Product description

Product descriptionEMC® Centera® is a networked storage system specifically designed to store and provide fast, easy access to fixed content (information in its final form). It is the first solution to offer online availability with long-term retention and assured integrity for this fastest-growing category of information. EMC® CentraStar® is the operating environment that runs the EMC Centera cluster.

These release notes support CentraStar version 4.2 and supplement the EMC Centera documentation. Read the entire document for additional information available about CentraStar version 4.2. It may describe potential problems or irregularities in the software and contains late changes to the product documentation.

These release notes include fixed and known issues reported as of the publication date of this document. For the most current listing of fixed and known problems, view them online in Issue Tracker. To open Issue Tracker, follow these steps:

1. Go to the EMC® Powerlink® website at:

http://Powerlink.EMC.com.

2. From the menu bar, select Support > Interoperability and Product Lifecycle Information > E-Lab Issue Tracker Information > E-Lab Issue Tracker.

3. To familiarize yourself with how to use Issue Tracker, click E-Lab Issue Tracker Help in the upper-right corner of the window.

New features and changesThis section details the new features and changes included in this release. The EMC Centera Online Help contains details of all functionality for the release.

Multiple Access NetworksWith CentraStar 4.2 you can create and manage multiple access networks so that each application accessing EMC Centera can have its own secure network identified by a unique name.

4

New features and changes

Each access network is serviced by a unique set of access nodes in the same cluster. Access nodes cannot be shared across access networks. Access networks must have at least two access nodes and no more than half the nodes in the cluster.

An upgrade to CentraStar 4.2 will not impact any existing single access network configuration. All nodes that are not part of the access network are considered as part of the “default” network. The replication failover address specified in the standard configuration using the set cluster replication command is used as the failover address for the “default” network.

The replication failover address for each custom access network is specified by using the update accessnetwork command.

Multiple Access Network commandsTable 2 displays the new commands that support Multiple Access Networks..

Impact on external NTP synchronizationOn upgrading to the current release, all access nodes are moved to the "default" access network. This will not impact external NTP synchronization functionality as CentraStar 4.2 uses access nodes from the "default" access network for external NTP synchronization.

However, if you choose to use custom access networks, the number of access nodes that participate in external NTP synchronization is reduced. If you remove all access nodes from the default access network, the external NTP feature will be automatically disabled.

Table 2 Multiple Access Networks commands

CLI command Definition

create accessnetwork Creates a new access network.

delete accessnetwork Deletes an empty custom access network.

update accessnetwork Updates the failover IP address of an existing custom access network.

show accessnetwork list

Shows the failover IP address and number of nodes for the access networks.

show accessnetwork detail

Replication SchedulerCentraStar 4.2 allows administrators a convenient and easy way to automatically pause and resume replication by using a scheduler. You can set a weekly schedule to pause replication in 30 minute segments using either CLI commands or a GUI available through Centera Viewer (by following the path Commands > Replication Scheduler). This information is presented in the server’s time zone. However, when you are using Centera Viewer or the CLI you are

Figure 1 shows an example of the Centera Viewer Replication Scheduler.

New intracluster migration alertsNo new alerts were added to support Replication Scheduler.

Health Report The Health Report now contains information about scheduled replication pauses.

Table 3 Replication Scheduler commands

CLI command Definition

replication schedule pause ddd.hh.mm ddd.hh.mm

Marks time slots as paused by entering a start and a stop time.

replication schedule reset Marks time slots in the scheduler timetable as resumed, that is replication is turned back on. It accepts either a begin and end time or all which turns replication back on all the time.

show replication schedule Shows time in client’s time zone as a list of time when replication is paused.

New features and changes

Intracluster migrationThere are two new enhancements to intracluster migration.

Partial cube migrationPartial cube migration allows you to unload a subset of nodes in a single-cube or a multi-cube cluster. For example, in a mixed Gen4/Gen4LP cube, the Gen4 nodes can now be migrated without having to migrate the Gen4LP nodes as well.

Protection scheme transformationCentraStar 4.2 fully supports protection scheme transformation via intracluster migration. Protection scheme transformation means that all new and legacy data to be migrated will change its protection scheme based on the cluster configuration. Customers can transform the data protection scheme from mirrored to parity and vice versa. You can now choose to change the protection scheme at migration time or run a report before starting the migration. In both instances, the new prechecks are based on the current protection scheme.

New intracluster migration commandsThe two new CLI commands in Table 4 were added for intracluster migration.

New intracluster migration alertsTwo new alerts were added for intracluster migration:

◆ Alert 5.2.9.1.01.07 is sent when the precise prechecks calculations report is created or creation is failed. The severity level of the alert is a warning.

◆ Alert 5.2.9.1.02.04 is sent one time when you chose to perform precise calculations during migration and the report reveals capacity issues. The severity level of the alert is a warning.

Table 4 New migration commands

CLI command Definition

migration calculations report

Retrieves the last migration calculations report that was created by the migration precheck or the create migration commands.

migration calculations abort

Stops the currently running calculations snapshot.

LDAP failover CentraStar 4.2 enables an administrator to specify an optional secondary IP in the CLI configuration command for AD/LDAP server. The failover LDAP server is configured in the same way as the primary LDAP server.

During authentication, if bind with primary LDAP server fails due to connectivity issues, the configured failover LDAP server is used. If the primary LDAP server certificate validation fails during authentication, there will not be a failover to the secondary LDAP server.

New LDAP/AD commandsThe set authserver command was removed and the commands in Table 5 were added.

New features and changes

Note: The show authserver command is replaced by show authserver detail and show authserver status.

Alerts One new alert was added to support LDAP failover. Alert 5.2.10.1.01.01: This alert is for the administrator who configures LDAP server connectivity parameters and operates the LDAP server.

Impact on Centera ConsoleCentera Console displays the following LDAP server health report fields:

◆ Enabled (yes/no)

◆ Server type (LDAP or AD)

◆ Server status (N/A, OK or error message)

◆ Failover server status (N/A, OK or error message)

Health Report Health report includes the following information on configured LDAP server:

Other changes

Audit log of logoutsBeginning in CentraStar 4.2, the system records whenever a user logs out of the CLI or Centera Viewer. See the Centera Online Help for further details on audit logging.

Increased default number of pools and profilesBeginning with CentraStar 4.2, the default number of pools and profiles has been increased from 100 to 300. For customers who have previously purchased licenses for extra pools and profiles, an additional 200 pools will be added upon upgrade to CentraStar 4.2. Note that the maximum number of pools and profiles on a cluster is 500. If Centera Virtual Archive is install, the maximum number of pools is 200. Contact your EMC representative for further information.
