I

Dr. Charles Fuller, the well-known radio preacher, knew what it was like to go through difficult days. He suffered great financial reverses during the Great Depression, and his only child was at the point of death twice. Through that time Charles Fuller and his wife struggled with their faith, not understanding why so many things were going wrong. But they found that God was always faithful. One day on his radio program, Dr. Fuller said, “I pass on to you a little of the comfort wherewith Mrs. Fuller and I have been comforted. We have come to know God in a new way because of the trials we have been going through these past three years. We have known what it is to have much sickness, financial losses, those turn against us and seek to hurt us who we thought were true friends, our only child brought down to death’s door on two occa-sions. I want to tell you that after going through all this and much more, Mrs. Fuller and I know that God is able—that His promises are true. We never could have known the sweetness of trusting God had we not come to the place where we ourselves could do nothing.” God brings trials and testing into our lives for a variety of reasons. One of His pur-poses is so that we can experience His comfort in a powerful and meaningful way. Rather than allowing our difficulties to draw us away from Him, they should encourage us to run to Him, just as a child rushes to a parent for love and reassurance. God is with you today no matter what difficulties you may experience.

DComfort

I remember attending the funeral of a greatly used pastor who had died suddenly at a young age. His death was so unexpected, and it was obvious that his family and the church family had been staggered by the news. Yet despite the sorrow and sadness that were very real, there was also a spirit of hope at this funeral. The people sang "Great Is Thy Faithfulness." Several of the speakers, including the pastor’s family, talked about the importance of trusting God. As I spoke to the pastor’s wife, she told me how she was trusting God in the storm. Being a child of God is no guarantee that we will not endure suffering and times of grief. But as children of God, we have a resource of comfort and strength that the world does not know. We have a God who gives us comfort in the midst of our grief. Because Jesus en-dured suffering, He knows well the pain that we feel. In fact, the Bible calls Him "a man of sorrows, and ac-quainted with grief" (Isaiah 53:3).It should always be true that our Christian friends and church family will gather around us during difficult times. Yet even if that does not happen and there are dark days when we feel like we are all alone, we are never abandoned or for-saken. The God who gives comfort and peace is always there for His children to help them through the darkest days they face.

When life caves in as it sometimes does, we do not need reasons-we need comfort. We do not need some more answers-we need Someone. We thank God that our Saviour Jesus Christ does not come to us with an explanation-He comes to us with His presence. The

Psalmist in Chapter 73:25-26 comforts us with the following words, “Whom have I in heaven but thee? And there is none upon earth that I desire beside thee. My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion forever.” Scripture tells us that God knows what is going on in our lives and is ever faithful in His comfort for His children. Psalm 121 exhorts us to regard these truths for our revival: “I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the LORD which made heaven and earth. He will not suffer thy foot to be moved. He that keepeth thee will not slumber. Behold, He that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. The LORD is thy keeper. The Lord is thy shade upon thy right hand. The sun shall not smite thee by day nor the moon by night. The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil. He shall preserve thy soul. The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in, from this time forth and even for ever more.”

As believers, we could only exclaim, "...His compassions fail not, they are new every morn-ing: great is thy faithfulness" (Lam 3:22-23). The Scripture abounds in illustrations of God's com-forting presence to His people. More than four thousand years ago He said, "While the earth re-maineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter and day and night shall not cease" (Gen 8:22). Every year brought a fresh witness to how God fulfilled this. In Genesis 15 we find that the LORD declared unto Abraham, "Thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them...But in the fourth generation they shall come hither again" (vv.13-16). Centuries ran their weary course. Abraham's descendants groaned amid the brick-kilns of Egypt. God remained faithful and never forgot His promise. In Exodus 12:41, "And it came to pass at the end of the four hundred and thirty years, even the selfsame day it came to pass, that all the hosts of the Lord went out from the land of Egypt." Through Isaiah the Lord declared, "Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call His name Immanuel" (Isaiah 7:14). Again centuries past, but "When the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth His Son, made of a woman" (Gal 4:4).

God is true. His Word of promise is sure. In all His relations with His people God is a source of pervading comfort. He can be safely relied upon. No one ever yet really trusted Him in vain. We find this precious truth expressed almost everywhere in the Scriptures. This is the basis of our confidence in Him. However, it is one thing to accept the faithfulness of God as a source of com-fort, surety and strength, and it is quite another to act upon it. God has given us many "exceeding great and precious promises," and we really can count on His fulfillment of them. We must actually expect Him to do for us all that He has said. We must be comforted with His explicit assurance on these words, "...he is faithful that promised" (Heb 10:23).

Yet realistically there are seasons in the lives of even the best of God’s people when it is not easy to be comforted and assured. Our faith is sorely tried, our eyes bedimmed with tears, and we can no longer trace the outworkings of His love. Our ears are distracted with the noises of the world, harassed by the atheistic whisperings of Satan, and we can no longer hear the sweet accents of His still small voice. Cherished plans have been thwarted, friends on whom we relied have failed us, a professed brother or sister in Christ has betrayed us. We staggered. We sought to be peaceful, and now a dark cloud hides Him from us. We find it difficult and even impossible due to carnal reason to harmonize His frowning providence with His gracious promises. But even a faltering soul and a severely tried fellow pilgrim sought grace to heed Isaiah 50:10, "Who is among you that feareth the Lord, that obeyeth the voice of His servant, that walketh in darkness and hath no light? let him trust in the name of the Lord, and stay upon his God."

When we are tempted to doubt, we must remember that “Thy faithfulness is unto all gen-erations: thou hast established the earth, and it abideth"—Psalm 119:90. The faithfulness of God is our only comforting refuge and sure rock. May we desire and do live a life that is fully trusting, confident and comforted in Him.

The Comfort of God

Page 7: 0915

There are times in all of our lives when we need the Lord's comforting. Whether it is because of a problem, a struggle, or when we feel alone, we need God's

comfort in our life. One way God comforts us is by abiding with us. John 15:10 says, "If ye keep my com-mandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love." When we abide with Christ each day by reading His Word and speaking to Him through prayer, He will comfort us. God is our Heavenly Father, and He knows when we are hurting. Yet, He cannot comfort us if we do not come to Him, abide in Him, and seek His help. We can also find comfort in the HolySpirit. Christ sent the Holy Spirit to comfort us during times of sadness and hurt. John 14:16-17 says, "And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you." When we are going through doubt, discouragement, or even loss, the Holy Spirit is there to help us. God knows that there will be times when we feel alone or hurt and He wants to help us. He wants us to come to Him and seek His help. Once during Queen Vic-toria's reign, she heard that the wife of a common l a b o r e r had lost

her baby. Having experienced deep sorrow her-self, she felt moved to express her sympathy. So she called on the bereaved woman one day and spent some time with her. After she left, the neighbors asked what the queen had said. "Nothing," replied the grieving mother. "She simply put her hands on mine, and we silently wept together." Friend, God wants to help you through your time of sorrow or hurt. He wants you to know that He loves you and cares for you. God wants you to lean upon Him and His strength during your weakness. He wants you to abide with Him and to seek the comfort of the Holy Spirit. Are you going through a tough time in your life? Do you need God's comfort today? Take time today to seek God's comfort by abid-ing with Him. Spend time reading His Word and praying to Him. Let Him comfort you by spend-ing time with you. Also let the Holy Spirit comfort you as you go about your day. Lean on Christ and let Him help sustain you in your time of hurt.
