Together with the pictureof the new channel, you willsee two info bars on thescreen in the top and inthe bottom part. The upperone will inform you about thechannel number, name, usedencryption systems, as wellas SNR, AGC and BER. Thebottom one is more about thechannel contents, displayingthe names and starting timesof the current and followingevent. It also tells you if thechannel has teletext, subti-tles and EPG. Speaking of thelatter, its also quite intere st-ing. AB IP Box 350Prime PVRoffers it two ways eitherEPG is displayed for the cur-rent channel only, or withneighboring channels as well.In the latter mode, you canpress the numerical keys

little further on. Once thechannel search is completed,youll land in the main chan-nel list. Already here you canexperience the menu style of Enigma. Prepare to use thecolored buttons a lot. In thechannel list, pressing the redone will display all channels,the green one will let youselect the particular satel-lite (with sub-options newlyfound, sorted by provider orall channels), yellow will listall the broadcasters that thereceiver found, and the blueone give you access to thefavorite lists, which are atthis moment still empty. Butanyhow, you are one clickaway from having the rstpicture on your TV screen !

Still, before we start watch-ing TV, lets explore a bitmore. When you press the

Menu button, dont expecta long list of items to appearon the screen. Here you willsee one at a time, and canswitch between them usingLeft and Right buttons. Therst i tem, TV mode, lls thechannel list with TV channels,second Radio mode withradio stations respectively.The third one is File Mode,here the channel list turnsinto the list of les, availableon one of the connected harddisks or USB devices. Fourth Information doesnt

just tell you the model of thereceiver youre using, but

also the detailed informationabout the channel currentlyselected, including all thePIDs, video format, aspectratio, encryption system, andeven bitrates for audio andvideo, which are measured onthe y from the t ransmit tedsignal!

Fifth menu item is called Shutdown, here you can ndthe various receiver restart-ing options. Sixth is Setup,the main place to congureAB IP Box 350Prime PVR.Everything you would everwant to modify, personalizeor remove, you can nd here.Including satellites, trans-ponders, channels, network,languages, hard disks, USBdevices etc. Seventh is called

Games, which providesquick access for installedplugins. Eighth submenu is

Timer for programming therecording events, and ninthallows to switch the picturefrom the receiver to the oneavailable from your VCR.

Teletext decoder is alsoamazingly fast, but this issomething we would expectnow anyhow from a modernreceiver. Switching betweenpages is as fast as betweenchannels with AB IP Box350Prime PVR, so you wouldhardly want to return to yourTV sets teletext decoder.

PVR, USBand LANAnd here comes the fun

part for those who love toplay around. Of course, thePVR here is something thatany family member wouldenjoy, but the latter twoare for the true experi-menters. For the PersonalVideo Recorder to be used,r st you have to install thehard disk into the receiver.Unfortunately, this involves

opening the case, and at themoment this model is notoffered with a HDD alreadybuilt in. But once everythingconnected, all you have todo is to format the hard disk(Setup System Settings

Harddisk setup). Right afterthat you can start record-ing your favorite shows in aash.

In case you see somethingon youd like to record, justpress the button with thered dot. Its also possible toselect the recording start/stop time in the Timer menu,or use the EPG. In the latteryou just have to select theshow youre interested in,then press the blue button,which takes the programname and start/stop times

to the Timer menu, whereit can be adjusted further.While recording, the receiverdisplays the remaining diskspace on its segment display,so you will always know, howmuch more you can record.Later all the recordings canbe easily accessed in FileMode Recorded Moviesmenu.

Serious step forward wasdone with adding a USB portto AB IP Box 350Prime PVR.However, unfortunately, it

was probably not plannedout to the end to be asuser-friendly as possible. Itcant be used for the PVRrecording, only for softwareupdates and plugin installa-tion. There is one nice fea-

ture, however, that a lot of users would enjoy takeyour USB dongle, copy yourfavorite music in MP3 format,and go to File Mode usb-disk menu. When the chan-nel you watch starts witha commercial break, youcan listen to couple of yourfavorite tunes. However, todo this, rst the USB donglehas to be formatted in Ext3le system by the receiver(Setup System Settings Usbdisk Setup). Then,either you have to copy theles from the computer with

a Linux OS, either use a pro-gram like LTOOLS by WernerZimmermann for Windowsmachines. Unfortunately,its not possible to accessa USB-dongle formatted bythe AB IP Box 350Prime PVRdirectly from Windows.

And while the USB partstill needs some work to bedone on, the LAN part is asgood as it used to be. Andeven better. We connectedthe receiver to the WiFirouter we have here in the

test lab, then used Setup Expert Setup Communi-cation Setup to congure it.According to the type of yournetwork, you can choose theDHCP mode to get all theneeded parameters auto-

DXers should have nothing more to desire itspossible to enter all the PIDs, and read suchparameters which are hardly shown by any other receivers. At the same time, almost any member of the family would enjoy the super-fast zapping,offered by AB IP Box 350Prime PVR. Web inter-face of this receiver allows to set almost anyparameter with just a couple of clicks via your PC.And not to forget the simplicity of switching from DVB-S to DVB-T, DVB-C and back! Linux-based receivers become powerful asnever before!

-Unfortunately, still some things need to b e improved. USB inter-

face cant be called user-friendly, you cant use a USB device for PVR recording, plus, if Windows is your operation system, theremay be problems with accessing your USB dongle formatted inExt3 by the receiver. It would also be nice to add a possibility toenter VHF/UHF channels in the DVB-T mode to help the begin-ners.

ious settings, without the needto endlessly browse throughthe OSD menu with the remotecontrol. Parameters of the cur-rently selected channe l are dis-played in the upper part of thepage. You can see the currentand next program names, cur-rent channels SNR, AGC andBER, as well as its Video andAudio PIDs.

Downloading the PVR record-ings from AB IP Box 350PrimePVR to your computer is alsoperfectly simple. In the web

interface, use the Movies menu, then select the programyoud like to download and clickthe Download button. Andif you prefer the FTP, use thesame IP address, same UserIDand Password, then just go tothe hdd\movie directory. Plainand simple!

TerrestrialReceptionAs weve already mentioned,

besides satellite reception, AB

IP Box 350Prime PVR can beused to watch digital terrestrialtransmissions in DVB-T. Plug-and-play tuners, offered bythe manufacturer, are veryeasy to install just like replac-ing a regular network card withanother. Just open the case,remove one screw and replacethe card thats it!

Enigma software, installedon AB IP Box 350Prime PVR bydefault, completely supportssuch plug and play technol-ogy. It detects the new tunerautomatically and changes themenus accordingly. For exam-ple, the transponder scanscreen no longer expects thefrequency in MHz, but in kHz,instead of Symbol Rate and FEC

youll nd Constellation andBandwidth. Unfortunately, itsnot possible to enter channelnumbers directly. For beginnersit might take time to nd theproper frequency equivalentfor a particular VHF/UHF chan-nel. But other than that, chan-nel scan ends in a ash, andyou can already enjoy the pro-gramming from the nearby TVtower in perfect digital quality!Zapping is as fast as with sat-ellite reception, EPG, Teletext,and all other features youreused to are also available in

DVB-T. For AB IP Box 350PrimePVR it doesnt matter, wherethe signal comes from. It willprocess it and produce a crys-tal clear picture, regardless, if it came from the satellite, ortraveled a shorter distance,from your local TV tower.

Certainly, the DVB-C tunerworks the same. AB IP Box350Prime PVR offers you touse all three DVB variants, bysatellite, terrestrial, and viacable. A very thought throughconcept!
