DEAR DR. BURLESON...

“I love the end result! My smile looks great!”

Patient Spotlight

Victoria Winkel

One of our patients, Victoria Wi n k e l , h a s u s e d h e r “Spectacular Smile” to help others. She spends some of her free time in Joplin, Missouri helping victims of the tornado that happened on May 22, 2011.

Victoria was attending her graduation party the night o f t h e s t o r m . H e r boyfriend’s family, who lives in Carthage, Missouri called to tell her the news. She left immediately to buy some supplies to help and then left for the Joplin area. She stayed to volunteer with the Joplin Family Worship Center for two weeks. Later in the summer, she moved to Joplin and now works with the church in the daycare center.

W h e n s h e i s n o t volunteering, Victoria likes to read, dance and spend time with friends. She will be attending Missouri Southern State University in the fall and majoring in pre-med.

We are so honored to have such generous patients! Thank you Victoria!

Wedding photos are almost more important than the actual wedding ceremony itself. That’s because you will keep and share them, and they will capture and preserve that special moment forever. The last thing you want to see, when you look at your wedding photos, is a smile that you are less than thrilled about. your smile is what people now and in future generations look to for clues about how happy you were on that day. So give them something great to look at!

Making Changes

The good news is that you still have time to take action and correct whatever you don’t currently love about your smile. Nearly everyone can achieve a perfect smile if they want to. Crooked, missing or dul l teeth? No problem! Depending on what you need done, here are some options to help you achieve an amazing smi le for your wedding day:

Invisalign. Many adults are tu rn ing to Inv isa l ign to achieve the straight teeth that they have always wanted. Invisalign are removable, clear aligners, which are probably familiar to you. If you have teeth that are crooked, you can actually have them st ra ightened before your wedding, so that you’ll have a perfect smile in your pictures. The great thing about Invisalign braces is that they are essentially invisible.

Incognito. Another option for

straightening your teeth that you may want to consider is called Incognito. These are hidden braces, and they provide quick results. They are attached to the backs of your teeth, rather than the fronts. An orthodontist applies the custom-fitted braces to the back of each tooth. Then the braces do the work of straightening your teeth while you go about your business. Many people like this option because there is minimal discomfort and, since they are invisible, you can con t i nue wear ing them wherever you are and nobody will notice.

Clear braces. In addition to the invisible-brace options listed above, there is another option: clear braces that can be put on your teeth, made out of plastic or ceramic. They work much the same way as traditional braces, but t h e y a r e m u c h l e s s noticeable, making them more appealing to adults who may have needed braces as a child but couldn’t afford them. Clear braces are a good option for those who don’t mind others seeing that t h e y a r e u n d e r g o i n g treatment, but don’t want to advertise it with the traditional metal-brace option.

Cosmet ic Issues. In addition to aligning your teeth, your orthodontist can address minor gum issues after treatment (for example, if they are overgrown). An orthodontist can use a laser to take care of the problem.

At the very least, it is a must that every bride get her teeth whitened before the big day (and try talking the groom into d o i n g t h e s a m e ) . Te e t h whitening today, especially when done by your dentist or or thodont is t , can have a d r a m a t i c e f f e c t o n y o u r appearance and confidence, and can create a more beautiful smile that you even knew you had in you.

When you work w i th an orthodontist, there is no reason why you can’t achieve a spectacular smile on your wedding day. Whether it is taking years off the color of your teeth by opting for a professional whitening, or finally getting crooked teeth fixed, you will be glad you did. When you look back at those wedding photos in years to come – as you, your kids and future generations will – you want to know that, on your wedding day, you put your best smile forward.

Please call our office today for y o u r c o m p l i m e n t a r y consultation and get started on achieving that perfect wedding-day smile!

Braces Q&A:Q: I have clear braces and am worried about them staining. What things should I avoid so they stay clear?A. Good news! The type of clear brackets we use generally do not stain, so you can stop worrying. However, if you are well into your treatment we may put a type of ligature on your braces called “powerchain” to help close spaces or further align your teeth. This clear material can stain with certain foods or habits. If you have this chain on your braces, simply take the following precautions to

minimize staining. Lots of black co!ee or tea is usually the primary culprit of staining. These

drinks can also discolor your teeth so drink them in moderation. Blueberries, curry and red wine also

have been known to cause staining. If the powerchain or ligatures on your braces appear to be stained and you are concerned, please call our o"ce and we can replace it with a fresh, unstained one in minutes!

Then, our orthodontist will conduct a physical examination of your mouth, teeth, gums, jaws, tongue, and throat. X-rays and other tests may be taken depending on what your dentist suspects is causing your toothache.

We will refer you to your general dentist if the problem is decay or gum disease so that this can be addressed and resolved promptly. If, however, there is an infection that has spread to the tooth’s nerve, a root canal may be necessary. An antibiotic may also be prescribed if there is fever or swelling of the jaw and we may refer you to an endodontist for treatment.

Dental pain is preventable!

Because most toothaches are caused by decay,

practicing good oral hygiene is the easiest way to prevent dental pain. This includes brushing and flossing every day and visiting your dentist for professional cleanings and checkups on a schedule determined by the hygienists. Particularly if you are actively undergoing orthodontic care, it is imperative we ensure your teeth and gums remain healthy throughout the treatment. In addition, eating a healthy, balanced diet that is low in sugar will not only help you prevent cavities but will improve your body’s overall health as well.

Please call our office today if you are experiencing abnormal discomfort from your orthodontic appliances or from an unknown source.

Get a “Wedding-Day Perfect” Smile!Going to the dentist or orthodontic office may not be on the top of your To Do list, but if you’re experiencing dental pain, a trip to our office or your general dentist may be needed.

It may not be “Just a Toothache”

If you have a toothache that lasts more than one or two days, notice swelling around a tooth, loose or broken brackets, soreness, or experience severe pain or fever, it’s time to see us as soon as possible. A thorough examination and diagnosis is important to prevent more serious complications to your teeth, jaw, and gums. Quick action will also ensure your orthodontic treatment stays on track.

There are several causes of dental pain, including:

• Tooth decay affecting the enamel and the dentin, or inner layer of the tooth

• Tooth abscess from severe tooth decay or trauma causing an infection at the root of the tooth or between the gum and a tooth

• Damage to existing fillings due to pressure from chewing, grinding, or clenching

• Teeth grinding resulting in fracturing, loosening, and excessive wear

• Fractured tooth from a traumatic dental injury

• Infected gums from gingivitis or gum disease (periodontitis)

• Broken, loose, or damaged brackets and arch wires

During your exam, we will ask you about the nature of your dental pain, when it started, and if anything makes it better or worse.

Don’t Ignore that Toothache!
