This Story Tells Of Happiness

A glimpse at the many smil-ing faces at an open rehearsal of Acton Community Chorus tells of former members returning for yet another season of Monday evenings spent with friends amid the rewarding collective endeavor of learning, rehears-ing and performing choral music. But it is the smile on the faces

of newcomers (who never are made to audition) that tells of the warm, convivial spirit that greets all singers who walk through the doors, even those who can’t read music or who have never heard of one’s diaphragm being the most important muscle of all in the singing process. What matters to the Chorus is that everyone who wants to sing is afforded the chance to do so – and surrounded by the friendly,

supporting influence of those who have sung with ACC for years, all singers will feel proud to pitch their voices together at the concert, many singing season after season.

If you missed the first no-obligation open rehearsals of the 2015/2026 season, don’t worry – there is one more taking place Monday, September 28. It is at 7:15 at Faith Evangelical Free Church, 54 Hosmer Street.

Come see why adding (or returning to) the gift of song can really introduce a note (or two) of harmony into your life (liter-ally), which will make such a difference you will wonder why choral singing hasn’t yet found a

place in the lives of more people. To learn more, please

see the Chorus’ website: ActonCommunityChorus.org

The Acton Community Chorus, a nonprofit organization, is supported in part by grants from the Acton-Boxborough, Bedford, Concord, Hudson, Littleton, and Stow Cultural Councils which are supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency; and the Henry Vincent Couper Charitable Foundation.

Donate Blood With The Red Cross

During Liver Awareness

Month this October, the

American Red Cross encourages

eligible donors to give blood and

platelets to support liver trans-

plant patients and others needing

blood products.

Liver transplants are the sec-

ond most common type of trans-

plant with more than 6,000 per-

formed in the U.S. each year,

according to the American Liver

Foundation. Liver transplant

patients may require in excess of

30 pints of blood during surgery.

For blood donor Amy Slattery,

the need for blood hits close to

home. Her mother received a

liver transplant and needed more

than 70 blood products during

the surgery.

“I donate to help others that

needed blood like her,” said

Slattery. “I donate in thanks to

those who donate their blood

products to help save lives.”

Volunteer donors like Slattery

are the only source of blood for

those in need of transfusions dur-

ing transplants and other surger-

ies. Donors with all blood types

are needed, and especially those

with types O negative, A nega-

tive, B negative and AB blood.

To make an appointment to

donate blood, eligible donors

are encouraged to download the

new Red Cross Blood Donor

App from app stores or text

Early Fall Color Could Be Sign Of Tree

DistressIn many parts of North

America, people will soon enjoy one of nature’s finest shows - fall foliage. Color-changing leaves make for a beautiful display, but early changes in leaf-color can be a sign that your tree is stressed and vulnerable to insect and dis-ease attack.

If the leaves on your trees are changing color sooner than similar trees in the area, consult a professional arborist, who can identify any problems and offer possible solutions.

“Premature color change can

be an indication that a tree isn’t vigorous enough to withstand insects and disease organisms that may attack it, not to men-tion the usual changes that occur when the weather turns cold,” says Tchukki Andersen, BCMA, CTSP* and staff arborist with the Tree Care Industry Association. “Occasionally, only one or two limbs of the tree will show pre-mature fall color. This could be a sign of a disease at work, though only the infected limbs are weak-ened.”

The more common situation is for the entire tree to exhibit premature fall coloration, a phe-nomenon usually linked to root-related stress. “Trees respond to

these stresses by trying to cur-tail their above-ground growth,” adds Andersen.

Leaves can be thought of as small factories containing raw materials, products and by-prod-ucts, all in chemical form and some with color. As the leaf is “abandoned” by the tree, the green chlorophyll - the dominant chemical found in most leaves - is broken down and “recycled,” leaving behind other-colored chemicals. Supply lines to the leaves also become clogged, affecting which chemicals are left in the leaf: If the major chemical remaining in the aban-doned leaf is red, the leaf turns red; if it’s yellow, the leaf turns

yellow, and so on.“The yearly variation in color

intensity is due to fluctuating weather conditions, which can affect the balance of chemicals and their composition in the leaves,” Andersen says.

Differing amounts of rainfall, sunlight, temperature, humidity and other factors may have an effect on how bright and how long the “leaf-peeping” season will be in any given year.

Concerned About Combating Climate

Change?State Senator Mike Barrett, has

introduced a new bill (S1747), “An Act Combating Climate Change”, a revenue-neutral car-bon pricing system.

Studies have shown that car-bon pricing makes a significant dent in fossil fuel emissions. The Hudson Democratic Town Committee will be hosting Guest

Speaker Gib (Gilbert) Metcalf, on Saturday October 3rd from 1-2 pm to give a basic presenta-tion on the bill and answer ques-tions. Gib Metcalf is a Professor

of Economics at Tufts University and former Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Environment and Energy at the U.S. Treasury (2011-12).

His current research focuses on policy evaluation and design in the area of energy and climate change. The meeting will be held at the Hudson Fire Headquarters at 296 Cox St., Hudson, MA. Open to the public.

Sudoku

Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Fun By The NumbersLike puzzles? Then you’ll love sudoku. This mind-bending puzzle will have you hooked from the moment you square off, so sharpen your pencil and put your sudoku savvy to the test!

Book Discussion At St. Matthew’s ActonEveryone is welcome to join

in our discussion of the best-

selling book, Being Mortal:

Medicine and What Matters in

the End on Sunday afternoons at

4:30, beginning October 4 in the

St. Matthew’s Sanctuary, 435

Central Street, Acton.

In Being Mortal, Boston sur-

geon Atul Gawande argues that

medicine can not only improve

life but also the process of its

ending. Quality of life is the

desired goal for patients and

families, not devastating proce-

dures that only extend suffering.

With eye-opening research and

moving stories, Being Mortal

asserts that medicine can com-

fort and enhance our experience

providing both a good life and a

good end.

Please join us for a meaningful

discussion of this important book

and how it impacts all of us. For

more information, contact the

St. Matthew’s United Methodist

Church office at 978-263-2822.
