Athletics Philosophy and Values
Bob Ridder was named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District in 2007
The Intercollegiate Athletics Program at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville has been developed with the belief that intercollegiate sports, subscribing to the principles of good sportsmanship, rules compliance and integrity are benefi cial activities which contribute to the physical, intellectual and social experiences of the entire University community. Intercollegiate Athletics should complement the instructional, research, and service programs of the University and must function within the framework of the University’s overall goals. In harmony with the stated mission of the University, the goals of Intercollegiate Athletics are to enhance the physical and intellectual abilities of those participating in the program and to provide for the physical and social welfare of our student-athletes, as well as to provide spectator benefi ts for the University community and the community-at-large. The recognition that the goals of the Athletics Program are integrated into the goals of the general academic program should guide the activities of those responsible for the conduct of Intercollegiate Athletics. SIUE Athletics must enhance, not detract, from the University’s educational program. Intercollegiate Athletics is intended to provide students with opportunities to enhance their education, to represent their University and to participate in athletics while developing skill and understanding. Participation in the Intercollegiate Athletics Program is always secondary to the academic obligation of the student. To this end, it is the responsibility of those administering the program to schedule the length of playing seasons, the frequency of practice sessions and the number of contests so that they shall not unreasonably confl ict with students’ obligations to attend class regularly; to study; to develop their intellectual, moral and social faculties; and to graduate from the University as educated men and women.
Higher EducationNo goal of ours exceeds the mandate to educate and graduate the student-athlete. We are dedicated to being consistent with the educational purpose of the University.
Rules and RegulationsWe are dedicated to enforcing adherence to the rules and regulations of the NCAA by our student-athletes, coaches and administrators.
Pursuit of ExcellenceIntercollegiate Athletics, with its emphasis on excellence at all levels of play, provides opportunities for undergraduate/graduate students to understand the rewards that come from dedication to a larger purpose and develop their personal, physical and intellectual skills.
CitizenshipWe believe that the values of citizenship are realized through sportsmanship and ethical play in athletics. We are committed to teaching our student-athletes essential skills that will provide for a lifetime of contributions to their community, state and nation.
Amateur SportsmanshipParticipation in amateur sports provides the student-athlete with opportunities to experience and develop life skills in the areas of leadership, discipline, teamwork, goal-setting, self-respect and respect for others.
SIUE Athletics Values
SIUE Athletics PhilosophyIntercollegiate Athletics should complement the instructional, research, and service programs of the University and must function within the framework of the University’s overall goals.

Housing at SIUE All residence halls at SIUE are set up in suite-style living, with four persons per suite, two persons per room and four persons sharing a bathroom. Each carpeted living unit is furnished with two beds (with extra long mattresses), two desks and two dressers. Beds are bunkable and raise up high enough for additional storage space. Each room contains two active data jacks with access to the campus network and one active telephone jack, with the option to purchase a second line. All rooms are equipped with basic expanded cable, temperature controls for comfort, smoke alarms and sprinklers. Each wing in the residence hall features 24-hour study and social lounges. Social lounges contain a microwave, sink and television and are great areas to meet community members and relax. Moreover, each hall has a 24-hour laundry facility, 24-hour computer lab and Learning Resource Center. Evergreen Hall is SIUE’s newest residential facility, having opened in August 2007. Home to upperclass residents, it features apartment- and suite-style living in a residence hall environment. Students choose between various fl oor plans, most of which include private bedrooms. This facility houses a multifunction room, meeting rooms and a fi tness center. Evergreen Hall is located across from the Art & Design Building at the corner of Circle Drive and Whiteside Road. It is home to the Second Year Experience Program, where second-year residents can continue to develop their leadership and academic study skills.
Bluff Hall opened August 2001. This building is located directly across from the Engineering and Art & Design buildings and houses traditionally-aged freshmen. The activity wing boasts a multifunction room, Learning Resource Center, a classroom and a 24-hour computer lab. If you need a snack, you can always purchase grab-and-go items from the Bluff Hall Cafe. Bluff Hall is home to Focused Interest Communities.
Prairie Hall opened to freshmen students in August 1998. This hall houses traditionally-aged freshmen. Residents living in Prairie are encouraged to participate in the Freshmen Horizons Program--a program designed to help students be successful in their academic career, adjust to their new social environment, get involved on campus and become involved in a dynamic and caring community. Prairie Hall has a multifunction room, Learning Resource Center, a classroom and 24-hour computer lab.
Woodland Hall was opened in 1994 and houses all levels of undergraduate students. Woodland Hall is home to the Residence Housing Association, which provides funding for programs to the Hall Councils and residents in University Housing. This group also acts as an advisory board to the Director of University Housing. The Woodland Hall activity wing accommodates student activities in the multifunction, conference and meeting rooms. If you need a quick breakfast or dinner item, pick something up from the Woodland Cart, open limited hours Mon.– Fri.
Dining Services serves the entire campus community, including the residence hall students, faculty and staff. The facilities include the Center Court Food Court, The Den sports-themed dining area, table service dining at the University Restaurant and the Commons Grill, a satellite dining area in the Cougar Village Commons Building.
Cougar Village has 496 student apartments in 62 buildings. It is home to single students, graduate students and family residents. Traditional freshman are not allowed to reside in Cougar Village unless they are contracted family residents. As of Fall 2000, all apartments were fully renovated, which brought technological updates and a more comfortable atmosphere to the apartments. Cougar Village is just a short walk or shuttle ride from classrooms and main campus buildings. Applicants may choose a shared bedroom (two people in a bedroom designed for two) or a private bedroom (one person in a bedroom designed for one). Private bedrooms are in very limited supply.

Chancellor Vaughn Vandegrift Dr. Vaughn Vandegrift was appointed the seventh chancellor of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville on July 1, 2004. Emphasizing teaching, research and public service programs, SIUE is a fully-accredited public institution—beautifully situated in Edwardsville on 2,660 acres just 25 miles from St. Louis—awarding degrees in 44 baccalaureate and 64 master’s programs encompassing the arts and sciences, nursing, education, business, and engineering. The Schools of Pharmacy and Dental Medicine award fi rst professional degrees, the D.M.D. and the Pharm.D. For the fourth consecutive year, SIUE has been heralded by U.S. News and World Report for its Senior Assignment Program, an integrative learning experience required of all seniors prior to graduation. U.S. News lists SIUE among the top 10 public universities in the Midwest-Master’s category for the second consecutive year. The main campus includes University Park, a research park established to enhance economic development. The Edwardsville campus also is supplemented by campuses in East St. Louis and Alton. Since the time of his appointment, Vandegrift has been instrumental in guiding the University toward fulfi llment of its vision to be recognized nationally, as a premier Metropolitan University, for the excellence of its programs and development of professional and community leaders. He developed a plan for achievement of the vision by the year 2015 that combines the values and goals of the University with knowledge gained from his 33-year career in higher education. Vandegrift is a New Jersey native who came to SIUE from Georgia Southern University, a comprehensive, residential university of 16,000 students, where he served as Provost, Vice President for Academic Affairs, Chief Information Offi cer and Professor of Chemistry. His areas of responsibility included six academic colleges, graduate studies, international studies, information technology services, the library, continuing education and public service, a museum, a wildlife education center and a botanical garden. He also served as Dean of the College of Science and Mathematics at Montclair State University in New Jersey, the second largest university in the state of New Jersey. He served as Chairman of the Department of Chemistry at Murray State University in Kentucky, and held earlier faculty positions at Southern Illinois University Carbondale and Illinois State University. Vandegrift has been the author or co-author of grants resulting in more than $3 million in funding from various sources during his career, including support from the Commonwealth of Kentucky, the National Science Foundation, the Fats and Proteins Research Foundation and the AT&T Corporation. He has also been active in working with foundations and donors who have made major gifts in support of the institutions where he has worked. Dr. Vandegrift is author of more than 40 professional publications and presentations including works published in Biochemistry, Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, and Methods in Enzymology.Vandegrift is a member of the American Chemical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Vandegrift currently serves on the Boards of Directors of Leadership Council Southwestern Illinois; University Park, SIUE; Focus St. Louis; St. Louis Regional Commerce and Growth Association; United Way of Greater St. Louis; the Southwestern Illinois Higher Education Consortium (SIHEC); the Southern Illinois Collegiate Common Market (SICCM) and the Executive Council of The Alliance of Edwardsville-Glen Carbon. He has been elected into the honor societies of Omicron Delta Kappa, Sigma Xi, Beta Gamma Sigma and Phi Kappa Phi. He has provided service on boards in support of science education and has been listed in Who’s Who in the East, American Men and Women of Science and Who’s Who in Frontier Science and Technology. He received his Ph.D. from Ohio University in biochemistry, studying the effects of nuclear histone proteins on the conformation of DNA. Dr. Bradley L. Hewitt has served as the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at SIUE since August 2002. Dr. Hewitt served 13 years in numerous positions at SIUE before stepping in as the seventh director of athletics in the school’s history. Hewitt’s charge was to regain SIUE’s storied national success of the 1970s and 1980s (16 national championships) and expand that success across a broad-based athletic program. During his fi ve-year career, 37 Cougar teams have competed in their respective NCAA individual or team championships. Since taking over the program, Hewitt has helped elevate SIUE’s previous best 131st place fi nish in the U.S. Sports Academy Directors’ Cup to a 78th place fi nish in 2004, a 37th place fi nish in 2005, a 4th place fi nish in 2006, and an 11th place fi nish in 2007. For the 2006-07 seasons, the Cougars won both the prestigious Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) All-Sports Trophy and the Commissioner’s Cup. The Cougars won the All-Sports Trophy with 141.5 points, the highest total points recorded in a single season since the award was conceived more than 25 years ago. The Commissioner’s Cup is awarded to the program that produces the overall best fi nish in the league’s seven “core” sports. SIUE posted top fi ve fi nishes in six of the seven sports that count in the Commissioner’s Cup standings, including conference titles in men’s soccer and softball. Also considered are volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, and baseball. The pinnacle of achievement this year was a 2007 national championship in softball—SIUE’s fi rst national championship since May 1989. In 1994, Hewitt, in his role as assistant athletic director, served as the University’s Venue Manager for the United States Olympic Festival-’94 track and fi eld and wrestling events. Since 1994, Hewitt has held several positions at SIUE, including Acting Chief Executive Offi cer of the SIUE Foundation and Acting Vice Chancellor of University Relations (1998-2000), adjunct graduate professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Education (1996-2003), and Assistant Vice Chancellor for University Relations (1994-1998 and 2000-present). From 1995-1998 and 2000-2002, Hewitt was the internal and external liaison for the Vice Chancellor of University Relations, overseeing the operating units of Alumni Services; SIUE Foundation; Public Affairs; Photographic Services; and University Graphics, Publications, and Printing. Hewitt has a diverse background in intercollegiate athletics. Before coming to SIUE, he was the director of sports marketing and associate head football coach at Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa; the recruiting coordinator and assistant football coach at Southern Illinois University Carbondale; and recruiting coordinator, track event manager, and assistant football coach at his alma mater The University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg. Hewitt earned a bachelor’s in mathematics in 1981 from Central Missouri as well as a master’s in athletic administration in 1982. Hewitt completed his doctorate in education at SIUC in 1994. Hewitt has been a highly-active member of the area community serving as a member of the board of directors for the St. Louis Sports Commission since 1999, a member of the board of directors for the Edwardsville-Glen Carbon Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Board of Governors for the Prairie State Games and as a member of the State Games of America Board of Directors. He is presently serving in his second term as a member of the Edwardsville District 7 School Board. In 2006, Hewitt completed the executive management program at the Sports Management Institute, which provides specialized executive management programs for sports management professionals. The Sports Management Institute was developed in 1989 as a joint venture of the athletic departments and business administration schools of the University of Southern California, the University of Notre Dame and the University of North Carolina. Signifi cant fundraising success (especially in facility development) has been a capstone of Hewitt’s professional career. Since 2000 Hewitt was instrumental in securing several multi-million dollar facility gifts and pledges ($10 million plus in total) for the University. These facilities gifts helped build the 12,000 sq. ft. Birger Hall (SIUE’s Foundation and Alumni Building), the 1,500 seat SimmonsCooper Baseball Complex, and the 5,000 sq. ft. SIUE softball stadium/clubhouse. He was a signifi cant member of the SIUE Foundation team that saw exponential growth in the Foundation’s annual giving campaign and endowment from 1995-2002. Since rejoining Cougar Athletics in 2002, he has focused on increasing the athletic endowment, doubling the number of endowed scholarships. Hewitt and his wife Kay, a professional educator, reside in Edwardsville. Their daughter Loren is a 2007 graduate of SIUE and tennis alumnae, and their son Matthew is a junior at the University of Illinois majoring in mechanical engineering.

Head Coach Kevin Kalish Kevin Kalish begins his fi rst year as a head coach for the SIUE men’s soccer team. Kalish was promoted to the head coaching position following the retirement of the revered head coach Ed Huneke. Huneke fi nished his career as the winningest coach in SIUE history compiling 251 victories in 22 years at the helm for the Cougars. After eight years of assistant coaching experience under Huneke, Kalish will take over a program that has produced 21 NCAA Tournament appearances, eight Final Four years (’72, ’75, ’77, ’79, ’82, ’01, ’04, ’05), two national runners-up (1975, 2004) and two national championships (1972 and 1979). Since Kalish arrived in 2000 he has seen the Cougars into the NCAA tournament on six occasions, including two Final Fours in 2001 and 2005 and a runner-up in 2004. The Cougars soccer team has also posted a winning percentage of .754 with a record of 118-32-19, including a 72-9-9 GLVC record since Kalish became a part of the Cougar coaching staff. In regular season conference play since 2000, Kalish has assisted Huneke to a pair of third place fi nishes, two second place fi nishes and four GLVC season titles. In addition, the Cougars have fi nished runner up in the GLVC tournament on two occasions in 2001 and 2003 and won the tournament twice in 2002 and 2006. Kalish is also largely responsible for the growth and maturity of several Cougar players and has assisted in the development of 12 All-American players for SIUE including four this past season Dustin Attarian, Greg Crook, Zach Bauer and Randy Roy. SIUE Director of Athletics Dr. Brad Hewitt said he is very confi dent in hiring Kalish as the third head coach in Cougar men’s soccer history. “Ed has stood the test of time for a program that started a tradition of excellence at SIUE. His commitment to his student-athletes and the soccer community has been outstanding throughout his career,” he said. “Kevin Kalish will ensure this program will continue on that course. We are very fortunate to have the opportunity to hire Kevin. He is a leader in the soccer community nationally, not just in the St. Louis area.” Kalish brings a wealth of soccer talent and coaching experience to the Cougars.
He is a graduate of Saint Louis University (SLU), where he was a GTE Academic All-American and First Team NSCAA All-American for the soccer team. In 1999, he was named SLU’s Most Outstanding Male Athlete and played in the National College Senior All-Star Bowl. He was Conference USA Player of the Year in his senior season at SLU. He was also a fi rst team All-Midwest and All-Conference selection during his junior and senior seasons at SLU where he led the Billikens to the NCAA Soccer Final Four. He was also twice named All-Big East while at Connecticut. He has been drafted by three professional soccer teams. In 1998, he was drafted by the St. Louis Ambush of the National Professional Soccer League and, in 1999, he was drafted by the Nashville Metros of the United Soccer League and was the third pick of the Kansas City Wizards in the MLS Super Draft. Kalish, who recently was named to SLU’s Athletic Hall of Fame, has been coaching since he left the fi eld at SLU. In 1999, he joined the SLU coaching staff as an assistant and then joined Coach Huneke and the Cougar staff the following year. Kalish earned a bachelor’s from SLU in 1999 and master’s in Kinesiology from SIUE in August 2006. Kalish and his wife, Sarah, have two children, Sam and Liam.

2008 Season Preview First-year head coach Kevin Kalish has a little different approach to preparing for the 2008 Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men’s soccer program. An assistant coach for the last eight seasons, Kalish enters this season with a talented group of players looking to take on the new challenge set before them as they make the transition to Division I competition. “Our schedule this season will include a number of quality opponents,” Kalish said. “We want to use this season as a foundation for future success.” SIUE’s fi rst challenge against a top NCAA Division I squad is Saturday at 7 p.m. against Bradley, which is ranked 21st in the preseason NSCAA/NCAA Division I poll. The game will be played at the Scott Gallagher Soccer Complex in St. Louis. “Playing Bradley will be a good test for us,” Kalish said. “It allows us to measure ourselves against a nationally-ranked opponent.” Kalish will send senior Nick Frasca (St. Charles, Mo.) to tend goal. Coming off a redshirt season, Frasca recorded three
shutouts during the 2006 season. “Frasca brings a lot of valuable experience to our team this season in goal. He is one of our only players returning with Final Four experience,” Kalish said. Challenging for playing time will be freshman newcomer Nick Collico (Florissant, Mo.). “Collico has been working hard and is looking to set himself apart this season.” Kalish said. In the backfi eld, junior Tim Lindsay (Florissant, Mo.) started four matches last season. “Lindsay is a versatile player who will play a signifi cant role on the backline this year,” Kalish said. The duo of junior Mike Jones (St. Peters, Mo.) and sophomore Ryan Wilhelm (St. Louis) will solidify the center of the backfi eld. “Both players are returnees with the ability to transition well to the Division I level,” Kalish said. Freshman Nash Maduekwe (St. Louis) will look to break into the lineup this season. Junior Myles Hensler (Maryville) also will be returning in the backfi eld. Hensler started 15 games last season and will be asked to continue to join in the attack from his left back position. In the midfi eld, junior Tim Weir (Florissant, Mo.) scored two goals last season. He gives the Cougars options at both midfi eld and in the backfi eld. Kalish also is expecting senior newcomer Nick Bigogno (St. Louis) to play a role in the team’s success after transferring from Columbia College. “Bigogno is going to play a big role in our
success this season because he brings a high level of intensity to our team.” Kalish said. The Cougars also have returning midfi elder Benny Jeffery (Florissant, Mo.), who started all 18 matches in 2007. Chris Hopping (St. Charles, Mo.) enters his sophomore season after playing 14 games last season. Bob Ridder (Quincy) fi gures to make his fi nal season as a Cougar a strong one. The senior scored four goals and six assists last season and was named to the ESPN The Magazine men’s soccer Academic All-District second team. “Bob seems to have a knack for scoring goals, something we hope will continue this season,” said Kalish. SIUE has two freshmen vying for playing time at midfi eld. Both highly-touted prep players, Kalish looks to have Brian Groark (Florissant, Mo.) and Kyle O’Brien (Garden Grove, Calif.) up to speed quickly. The Cougars hold a great deal of experience up front with the return of Matt Ryan Wilhelm

2008 Season Preview
First-year head coach Kevin Kalish will put his Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men’s soccer team through a rigorous test for the 2008 season. The Cougars will play 14 games against NCAA Division I competition. SIUE, in year one of reclassifi cation, will face two teams which competed in the 2007 College Cup. “These games will provide our players with the opportunity to measure themselves against some of the best teams in Division I,” said Kalish, who becomes only the third coach to take the reign of the Cougar men’s soccer program. When SIUE opens practice on Thursday, Aug. 14, Kalish will put the Cougars through a preseason to ready them for the fi rst Division I schedule at SIUE since 1995. The Cougars open up the season with an exhibition game at Korte Stadium on Aug. 19 at 7 p.m. against Missouri-St. Louis. “We look forward to the challenge of competing at the Division I level again,” said Kalish. SIUE faces Bradley, a national quarterfi nalist in the College Cup last season, at 7 p.m. at the Scott Gallagher
Tim Weir
Harris (St. Charles, Mo.). Harris scored three goals last season. “We look for Matt to contribute a lot this season.” Kalish said. Coach Kalish is looking for a good duo of sophomore Chris Anzalone (St. Peters, Mo.) who will be coming off a redshirt year and newcomer Jack Twellman (St. Louis). “Twellman is intelligent, crafty and plays with good energy. He plays well with his back to the goal,” Kalish said. Kalish also announced he intends to redshirt fi ve players this season, including goalkeeper Scott Meyer (Ballwin, Mo.), senior forward Dustin Attarian (St. Louis), junior back Randy Roy (St. Louis), junior forward Kevin Bielicki (St. Louis), and senior back Zach Bauer (St. Charles, Mo.). Roy, Attarian, and Bauer all were named All-Americans in Division II last season. The Cougars will be on the road for most of the season. Their three home games, which will be played at Korte Stadium, are McKendree on Oct. 10, Jefferson College on Oct. 15 and an exhibition against the SIUE Alumni on Oct. 17.

2007 Season Recap SIUE began the 2007 season with high hopes and were the favorites to repeat as the Great Lakes Valley Conference champions in the preseason coaches poll. SIUE Coach Ed Huneke returned six starters from the 2006 season’s championship squad, including All-GLVC honorees Randy Roy and Zach Bauer. The two talented backs anchored a defense that surrendered just a 0.97 goals against average in 2006. Also included in the Cougars’ returnees for 2007 were the top three goal-scorers. Junior forward Dustin Attarian #21 registered a team-high eight goals to go along with six assists in 2006. Senior Ross Beveridge and sophomore Kevin Bielicki each had posted seven goals in 2006. The Cougars began the year with a No. 7 national ranking and with the knowledge that it would be the fi nal season for the winningest coach in SIUE soccer history, Ed Huneke. The preseason began with a plethora of promise as the No. 7 Cougars defeated Creighton 1-0 in Omaha, Neb. The Cougars followed that performance up by blanking the Tulsa soccer team 1-0 at Korte Stadium. “And Creighton is picked to win the Missouri Valley this season,” noted Coach Ed Huneke. Following the exhibition wins over Tulsa and Creighton, the Cougars traveled to Memphis to take on Christian Brothers University but failed to score on just two shots on goal. The Cougars took the fi eld at Korte Stadium Sept. 7 against Kentucky Wesleyan and Sept. 9 against Southern Indiana, marking the beginning of GLVC play for the 2007 season. Both the Kentucky Wesleyan Panthers and USI Screaming Eagles were sent home with 5-0 and 4-2 losses, respectively. The next road trip took SIUE west across the border through Missouri for the weekend to take on Drury University in Springfi eld on Friday, September 14, and face off against Rockhurst University in Kansas City on Sunday. SIUE outshot Drury 20-2 as the No. 24-ranked Cougars shut out Drury 2-0. Drury managed just two shots off SIUE’s defense. After two overtimes and 110 minutes of play against the No. 13 Rockhurst Hawks on Sunday, September 16, the game ended knotted up in a 1-1 tie. After the weekend SIUE was 3-1-1 overall and 3-0-1 in league play. SIUE returned to Korte Stadium the following weekend to take on UW Parkside and Lewis. The No. 21-ranked Cougars men’s soccer team dominated UW-Parkside 5-0. Two days later on a beautiful Sunday afternoon the SIUE Cougars improved their record to 5-1-1 overall and 5-0-1 in the GLVC by defeating Lewis, the eventual GLVC tournament champions, 2-1. The fi rst stop of SIUE’s next road trip landed them in Highland Hts., Ky. which proved to be an exciting although disappointing one for the Cougars.
NKU’s Braden Bishop scored on a penalty kick in the second OT period as No. 2-ranked Northern Kentucky gave the Cougars their fi rst GLVC loss. Bob Ridder was the hero for the day as the Cougars made their last stop for the weekend in Louisville, Ky., to play Bellarmine. Ridder scored his third goal of the season at 32:29 and then assisted on SIUE’s second and fourth goal of the game as No. 15 SIUE dominated the Knights 4-0. As the season moved into October, SIUE’s record stood at 6-2-1 overall and 6-1-1 in the GLVC. Greg Crook picked up his third shutout of the season on Oct. 5 as SIUE blanked rival Missouri-St. Louis 2-0. SIUE would pull out a 2-1 victory over Missouri-Rolla after the Cougars took the lead when Matt Harris took a rebound from Ridder and buried it at 77:29. Following the weekend, the Cougars, sat at 8-2-1 overall and 8-1-1 in GLVC play. SIUE had won three straight games and looked forward to facing Truman State at Korte Stadium on Oct. 12. While Truman State was not part of the GLVC, Huneke still considered the Bulldogs an important test for the season. Crook proved he was up to the test by posting his fourth shutout on the season as the No. 15 ranked Cougars defeated Truman State 1-0. On Senior Day Sunday, SIUE men’s soccer triumphed over Quincy 3-0, marking its fi nal regular season home game of the season. The No. 15 Cougars collected their fi fth straight victory and seventh shutout of the season improving 10-2-1 overall and 9-1-1 in GLVC play. SIUE held at second place behind undefeated and top-ranked Northern Kentucky with only two games remaining in the regular season at Saint Joseph’s and at Indianapolis. The No. 12 SIUE men’s soccer Cougars cruised into Rensselaer, Ind. to take on Saint Joseph’s on Oct. 19, riding a fi ve-game winning streak. However, the Cougars watched its fi ve-game winning streak come to an abrupt halt as Saint Joseph’s upset SIUE 1-0 on Greg Gehrig’s score at 19:08. It was Saint Joseph’s
only shot of the fi rst half. With the SIUE loss and a Northern Kentucky victory Friday, the Cougars locked themselves into the No. 2 seed for the GLVC Tournament. The last stop of the regular season landed the Cougars in Indianapolis to take on the Greyhounds. A long soccer weekend came to an end Sunday with a 1-1 tie for SIUE men’s soccer against Indianapolis. The Cougars, 10-3-2 overall, fi nished the regular season with a 9-2-2 mark in GLVC play. The Cougars would match up against Indianapolis again. The only difference was the venue, but this time the game was played at SIUE’s Korte Stadium. Anything can happen in the post season and especially with penalty kicks which is exactly what SIUE men’s soccer team found out Sunday. The Greyhounds edged SIUE 10-9 in penalty kicks after the two teams battled to a 0-0 tie. While the game goes into the record books as a tie, one team had to advance in the tournament. The two teams were 4-4 after the fi rst fi ve rounds. Indianapolis hit eight shots in a row, including the eventual successful score in the 11th round. Coach Huneke’s Cougars’ performance during the regular season was enough to merit them a bid to the fi rst round of the NCAA Division II Championships, where they were set to face off against Lewis. SIUE forward Kevin Bielicki scored in both halves against Lewis, and Crook, ranked No. 2 nationally in goals against average, collected four saves as SIUE won 2-1 in the fi rst round of the NCAA Division II Championships. SIUE, 11-3-3 overall, advanced to play Northern Kentucky in the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional title game. Sunday’s game marked SIUE’s fourth consecutive Great Lakes Regional fi nals appearance. It was also a rematch of the 2006 Great Lakes Regional fi nal which the Cougars fell to the Norse 3-2 in OT. In the 2007 NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Final history would once again repeat itself when the SIUE men’s soccer season came to a close with a 1-0 loss again at the hands of Northern Kentucky. It was a bittersweet ending for Huneke and the Cougars, 11-4-3. SIUE outshot Northern Kentucky 12-11 but couldn’t fi nd the back of the net. Crook, who was named the Most Outstanding Defensive Player of the Great Lakes Regional Tournament, fi nished with seven saves. Zach Bauer, Kevin Bielicki and Dustin Attarian also were named to the All-Tournament team. Sunday’s game marked the end of an era in Cougar soccer. It was known as “Ed’s Era” in 1986 when Coach Ed Huneke was named the head coach of the Cougars when he took the position after the passing of Hall of Fame Coach Bob Guelker. Huneke, who fi nished with a career coaching record of 251-156-34, passed on the program to SIUE assistant Coach Kevin Kalish.

1972, 1979 National Champions
1972 Southern Illinois University Edwardsville won the fi rst-ever college division national championship, defeating Oneonta College 1-0 in the title game. SIUE went undefeated that season for an 11-0-3 mark. The three ties came from rivals Western Illinois, Saint Louis and Akron. The tie to Akron was quickly avenged in the opening game of the NCAA Championships as the Cougars rolled to a 3-2 win. Chris Carenza, the brother of SIUE’s all-time leading scorer John Carenza, posted 12 goals and three assists to lead the Cougars. Tom Twellman, who had four goals and two assists, was named SIUE’s Most Valuable Athlete. Kevin Howe would be named the team MVP. In goal, Rick Benben allowed just 10 goals and grabbed 85 saves.
1979 Proving that friends could together win a national championship, SIUE grabbed its only NCAA Division I crown behind a plethora of talented players, many of whom moved on to highly successful professional careers. It was the second national title for future Hall of Fame Coach Bob Guelker. The crafty coach got a hat trick in the championship game from Matt Malloy as SIUE defeated Clemson 3-2 for the title. After winning its fi rst two games, SIUE lost its next two at Seattle Pacifi c and San Francisco. There was team dissension, but the Cougars rallied to go undefeated in its next 20 games, a school record. One of SIUE’s all-time best goal scorers, Don Ebert, scored a school-record 22 goals that season and added 10 assists. Malloy had 11 goals but didn’t get into double-digit scoring until the title game. SIUE also had outstanding goalkeeping, with Ed Gettemeier and Mark Downar sharing time in the nets. Downar allowed 11 goals and Gettemeier gave up just nine. For Bob Guelker, it also was special to have his son, Tim, on the team. His three assists to Malloy in the championship game made Dad proud. The Cougars ran the tables on college soccer’s premier teams. Saint Louis was defeated in the fi rst round of the playoffs 2-1 at what would later be renamed Bob Guelker Field. SIUE followed with a 2-0 win over Southern Methodist and a 4-2 revenge victory over San Francisco. The Cougars then took Penn State 2-1 and closed it all with the victory over Clemson. After the season, many continued to play for SIUE. Others moved on. Thirteen players would eventually play soccer professionally, a sign of just how good this team really was.
