WEVE HEARD IT all before: Is that a dog or a rat? Hey, a punt dog! Or the highly original Why dont you get a real dog?
As far as membership in that sector of society still safe to belittle, we who own smaller canine breeds rate right up there with rednecks and the obese. Stereotypes abound, both for us and our pint-sized pals. Were airhead heiresses with a Shih Tzu parked in our Gucci bag or post-menopausal women whove restocked their empty nests with furry surrogates.
And oh, how they mock those poor dogs not quite tall enough to drink out of the toilet bowl. If a movie needs a punchline, a throwaway visual joke, bring in the Chihuahua. Or a bow-bedecked Papillon. Bantamweights really do need their own Al Sharpton to do a little barking on their behalf. Perhaps its time to dispel a few of those tired old myths about us and our kids, as so many of you are convinced that we call them.

around town with a car load of tiny yappy dogs, Ill be the first to admit that I fit quite snugly into this general preconception. So I would like to bestow the Golden Milk-Bone Award to Mickey Rourke, who attended this years Academy Awards with a picture of his recently deceased Chihuahua Loki worn as a pendant around his neck. Showing further class, Rourke thanked all his Chihuahuas, past and present, when he won the Golden Globes for his turn in The Wrestler. He spoke for the legions of big, hunky men who dont think twice about a toy breed or two wrapped in their musclebound biceps.
It takes a real man to love a lapdog. A confident man, a fella comfortable with his sexuality. When hip-hop culture starts to venerate Pomeranians instead of pit bulls in videos, on T-shirts and in lyrics, we may grudgingly trust there actually is something inside of those baggy crotches they so love to grab.

a Christian. Im a Jewish girl who grew up by the seashore on Long Island. The South doesnt have a monopoly on dark mystery.
In spite of a shift away from the bands characteristic existential dread, the Handsome Familys sensibility remains pitch-sdark. I am still the kind of person who will always spot the enormous spider on the wall at the back of the room while everyone else is busily helping themselves to the buffet, Rennie says. Sometimes the spider scares me. Sometimes I am awed by its strange beauty.
A&E!
lyrical and musical obsessions is ref lected in their songwriting process. During 20 years of marriage, nearly 15 of those as a band, Brett and Rennie Sparks have perfected a songwriting arrangement that continues to work for them. I write the words first and then I give them to Brett to find us a melody and chords, and then we both work on the arrangements, Rennie explains. The songs end up always feeling partly mine and partly his. It keeps us bound together.
Those lyrics, at turns disturbing and redemptive, are lashed to the rural sounds of midcentury American music, an association that has inspired many comparisons to Southern Gothic fiction. Sparks rebuffs such characterizations, insisting that despite their pastoral sound, the duo have urban roots. I always take offense when people call my writing Southern Gothic, she says. Im not from the South and Im not even
that has often marked the bands sound. Where instrumentation in the past was often spare and understated, on Honey Moon the sound opens up to expansive, big-screen vistas that recall the earlier work of Roy Orbison and Patsy Cline. For a band that has hewed very closely to the bare-bone elements of American folkacoustic guitar, steel guitar, harmonica and a spare rhythm sectionHoney Moons full-bodied embrace of 50s pop comes as something of a revelation.
This isnt a new influence for the band, however. The music of the 50s, and 40s, has long inspired the Handsome Family. We love the vocal groups like the Platters and the Mills Brothers, Sparks notes. We especially love the Ink Spots and the heartbreaking beauty of Roy Orbison. I saw Roy Orbison sing in a park in Michigan in the late 1980s and the beauty of his voice that night still echoes through me.
The entwined nature of the couples
Thats the Power of Love
/;/H3;3/C:;2/D7A
MANY ARTISTS have explored the dark recesses of the American id, but few have wrung such effortless beauty from it as the Handsome Family. Since 1995, the married duo of Brett and Rennie Sparks has found gold in the strange, the mundane and the macabre. Specializing in folk, bluegrass and country delivered at a stately pace, the band has become known for songs examining the existential cruelty of the natural world and the sorrows of an ill-spent life, and bone-chilling murder ballads. But on the occasion of their 20th wedding anniversary, the two have turned toward territory theyve rarely explored: the redemptive power of love.
Not that the Handsome Family has resorted to churning out pablum. These are messy, complicated evocations of loves mysteries, as Rennie Sparks is quick to emphasize. To me, love songs are just another way of talking about the great mystery of life, she says. Sometimes to talk about life you need to talk about death, but the beauty of a love song is that we are all immortal while we listen to the best of them. It wasnt easy, either. Its always hard to write a song. None of them have ever come easy, so this record was just as hard as the rest.
To complement the bands slightly sunnier disposition on this latest release, Honey Moon, the arrangements are airier, without the sense of oppressive dread
THE HANDSOME FAMILY plays Friday, July 24, at 9pm at the Crepe Place, 1134 Soquel Dr., Santa Cruz. Tickets are $10 advance/$12 at the door. For more information, call 831.429.6994.

vocals and loose musicianship. Going against the grain, the Band of Heathens released their first two CDs as live recordings. This might be due to that fact that their line-up, which consists of not one but three lead singers, came about after the raw and unrehearsed collision of three separate gigs from the same Texas club. Three years later, their polished performances remain sophisticated yet countrifieduncrowded vocals giving life to broken-down-van-blues and mythological corn bread fantasies. After piquing producer Ray Wylie Hubbards interest, his help on their third album elevated the band to top bill at Austins famous South by Southwest festival. Don Quixotes; $10; 7:30pm. (JN)

The actors keep you interested. Gordon-Levitt takes the suave geek role and makes it charming. As the mysterious Summer, Deschanel does what she can playing a girl-next-door who has a covert core. Im in the minority, but I dont think Deschanel is perfect for the part. Shes not unreal enough. Someone British would have made Summer harder to second-guess, given her more teasing glamour. The film will probably complete the coronation of Deschanel as the queen of the alterna-date movie, even as she plays it modest, with occasional out-of-character flashes of naughtiness.
Deschanels aging-little-girl style is as essential to the shoe-gazer romance as those wee big-eyed, big-faced figureslike steamrollered-flat kewpie dollsare to so much modern painting. She has indefinable magnetism, despite her chastity-pledge wardrobe; theres something compelling about the blue hair ribbon, the blue wide-open eyes, the toneless voice that swells into a moment of sweet karaoke on the old Nancy Sinatra hit Sugartown. What is it about Deschanel? Lisa Simpson was seen reading a copy of Non-Threatening Boys magazine. If theres ever a spin-off, Non-Threatening Girls, who could be the cover girl if not Zooey?
(500) DAYS OF SUMMER (PG-13; 95 min.), directed by Marc Webb, written by Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber, photographed by Eric Steelberg, and starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel, opens Friday at the Del Mar in Santa Cruz.

evil Bellatrix and Evanna Lynchs Luna Lovegood are but tiny-portioned side orders. Luna may be a weirdette, but she is by a long chalk the most interesting girl in that school, and sometimes one feels Harry is blind.
The battles arent very thrilling. Director David Yates swamp fight uses conventional too-fast-to-see horror-movie cutting. I dont go for the light show; what draws my interest is the parade of British thespians (Maggie Smith is holding up nicely) as well as the endless Gothic pile of Hogwarts with its innumerable secret rooms and half-forgotten magicsand in the dark, the wand-carrying wizards on patrol, like gunmen waiting for an intruder.
The new Harry Potter casts a princely spell@716/@2D=0C7B3]ZWQS (Fri & Sat only) midnight.

film to acknowledge its audiences love and knowledge of movies by repackaging a pastiche of many of the great ones in a creative way and presenting it as an entirely new film. Now such homages are so commonplace its cliche for directors to work the art that inspired them into their own art, but Raiders was among the first to do this. Plus, its pop-culture cannibalism was fueled by two hardened fanboys, Spielberg and Lucas, rather than just one. Thus we get many references to their own films (Star Wars, Duel, etc.) as well as bits from a 1959 Donald Duck comic (the entire opening scene is based on it), the Steve McQueen film Nevada Smith (get it?), the 1973 version of Lost Horizon, Citizen Kane (love those crates!) and a lot more. Ironically, Raiders has itself gone on to be referenced and ripped-off in probably more movies than any other film from the 80s short of The Road Warrior. Like the man said, pop will eat itself. (Plays Thu at Santa Cruz 9.) (SP)B3/;/;3@71/(E=@:2>=:713 (2004) It took this one a while to grow on me, mostly because even as satire a movie about Bush-style patriotic puppets sounded like a chore. Oh, my friends, how wrong I was. This is comedy gold, and the biggest rush of all comes from what I hereby dub The Most Awesome Theme Song Ever: America, fuck yeah! Coming again, to save the motherfucking day, yeah! America, fuck yeah! Freedom is the only way, yeah! (Plays Fri and Sat at midnight at Del Mar.) (SP)B63C5:GB@CB6(R; 96 min.) After getting stuck with Seth Rogan as an arrested-development geek in her last romantic comedy, Katherine Heigl now gets Gerard Butler as a douchebag radio personality. This woman deserves combat pay. (Opens Fri at Riverfront, Scotts Valley and Green Valley.) (SP)
@3D73EA/E/GE35=(R; 98 min.) Burt (John Krasinski), an alterna-insurance broker, and his pregnant mate, the dour, nervous Verona (SNL alum Maya Rudolph) seek a community. Sadly, they learn that America is a beautiful country full of ugly people. The two travel, meeting parents who are too permissive, or not permissive enough, before visiting an idealistic couple with a multiracial von Trapplike family in Montreal. Director Sam Mendes makes this a Reactionary Road sequel to his last film Revolutionary Road; its a sitcom for nesting hipsters with guest appearances by celebrities playing wacky relatives. (RvB)

grilled fish wrapped in sauce, cilantro and a supple, freshly fired tortillawas lavish. Every bite was a trip to Zihua. Over at my plate it was a battle for which item was the mildest. In the end Id have to say that the sope won.
I had memories of sopes past at La Mission (which once upon a time spun off from El Palomar, home of amazing sopes). The ones I remember were ethereal, delicately fried, paper-thin puffs filled with succulent meat, cabbage and plenty of spicy f lavors.
This one sorely lacked the tantalizing texture and f lavorful punch of its predecessors. The gooey relleno sat
taco should be ($12.95). My a la carte order of La Mission standardsa chile relleno and a chicken sope ($10)both failed to offer much in the way of either f lavor or texture. A paltry portion of refried beans accompanied Jacks taco. The waitress noticed itshe graciously asked if he would like more beansbut the kitchen didnt. In a tight economy, every restaurant should be eagle-eyed as far as providing maximum value for the price. Slow kitchen turn-around and missteps with portions tend to put consumers in a bad mood.
The taco itselfintensely f lavored

/@73A(March 21April 19): Storm chasers are people who love traveling around the continent in pursuit of wild weather. Nothing feeds their lust for life more than getting up close and personal with a tornado or supercell thunderstorm. Many of them are meteorologists who are curious about the way storms work; theyre not motivated solely by bravado. I mention this because, according to my astrological analysis, the coming weeks will be prime time for Aries storm chasers to load up on thrills. The immediate future should also bring excellent opportunities for other Rams who are yearning for breezy adventures that will captivate their imaginations and slake their sense of wonder.
B/C@CA(April 20May 20): Lets say that you lost a treasured object a while back. What do you think the odds are that youll find it this week? Or lets say that a bewildering companion walked out of your life many moons ago. How much do you want to bet that your paths will cross again soon? According to my reading of the omens, events like these could be common between now and Aug. 15. Thats because the past is cycling back to you for another look. Revival and resurrection are in the air. What has been old may become new again. Are you ready to experience something resembling time travel?
53;7@71=@7A13A(Feb. 19March 20): Dont concern yourself with praying to the gods of luck and chance. Ill take care of that for you. Your job is to solicit the favor of the gods of diligence and discipline. Why? Because I think youve got a lot of good work ahead of youwork that will take ingenious attention to detailand youre going to need the extra boost those gods can provide. Of course, their help wont be enough. You will also have to draw on extra reserves of your willpower in order to express new heights of determination and persistence. Together, you and those no-nonsense deities will be an unbeatable team. The better you organize yourself, the more they will help you get organized. The stronger you push to make your efforts crisp and efficient, the easier theyll make it for you to do just that.

ALL THE STARSLINED UP
Once in a rare while it seems the universe is rightwith you. Little or big miracles take place, ordinaryevents become extraordinary. This recently hap-pened with a buyer. I met with Sandy and Paul oneSaturday morning to begin what could be a longprocess to find a decent family home in the BoulderCreek area for this young couple and their two chil-dren. Their finances dictated they could not go muchover $350,000, a challenge in practically any area.We visited 3 properties, all somewhat inhabitable, small, then a fourth one which had only been on themarket 2 days.
Situated on well over a half an acre, this house had3 bedrooms, 2 baths, a huge living room, laundryroom, workshop, over 2300 square feet, 2 cargarage, a creek for the kids to explore, flat lot, with agood juxtaposition of sun on the large swimmingpool and redwood tree framed background in aquiet area on a cul-de-sac. A new septic, newheater, new fridge, new dishwasher and recent poolimprovements made this a true value. We all lookedat each other then rushed to the office to write upthe offer. There was another offer in front that theseller was just about ready to accept but not for thefull price which we offered and which got accepted.
The trials were to come. First the appraiser for theFHA loan noted flaking paint, exterior siding issues, and called for a termite clearance. The homeinspector discovered the roof had been improperlyplaced and needed to be replaced. The seller gra-ciously agreed to pay for all improvements includingthe new roof. The buyer ran up and painted wherenecessary. The accountant for the buyer neglectedan important item on the tax returns. We had to waituntil the IRS received the corrections. The loan lockwas running out. All the stacks of loan papers had tobe re-signed early on a Sunday morning. The IRShad the paperwork needed but would not release itvia fax and now the loan was running out again. Thebuyer again stepped forward and somehow con-vinced the IRS to fax the needed papers. The IRSwould but only to the home fax, not the office fax.Time was running out. The buyer ran home andlooked for the fax machine which had been boxedup weeks ago (the landlord had been given noticeand they needed to be out in 3 days, by the way).He found the fax but half-way through ran out of inkon a Sunday. Meanwhile the lender was demandingthe termite clearance needed also to include somerecommendations. The buyer ran up to the propertyand pounded in nails, covered wood with metal andall sorts of odd and ends to satisfy the lender. Wellyou get it- just a small sampling of the bumpsencountered.
Throughout this long and arduous process not onecomplaint was heard from the buyers. They did notquestion or argue any point, instead asking whatthey needed to do, and again and again going outof their way to make it happen. Having a good mort-gage person, a very cooperative and able listingagent and a very reasonable, non greedy, giving, wonderful seller on the other end, made it all hap-pen- through all the quirks and seemingly insur-mountable challenges along the way. What a delightto work with a group working together in harmony.Stopping by this week-end to say hello to the happynew home buyers and seeing their friends, familyand kids splashing about in the pool was a great joy.Join in the fun; lets find you a place too. Bringpatience and perseverance.
