WHAT IS JOB HAZARD ANALYSIS ?WHAT IS JOB HAZARD ANALYSIS ?

A job hazard analysis (JHA), also calleda job safety analysis (JSA), is a

technique to identify the dangers ofspecific tasks in order to reduce the riskof injury to workers.

JSA: A systematic method of identifyinghazards & control measures to safelyperform a specific task.

Once you know what the hazards are, you canreduce or eliminate them before anyone gets

    hurt.

The JHA can also be used to investigateaccidents and

To train workers how to do their jobs safely.

    Hazard AwarenessHazard Awareness

When conducting a Job Safety Analysis you'll needto take a fresh look at the way things are done atyour work place.

Just because "We've been doing it this way for 20years," doesn't mean that a hazard doesn't exist.

Accepting a risk or hazard is not the same aseliminating or controlling it.

You'll need to take a comprehensive look at allpossible hazards with an open mind. (We'll suggesta way to rank the hazards later.)

Involve your employees in the JSA process.

Identify the job or task to be analyzed.

Break the job or task into key components.

Identify the hazards found in each key component. Use accident history of injuries and near misses.

Identify ways to eliminate or control these hazards.

Act to eliminate the hazard or implement the controls.

Record the hazards identified and the steps taken to eliminateor control them.

Periodically assess controls to ensure they are workingcorrectly.

This following list of questions is intended to helpfocus your effort at identifying and controlling hazards.

While the list is comprehensive, it is not complete, andyou'll need to think about the sub-tasks and theparticular hazards they present.

Questions to ask Questions to ask

Does the layout of the location or process create hazards, (e.g.pedestrian/fork-lift traffic)?

Is there adequate access and egress to and from the work area?

Are workers exposed to temperature extremes? Is the lighting adequate?

Is the work done outdoors? Can the weather create a hazard?

Do the tools or equipment create a hazard?

Is there excessive noise or vibration?

Can any part of the worker's body or clothing be caught in the

    equipment?

Is the tool or equipment appropriate for the task (strength, size,

    power, etc.)?

    Are chemicals used?

Ranki ng Hazardous TasksRank i ng Hazardous Tasks

Once you've identified the jobs that have thepotential to or are in fact injuring workers, you'llneed to rank these tasks and start addressing themost serious first.

One method for ranking tasks considers the

probability of the hazard causing injury, alongwith an estimate of the severity of the resultinginjury. These are not necessarily precise predictions of when

and how severe an injury may be, they are an estimate

of the outcome and the likelihood of the injuryoccurring.

The next three slides present this method for rankinghazardous tasks.

Consider the severity of an injury if somethingwere to go wrong while doing a task.

Look at the four categories under "Severity.

    Severity

    4 Catastrophic, may cause death

3 Critical, may cause serious injury or illness

2 Marginal, may cause minor injury or illness

4 Probable, will occur several times

    3 Occasional, likely to occur

    2 Remote, unlikely but possible

Multiply the "Severity" rank by the "Probability" rank.

Organize the hazardous tasks by their score from highestto lowest, address the highest scored tasks first.

This method can help you decide which is moreimportant, an infrequent job that has the potential to kill aworker, or a frequent job that is injuring workers.
