have the kids help you make them for some quality family time.

The sweetest part about these no-bake treats is they're made with

Karo Syrup, the only widely distributed brand of corn syrup that con-

tains 0 grams of high-fructose corn syrup.

Here are two for you to try: Cookies & Cream Cereal Bar Treats

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Cook Time: 5 minutes

Yield: 2 dozen bars

Mazola No-Stick Cooking Spray

6 cups chocolate crispy rice cereal

2 cups crumbled chocolate sandwich cookies

1 cup Karo Light Corn Syrup

1 package (12 ounces) semisweet chocolate chips

Optional toppings: chocolate cookie crumbs, mini chocolate chips,

mini candy-coated milk chocolate pieces

Spray 13x9-inch pan with cooking spray; set aside. Combine cereal

and cookies in a large bowl. Combine corn syrup and chocolate chips

in a large saucepan over medium heat. Cook until mixture just begins

to boil. Remove from heat. Pour over cereal, stirring to coat complete-

ly. Pour into prepared pan; press firmly to level. Top with any of the

optional toppings, if desired; pat into place. Cool and cut into bars.

Store in air- tight container for up to 2 days.

Peanut Butter & Jelly Bars

Prep Time: 20 minutes

Cook Time: 40 to 45 minutes

Yield: 24 bars

1 cup butter OR margarine, room temperature

1 1/4 cups sugar

1/4 cup Karo Light Corn Syrup

2 eggs

2 cups creamy peanut butter

3 cups all-purpose flour

1 1/2 teaspoons salt

1 teaspoon Argo Baking Powder

1⁄3 cups strawberry jam

1⁄3 cup salted peanuts, coarsely chopped

Preheat oven to 350°F.

Cream butter, sugar and

corn syrup in a large bowl

with mixer at medium

speed 1 to 2 minutes. Beat

in eggs and peanut butter

until combined. Combine

flour, salt and baking pow-

der in a small bowl. Add to

peanut butter mixture; mix

on low speed until dough

forms. Divide dough into

thirds. Press 1/2 of the

dough in the bottom of a

greased 13x9-inch pan

(OR for easy removal, line pan with greased foil, leaving 2 inches foil

extending over pan at ends). Spread strawberry jam over dough. Drop

small pieces of remaining dough over the jam. (Dough will spread dur-

ing baking and cover jam.) Sprinkle top with peanuts. Bake 40 to 45

minutes until light golden brown. Cool in pan on wire rack at least 30

minutes. If pan is lined with foil, use foil to lift bars from pan. Cut into

bars. Delicious with a glass of cold milk!

Dear Heloise: Why do some instructions call for SCALDED MILK? What is the purpose? Thanks in advance! -- Pat W., Harrisonburg, Va.

Very good question, and one I had to think about. Older recipes said to scald milk to kill bacteria and an enzyme that prevented thickening in recipes. Today, most milk is pasteurized, so the bacteria and enzyme are already gone.

Also, scalding milk raises the temperature, which helps dissolve yeast and melt butter when added to bread recipes.

How do you scald milk? Heat the liquid until just below the boiling point, or 180 degrees. After scalding, a recipe typically will state that you let the milk cool to 110 degrees before adding it to the other ingredients. Scalded milk helps make cakes spongy and breads light. -- Heloise

SEEDING LEMONS Dear Heloise: Being from the South,

we like to serve iced tea and have lemon available, but how do you get rid of the seeds? I tried those little mesh-covered things you can put over a lemon, but it was way too messy. I now take one of those battery lights that you can buy for a couple of dollars. I place it on my counter, turn on the light and, while holding the lemon, shine the light through the rind. Voila! I can see the lemon

Sauteing is when you cook foods quickly over pretty high heat! You use a small amount of fat or broth.

Leave space between food pieces, and place only one layer of food at a time. Both meats and vegetables can be sauteed. You want the same-size beef, fish fillets or chicken breasts.

Try sauteing vegetables like mushrooms, bell peppers and snap peas. Whatever the food, stir it frequently so it browns evenly. -- Heloise

WARM BUTTER Dear Heloise: I had a recipe that

called for two sticks of butter, room temperature, and as usual, I had forgotten to lay it out beforehand. I had used my hair dryer that morning and knew that it had a “warm” setting -- aha! I cut the butter up into small pieces and used the low setting on the dryer.
