History and roleThe ICB was established in 1931 – and at 87 years old, we’re still extremely passionate about what we do! Our role is to improve and maintain the quality of bookkeeping, accounting, office administration, business management and entrepreneurship training and qualifications in southern Africa. Which is a bit of a mouthful – but all it really means is we work hard to build the credibility and reputation of these fields.

AccreditationThis is why we are a Quality Assurance Partner for the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO). The Finance and Accounting Services Sector Education and Training Authority (Fasset) issues NQF aligned certificates and diplomas to our graduates. The ICB is not a training provider – rather, we are an examining body for several registered business qualifications.

part of a company

The ICB’s 5 programmes are designed to give you the most relevant, practical and useful knowledge and skills to make you employable and valuable.

When you look at the programmes in detail, you’ll see that some subjects appear in all of them. These are the courses that give you the most essential skills, no matter what programme you choose.

We update our course structure and content every year to keep everything relevant. This means you can hit the ground running at work with what you’ve learnt, with knowledge that is completely up to date.

Level up! The ICB’s programmes are divided into different levels. When you complete just a few subjects successfully, you’ll be awarded an ICB Programme Certificate and can move up to the next level. It’s really motivating to have such achievable goals! And you can do it all at your own pace.

Need to press pause? If life responsibilities or finances mean you need to take a short break from your studies, you can. Simply pick up where you left off when you’re ready to start again. Just don’t leave it too long, as the subject material does get updated every year.

Don’t just be employable – be indispensable!

THE ICB’S 5 STUDY PROGRAMMES SHARE COMMON SUBJECTS:

These contain fundamental skills and knowledge that are relevant

and valuable to more than one stream.

This chart shows how some of the subjects overlap across

our programmes. Note that they are not in any kind of order

- you would need to complete the subjects and levels of our

programmes as outlined on pages 8 - 17.

However, you can see here which are the specialist subjects

for each stream (shown in the programme colours) and

how easy it is to complete just a few extra subjects

to attain a second programme qualification.

For example, if you have completed the ICB Financial Accounting Programme, by

obtaining just 2 more subjects (TPAC and PAAD), you can qualify for the Public Sector Accounting

Programme too.CMGT for Accounting, Public Sector Accounting & Office Administration are the same. Coloured cells are unique to that particular programme.

Full time at a collegeMost school leavers opt for this route, because they aren’t working yet or tied down with too many commitments (lucky them!).

Part time at a collegeIf you’re working full time but really want to gain a qualification, this is a great option as you’ll attend classes after hours every week. Part time studies can really increase your options if you’re already employed but looking to up-skill and increase your job security, or even change jobs.

Video studies at a collegeIf you can’t always make scheduled classes, some colleges have the option of letting you watch pre-recorded lectures. Instead of attending fixed classes, you can book viewing times with your college that suit your lifestyle.

DISTANCE LEARNINGDistance learning is the most flexible and affordable way to study while still getting support from a college.

Register with a distance learning college and they will send you the tuition material you need for the subjects you signed up for.

As a distance learner, you will have access to the college’s helpline and support structures, so you won’t really be going it alone.

You work through the material yourself, at your own pace, wherever you are. At the end of your course, you’ll sit your final exam at the ICB examination centre nearest to you.

Monthly exams Training providers conduct formal exams for classroom-based students every month, but do double check when they’re doing the exams for the subjects you’re interested in.

Exams 5 times a yearExams for distance learning and independent students are conducted 5 times a year, at ICB-approved examination centres around southern Africa. See timetables on pages 36 - 39.

2

I CAN CHOOSE HOW TO STUDY...

How long do ICB courses last? They range from 6 months to 3 years, depending on which course you are registered for. Each subject in the course should take about 48 hours of study (roughly 3 months in reality) before you write the final exam.

Today I can proudly say that I know I’m heading

towards a brighter future for me and my children. The ICB

has made me realise that I’m capable of anything that I set my mind to.”

- Siyabonga, ICB student

AQCLASSROOM STUDIES

INDEPENDENT SELF-STUDY (not recommended)

This option means you can do the work at your own pace, but you are entirely on your own. Which means you’ll have to get hold of all course materials yourself, and you’ll have no access to tutor support from any college, the ICB, or the publishers of the textbooks.

19

I CAN CHOOSE HOW TO STUDY...

SUPER FLEXIBLE STUDY OPTIONS TO FIT AROUND YOUR LIFE

Just finished school and can’t wait for campus life? A working mom with lots of ambition, but very little time? On a mission to study intensively and qualify in just 6 months? Or maybe you have a longer term plan to study on the side while working full time?

Whatever your situation, there will be an ICB study route that works for you. We have hundreds of accredited training providers (colleges) across southern Africa, who will provide you with invaluable tuition and support, whether you register for classroom or distance learning.

In a classroom, via distance learning, full time or part time? It’s up to you!

I’m a divorced mom and support my daughter on my own. I’m bettering myself and my circumstances. I want to be a good example for my daughter.” - Marisa, ICB student

also sort you out with course materials and prepare you for your

final exam.

The ICB’s job is to test your knowledge at the

end of your course. We’re an examining

body only - not a training provider. A bit

like the traffic officer who conducts your

driving test (but didn’t teach you to drive)!

3I CAN CHOOSE WHERE TO STUDY

Over 500 providers to choose from!ICB courses are available at hundreds of accredited training providers in southern Africa. This page shows just a small selection of them. Our providers offer classroom or distance learning – or both.

MY ICB LEARNING

EXPERIENCE 4Giving you the best chance to succeedThe ICB’s unique phased learning model applies to ALL our 30 subjects. It’s been designed to empower you to learn concepts and grasp skills that will stay with you for life.

Your exam entry fee covers not just the final exam, but your PoE and the 5 x ICB-standardised Tests and Assignments. Now that’s thorough!

ONCE YOU HAVE DONE THESE...

I’ve decided WHAT TO STUDY

I’ve chosen HOW TO STUDY

I’ve picked WHERE TO STUDY – I’ve registered with a college and they’ve helped me plan my workload.

SUBJECTS ARE FLEXIBLE TOO!How many and which subjects you do at a time is up to you. You can do as many or as few as you want to at the same time. We do recommend you do the subjects from the lower levels first and work your way up, but this isn’t compulsory. You’ll just need to make sure you’ve achieved all the subjects required for your qualification.

YOU CAN GET STARTED!

Classroom students will do this through their colleges.

Distance learning students will enter on the Student Portal online. Go to www.icb.org.za and click through to the Student Portal.

Choose your qualification first. Then choose the subject(s), exam date(s) and venue for your exams, and submit your exam entry along with the required fee. All students will get an email confirming their exam entries.

4

MY ICB LEARNING EXPERIENCE

EXAM DATES AND VENUES

Classroom students: Most colleges hold exams on-site every month, so check what your college’s schedule is.

Distance learning students can enter ICB exams in February, May, July, September and November. Exams take place at the ICB-approved examination centres around southern Africa.

Pay your ICB registration and exam fees as early as possible, so we can send you your PoE ASAP. Your PoE is an amazing tool to help you study. Don’t leave it to the last minute or you’ll really be disadvantaging yourself!

WHEN DO I GET MY Portfolio of Evidence?

• Check that all your personal details on the cover are correct. Let your college/the ICB know ASAP if anything is wrong.

• Read through the entire PoE and fill in information where you are asked to.

WHAT MUST I DO WHEN I GET MY PoE?

3 Your PoE will arrive 3-4 weeks after the ICB receives your exam entry for a specific subject.

How many Portfolios will I get? You’ll get one PoE per subject per exam. Each PoE is customised to that specific subject. Distance learning students will receive their Portfolios directly; classroom students will get them from their colleges.

EXAM TIMETABLES AND VENUES Pages 36 - 39

1 ENTER FOR AN ICB EXAMREGISTER WITH THE ICB

IMPORTANT: You can only write your final exam if you have entered before its closing date, paid the exam fee and your ICB annual student registration fee. See our 2017 fee schedule on page 35.

Distance learning students can register online on the ICB’s

Student Portal.

Classroom students will be registered by their colleges.

Registration means that we will add you to the ICB database and issue you with a student number. You only need to register once, and your student number stays the same throughout your studies.

You will need to pay the ICB registration fee when you register with us for the first time, and then each year that you are actively studying an ICB course.

WHEN DO I HAND IN MY PoE?• A few days before your final exam,

go through the checklist in your ICB Portfolio Administration Guide to make sure you have done and

included everything. Make a copy of your entire PoE as a backup.

• Take your completed PoE to your final exam. You’ll hand it in there.

4

Need to postpone your exam?

If you’re not ready to write your final exam, you can postpone it ONCE only to the next exam date. Submit your postponement request to the ICB before the last date for postponements for that exam cycle (see the exam timetables for these dates for postponement date on pg 36-39).

Sick on exam day?

You can apply for a medical postponement and you’ll need a medical certificate. Contact your college or the ICB for more information.

Missed your exam?

If you did not attend your exam, and did not postpone it in time, you’ll have to start the subject over by re-entering for the exam and getting a new PoE.

Your ICB Portfolio Administration Guide This is your indispensable guide to studying your ICB subject! Your ICB Portfolio Administration Guide tells you exactly what you need to do throughout your ICB studies. It explains how to fill in your PoE, and contains lots of

forms you need to complete. Work through it step by step and follow all the instructions in it, and you’ll be on track for success!

ICB Tests and Assignments For every subject, the ICB sets 3 Assignments and 2 Tests that help you to test your knowledge during your studies. Distance learning students will find the ICB Tests and Assignments in their PoE when it arrives. Classroom-based students will get their ICB Assignments in their Portfolios, and their ICB Tests will be given by their lecturers during their studies.

Answer books You’ll also find blank answer books in your PoE for you to write the answers to your ICB Tests and Assignments in.

• When you have finished writing your final exam, you must add the exam question and answer papers to your PoE and hand everything in together.

• You cannot send the ICB anything else for your PoE after you have handed it in. Each subject is divided into 3 learning phases. You’ll do an ICB Assignment during each phase, and at the end of phases 1 and 2, you’ll complete an ICB Test to test your knowledge. These tests have been set by the ICB and are standardised – all students must complete them.

Your final exam marks the end of the third learning phase.

This integrated way of learning helps to prepare you (and is good practice) for your final exam. You’ll know what to expect – no surprises!

Your college will give you your course materials and textbooks, whether you are a classroom or distance learning student. If you chose to study independently, you’ll have to get your own textbooks and course materials.

If you have queries about the work, please speak to your training provider. They will be able to help you with questions about your subject content, theory, assignments, etc. If you’re an independent student and have chosen NOT to study via a college, you will have to find the support you need yourself.

The ICB is strictly only the external examining body for these qualifications. To remain independent and fair, we cannot get involved in any support or tuition.

?

The ICB learning experience is unique – our academic team

has designed it to give you the best possible chance of learning

effectively and passing your subject first time. But it’s not just

about passing the exam. Our methodology makes sure you get a deep and thorough understanding

of your course materials. So you don’t just get a qualification - you gain real skills that you can use in

your job from Day 1.

Your PoE is one of the 4 tools that will help you to study your ICB course:

Your college tuition, study materials and support from your college are the other 3 tools to help you succeed in your studies. Check with your college which of these they offer:

Results are released about 7 weeks after your exam. See the exam timetables for results release dates.

Classroom students will get their results from their colleges. Distance learning students will be able to get their results on the Student Portal, and they will also be emailed to you.

NOT YET COMPETENT?If you qualify for an exam re-write you don’t need to redo your PoE, just the final exam, which will count 100%. You’ll need to redo your exam within 12 months. If you are again not yet competent, or miss your re-write, you’ll have to start the subject over. You can carry on with your other subjects in the meantime.

COMPETENT?Congratulations! Now you can move on to your next subject. Finished an ICB level? You’ll get an ICB Programme Certificate from the ICB within 2 months. The ICB submits your qualification details to FASSET, who then processes your NQF Qualification Certificate. Their processing time is about 6 months. You can also migrate to another programme just by completing another few subjects. (See page 7.)

PASS MARK: YOU NEED TO GET

OVERALL TO BE DECLARED COMPETENT.

60%70% of your final mark comes from your final exam. You must get

a minimum of 50% for the final exam to be declared ‘competent’ in the subject.

30% of your mark comes from the ICB Assignments and

ICB Tests that you do during your course.

70%YOUR FINAL EXAM

ICB ASSIGNMENTS AND ICB TESTS30%

Depending on how you do, you’ll either be declared COMPETENT or NOT YET COMPETENT.

Classroom students: Your ICB Tests are provisionally marked by the college, then

moderated by the ICB.

HOW IS EVERYTHING MARKED?

Distance learning students: Everything in your PoE will be marked by the ICB.

10 11 RESULTS

REGISTER WITH A PROFESSIONAL BODYIf you’ve completed a full qualification, you can apply to register with a professional body like the ICBA. See page 29 for details.

The professional bodies you can register with are: Q. I submitted my PoE but didn’t include

all my ICB Assignments and ICB Tests. Can I submit these later? No, you need to make 100% sure that everything is included in your PoE before you submit it. The ICB cannot accept any additional materials for marking after you’ve handed it in. Only what you hand in at your final exam will be marked.

Q. What if there’s no examination centre near where I live? The ICB arranges exam venues throughout southern Africa and a detailed list is available on www.icb.org.za. If you live and work more than 200km from an official examination centre, you can submit a Private Invigilator Application to the ICB with the prescribed fee, which will be considered on an individual basis. If a new centre opens after you’ve submitted your application, we reserve the right to allocate you to it.

Q. Can you send me past papers so I can practice for my exam please? Nope, sorry. Past papers are not available because if outcomes change, past papers will be out-dated - plus we need to protect the credibility of the papers. Your course materials (which do contain sample questions) and the ICB Assignments and ICB Tests that go into your PoE will prepare you for the questions in your final exam. Please speak to your training provider if you feel you need extra help.

Q. If I’m studying an ICB course independently, can I call the ICB for help with assignments or understanding the course material? No, the ICB does not provide tuition or study support to any students. If you’ve chosen to study independently, you’ll have to find the answers yourself through your family, friends, colleagues or the internet.

Q. I can’t decide between college and independent study. What should I choose? College study (classroom-based or distance learning) is the option we always recommend, as you’ll get help from a college if you are stuck with any of the coursework. If you’re studying independently, you’re entirely on your own. Independent study works for very few people – you must be very proactive, resourceful and have a great support network to do it successfully. The college route can be flexible, and offers you support.

Q. Can I just show up at a final exam and write it? No. To be allowed to write an exam for a subject, you must have entered the exam for that subject, paid for it, had the ICB confirm your registration – and you must have done all the coursework for the subject too.

Study further with the ICBAccredited, reputable and recognised qualifications

All ICB qualifications are registered on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA).

Our programmes are valued by employers, and our graduates are recognised locally and internationally by several professional bodies.

ICB qualifications are modular, which means you can build on them as your studies or career progress. You can also qualify in another programme just by completing a few more subjects. See the table on page 7 for more.

Find a job In association with CareerJunction, South Africa’s hugely popular job site, you can search and apply for financial and admin positions at www.icb.org.za/careers

What I can do with my ICB qualificationsAs well as making you attractive to employers and clients, your ICB qualifications can also lead you to these opportunities:

I CAN STUDY FURTHER...The ICBA is the sister organisation of the ICB and grants membership at a number of levels based on your qualification(s) and work experience. The ICBA recognises all the ICB’s current qualifications, as well as other relevant qualifications that are registered on the South African National Qualifications Framework. Foreign qualifications are also recognised, as long as they have been evaluated by SAQA.

If you want to register as a tax practitioner, you’ll need to become a member of SAIT. SAIT recognises the ICB’s FET Certificate: Bookkeeping, and the National Diploma: Technical Financial Accounting qualifications. Students who register with SAIT with the FET Certificate: Bookkeeping qualification must upgrade this to the National Diploma: Technical Financial Accounting within a year of becoming a member. SAIT has several other membership criteria – please contact them for details.

To apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) you’ll need to submit: • The ICB Student Details form and Guidelines for Recognition

of Prior Learning form.

• Proof of payment of the ICB’s RPL application fee. This is a non refundable fee of R440, to cover the review process which is done individually on a case by case basis.

• Your detailed CV.

• Certified true copies of your official transcripts of results, as issued by your previous training institution.

• International students must get their non-South African qualifications/subjects certified by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) first. Please attach the relevant SAQA Certificate of Evaluation of Foreign Qualifications.

• The accreditation number of the training provider who awarded your previous qualifications/part-qualifications (e.g. DHET, Seta’s QAP, Umalusi, CHE).

• The NQF level and SAQA qualification registration number for your previous courses. e.g. For the National Certificate: Bookkeeping the NQF level is Level 3 and the SAQA number is 58375.

To be considered for exemptions/Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and credit towards an ICB qualification (note: this is not guaranteed), your previous qualifications or part-qualifications must be registered on the NQF and should have been attained within the last five years. If your NQF-registered qualifications are more than five years old, you will also need to provide proof of more recent, relevant work experience.

We’ll review your application and may offer you credits based on subjects you’ve already passed, or we may ask you to complete a RPL Portfolio of Evidence (PoE) which we will supply.

If you qualify for exemptions and want to go ahead and accept these credits, you will need to pay another fee to be granted full or conditional exemptions, and remember: you must be registered with the ICB too.

OTHER USEFUL INFORMATION...

For more information, please see the Learnerships section on the ICB website: www.icb.org.za/qualifications/learnerships

* Not all ICB courses are offered as learnerships.

Q. Do I have to be employed to be able to study via a learnership?Yes, you must be employed. Your employer must be accredited by the ICB as a Workplace Training Provider to offer our learnerships.

Q. Do you have a list of companies that offer learnerships? No, you will need to approach companies yourself.

Q. Can the ICB give me a learnership? Unfortunately not. We are not a training provider. The ICB’s role in learnerships is to assess your theoretical work, and your practical experience (your Workplace PoE).

AQ

File this under ‘useful’!If you’re working already, or have completed some courses in the past, read on.

LEARNERSHIPSTheory + on-the-job experienceIf you’re working already, and your employer is an ICB-accredited Workplace Training Provider, you could get an ICB qualification via a learnership*. You’d do the qualification via the ICB’s usual exams but the practical part would be done while you’re working on the job. You would also need to complete an ICB Workplace Portfolio of Evidence (PoE), which will be reviewed by an ICB examiner.

Learnerships are great for employees, as you can earn while you learn. Some students even get their studies subsidised by their employers, as learnerships also offer incentives to companies.

ICB FEES20172017ICB BURSARIES

We know that some of the keenest and most deserving students find it hard to pay for their studies.

In 2016 the ICB awarded 25 bursaries, each worth R5,000. The best part is that our bursaries do not have to be repaid. We just ask that recipients put them to really good use and study hard!

How to apply for an ICB bursaryTo be eligible for an ICB bursary you must:

• Already be studying an ICB programme or qualification.

• Have a good academic and attendance record.

Q. What are the criteria for awarding bursaries? ICB bursaries are awarded according to academic performance, financial need and any special circumstances.

Q. Do you award the bursaries in cash? No. Bursaries are paid directly to an ICB-accredited training provider or other relevant ICB accredited service providers.

OUR POLICIES AND PROCEDURESThe fine printYou’ve heard it on the adverts: “Terms and conditions apply.” If you’ve decided you’d like to study an ICB programme, please take some time to read through our Examination Policy. It explains the terms and conditions attached to our programmes and exams.

We update this policy regularly and you can always download it from www.icb.org.za, find it in the Portfolio Administration Guide in your Portfolio of Evidence, or contact our office (see back cover for contact details) and we’ll send it to you.

For bursaries in 2017, make sure your application reaches the ICB by 30 April 2017.

Successful applicants will be contacted by 30 June 2017.

Between January and April, the bursary application form can be downloaded

from www.icb.org.za
