the event as possible. As we get closer to the date, I will be

looking for volunteers to work the event, including set up, tear down, and general tasks

during the show. If you are not a volunteer who signed up in advance, but would still like to

purchase a ticket to the event, Jaycees will receive a discounted ticket price.

This is going to be a great community event and an opportunity to help GiGi’s provide a

great service to the Down Syndrome community. The town is excited! Let’s make this a

wonderful time and support a great cause!

If you have not received a facebook event invite from me, let me know. Please pass it on to

any bachelorettes you might know!

Thank you!

Sleepy Hollow

Last October we were

busy, busy, busy with

working on the Haunted

Trail. For some of us, even

though we put in a lot of

blood, sweat, and tears, it

was all worth it in the

end. We made a lot of

new friendships that I

didn’t know was possible.

Although we aren’t doing

a Haunted Trail this year,

we do have the

opportunity to bond

again at the very place

that laid the groundwork

for such close

relationships. We will be

assisting the Bourbonnais

Township Park District by

parking cars for Sleepy

Hollow.

We are needed on the

dates of October 12, 13,

19, and 20. The rain date

is October 21. We will be

needed from 5-11pm. We

need at least 6 people per

shift per night. If you are

Jaycee Spotlight

Name: Lucas G. Smith Occupation/affiliations: Management Trainee at Enterprise Rent-A-Car Bookseller at Barnes and Noble Hobbies: My hobbies consist of joining local sport leagues, reading an hour a day, working out, listening to music, watching movies, camping and hiking, travelling, and driving around town with the windows rolled down blasting some James Brown. What would be (or is) your dream project? I haven't really given this much thought, but I am extremely pumped about the upcoming Zombie 5K. Maybe I'm living my dream project right now and don't even know it. What is something you gained from joining the Jaycees?

Genuine relationships. I have been able to meet and get to know peers from

around the area that have their priorities straight with great intentions. People

that not only care about the community locally and nationally, but care about the

well-being of not only themselves, but of their fellow Jaycees as well. Those kinds

of relationships are genuine and rare.

What do you consider to be your best accomplishment (within or outside the

Jaycees)?

I'm too new to really boast about any accomplishments inside of Jaycees, but am

excited to be an active and helpful member throughout. Outside of the Jaycees,

becoming the Entertainment Manager of the Peoria Chiefs in 2010, after growing

within that career for many years was a worthwhile accomplishment.

What does being a Jaycee mean to you?

To me, being a Jaycee means being an outstanding citizen while working along

with and learning from quality peers. As we all grow throughout our careers and

lives, it is nice to know that there is a large group of caring, interesting, and fun

peers that will be by your side to assist and guide you. I am looking forward to

also be that kind of contribution to the Jaycees.

Is there anything else you would like to share about yourself?

I love a good dance party.

Letter from the Editor

I will be the first person to admit that I despise writing. Always have, and I don’t foresee that changing any time

soon. Writing newsletter articles have always been a challenge for me. I usually stick to informative ones, the

who-what-when-where-why variety, for events coming up. If I happen to write something that doesn’t follow

that pattern, it is usually very brief. (Sad fact, I have already stopped writing this article twice now.) When it

comes time to have an article in, I procrastinate. I usually have ideas of what I want to write about and then I

read other’s articles and think….there goes that idea. Lately there seems to be a theme, why did you become a

Jaycee? Below, I will answer that question and instead of repeating the question to you, I ask you this - What

inspires you? Where does your passion lie?

In the beginning, I joined the Jaycees because I wanted to give back to my community but I just didn’t know

how. I wasn’t the type of person to really venture out on my own. I had a lot of friends who were in the Jaycees

and had actually asked me to join in the beginning. For various reasons, I did not join at that time. I attended

my first meeting in April of 2011. It was at a local restaurant and to my relief when I walked in I saw a few

familiar faces. I remember that by the end of the meeting, I went through a myriad of feelings….awe, confusion,

unsure, a bit overwhelmed, but in the end what stood out the most was the feeling that I was home, I had

found a group of kindred spirits and I didn’t know most of them! I joined the organization at the end of that

meeting and even signed up to help out at my first project! By the end of my first 6 months I had come out of

my shell a bit and ended up accepting the position of co-chair on our chapter’s biggest project, the Haunted

Trail. Keep in mind I had never even been to a haunted house before. I also took on the position of Elections

Chair, because the thought of running for a position on the board had never even crossed my mind. I broke out

of the norm of my life and chose the path less traveled (to me anyway).

Fast forward to today, I have helped out on a variety of projects, from being a little worker bee to the

chairperson. I took on the board position of Secretary and co-editor of the newsletter. I also plan on furthering

my Jaycee career and running for another board position in the coming months. It’s hard to choose just one

thing that has kept me in the organization past that initial joining. Some of the things that have become the

most important to me are the people I have met and the relationships we have formed, the memories that

have been made, the people we have helped, the people we have inspired to help others, but most of all the

person I have become (and continue to become) because of the Jaycees.

The Jaycees have pushed me out of my comfort zone. One way they have done this is by providing me with the

chance to compete in competitions at the GA. Public speaking – definitely not a fan! But I took the leap and did

it. I was nowhere near perfect, but that is the point. While competing helped me jump over that hurdle of

speaking in public, I also learned ways to help improve myself. Another way the Jaycees have pushed me is

through the Passport to Leadership program. Again, to complete the various degrees, I have had to do things I

would not normally choose to. They have also made me pursue things I never thought I would. The Jaycees

continue to shape me on a daily basis.

10 | P a g e

Kankakee Area Jaycees P.O. Box 2418 Kankakee, IL 60901

As I went through my emails deleting the hundreds of them that I reserve in my inbox for no apparent reason, I

came across the emails that were exchanged as we planned the Haunted Trail last year. While last fall for me was a

very trying and stressful time, it was concluded by the culmination of our largest Jaycees project to date. As stressful

as it was, in the end, it was worth it. The days and evenings we spent together as a group changed forever the

friendships and relationships we have with one another. Those of us who worked closely on that project learned a

lot about each other, not only as people but as leaders. We worked together well. We enjoyed each other’s

company. When it was over, we missed it.

In remembering that project-both its successes and learning opportunities, I look to the future of our chapter. We

have learned so much about ourselves and each other. I hope that you will get involved in one of the many projects

that we have in the works for the rest of the year. It is hard work, and sometimes we wonder why we do it, but at

the end of the day we love doing it. We do it for each other, for the friendships we have made, and the experience it

gives us. We do it because we want to make a difference in people’s lives.

Lucinda LaPierre

Business VP

While we all suffer from Jaycee burnout at some point, I can’t imagine my life without the Jaycees anymore.

Sometimes you just need to take a step back and breathe. It lets life find its perspective again.

It makes us question why we do what we do. When you do that, it’s like you have renewed your faith again.

Sometimes it takes that burnout to show us what we can accomplish when we put our minds to it.

This brings me back to the questions I stated earlier. What inspires you? Where does your passion lie? I believe

that once you answer those questions, you become a force to be reckoned with. Whether it be a national cause

– Special Olympics, Cancer Awareness, Support Our Troops, or something on a more personal level – a local

family, a local park that needs updating, etc find out what your passion project is. When you show your

enthusiasm for your project, it becomes infectious – in a good way. People become drawn to you and want to

help. The more help you have, the farther you spread the word – the greater your impact becomes. When you

choose to work on a project that inspired you, you are less likely to get burnt out because it’s something you

want to see succeed.

So my Jaycees friends, I challenge you. Find your inspiration, your passion project. Figure out what it will take to

accomplish and do it! Show your enthusiasm and grab like minded people to help you accomplish your goals.

You can do it, and I will be there to help you out. If running a project isn’t your thing just yet, find some way to

get involved – assist someone with their passion project, run for a board position, join a committee of some

sort. Challenge yourself, because you never truly know what you are made of until you put yourself out there.

And I guarantee that there are a ton of fantastic people that you will meet along the way.

We Believe:

That faith in God gives meaning and purpose to human life;

That the brotherhood of man transcends the sovereignty of nations;

That economic justice can best be won by free men through free enterprise;

That government should be of laws rather than of men;

That earth’s great treasure lies in human personality;

And that service to humanity is the best work of life.

~ Jaycees Creed ~
