AUTOPANANDPRESETTOURSIt is important to remember thatAuto Pan is not designed forcontinual 24 hour usage as thisplaces undue strain on the Pangearing. We do not recommendthat the Auto Pan mode is used formore than 12 hours each day asany failure of Pan gearing due tothe head being left in permanentauto pan is not covered bymanufacturers’ warranties. It isalso worth considering using morecameras instead of Auto Pan as theincreased reliability and lower costof CCD cameras can make this amore viable option.This is also applicable to pan andtilt heads fitted with presets. Theseare often left on a permanent ‘tour’and this can lead to prematurefailure of the pan/tilt unit and againis not covered by manufacturers'warranty.Please telephone our technicaldepartment for further advice.

WASHERS AND WIPERS FIXEDSYSTEMSWipers are often specified on fixedcamera installations whichnecessitates the inclusion ofhardwire or telemetry control toswitch the wipers on and off. This isnot usually cost effective and oftenunnecessary unless the angle ofthe camera housing means that theview is often obscured by rain or issited in a dirty location. Wipers arenot normally essential to a fixedcamera system and are bestavoided.

TIPSCare should always be taken wheninstalling wipers to ensure that thecamera does not view the blade.Simply switch them on and off afew times to find the ‘worst case’park position before installing thecamera. Washer units can pump anominal head of up to 10 metres,although it is best to keep this to aminimum for reliable operation.You should never install thereservoir above the housing as thiscan lead to the entire contentsbeing syphoned away. Rememberthat washer units will also requirere-filling on a regular basis.

However itmust remain the responsibility ofthe installer to ensure the monitorand mount are secured safely at thetime of installation

INFRA-RED LAMPSChoiceofFilter/PowerRatingInfra-red lamps are available indifferent powers and with either715nM or 830nM filters. The choiceof filter is dependant on acombination of factors:a) can the user accept that the lightcan be easily seen. 715nM lampslook like a red traffic light atnight.

IR is sometimes called black light and liesapproximately between 700nM and1,000nM1 (1 micron). The eye cannotefficiently see beyond 730nM whilst CCDCameras can see up to 1000nM – and thisenables the use of semi-covert and covertIR applications.Diagram A demonstrateswhat the human eye can see (the photopiccurve) and what a normal monochromecamera can see (CCD), also illustrated onthis diagram is the increased sensitivity ofspecialist IR sensitive cameras (extendedIR CCD).Notice that the camera sensitivity drops asthe wavelength increases. This means thatthe camera sees less of the lightdistributed on the scene.There is often a requirement for semi-covert or covert installations. Graphs B, Cand D demonstrate a 730nM filter, 830nMand 950nM filter. The 730nM filter willglow similar to a traffic light, an 830nMfilter will give off a dull red glow only justvisible to the human eye. The 950nM willappear covert, with no glow visible.The key factors in choosing the type of IRlamp relate to the required viewingdistance and scene. As demonstrated inthe diagrams below the sensitivity of thecamera is an important element,additionally the lens sensitivity and typeplay an important role.When designing CCTV systems foreffective 24-hour surveillance three issuesare central: the camera, the lens andillumination.

CameraIt can be a minefield for installers facedwith impressive claims of zero or low lux2cameras, but in essence, without lightthere can be no picture.All CCD cameras offer some degree of IRresponse though some have enhanced IRperformance that make them moresuitable for longer range applications orfor use with low power IR sources such asLEDs (Light Emitting Diodes). The latestchip sets (such as EXview™ and EXwave™)offer excellent low noise, high resolution,and low smear characteristics togetherwith excellent IR response.Day/night cameras are intended to providethe best solution for 24 hour surveillance– colour by day and monochrome /IRsensitive by night. There are differentforms of day/night cameras with someincorporating optical filters that are

automatically moved over the CCD sensorfor daytime/colour operation – IR opticalfilters (cut filters) are used as IR lightdistorts the colour display – and removedduring night-time/monochrome tomaximise the low light sensitivity byallowing IR light to pass to the CCD. Othercamera designs incorporate specialisedfilters which do not move but which haveboth good colour performance and IRsensitivity.

LensAt night, it is essential to maximise thelight gathering capability of the lens (i.e.have the lowest `f` stop) but this willreduce the depth of field of the picture,which may cause focusing problems. Anauto iris lens will naturally open to itsmaximum aperture (lowest `f` stop3) inlow light operation but on a fixed lensthere may need to be a compromisebetween the low light operation and itsdepth of field focussing.Daylight and IR light do not focus on theCCD at the same point because of thedifferent ways in which the wavelengths oflight pass that through the lens.This may cause a focus shift betweendaytime and IR operation. The degree offocus shift may depend on a variety offactors depending on the quality of lenses,the wavelength of the IR filter (830nM &950nM) will give a more exaggerated focusshift and the IR response of the camera.Some manufacturers have developed arange of lenses with zero focus shiftbetween daytime and IR performance.This is of considerable interest to CCTVsystem designers – especially forunmanned or non-telemetry controlledinstallations.

IlluminationThe key to a successful night scheme ishaving sufficient light, the right quality oflight and the right control over the light.The best solution is IR lighting at thecamera head controlled by eithertelemetry (for manual switching on/off) orphotocell (for automatic operation whenthe light drops below a certain level).The viewing distances that can beachieved depend upon camera and lenstype and these can affect systemperformance by as much as 50%compared with daylight operation. Allcameras are less efficient at 850nM andachievable distances can be reduced by at

least 25%, whilst at 950nM theperformance of many camera/lenscombination can be reduced by over 60%compared with daylight conditions.When choosing an IR lamp, considerationshould be given to the lamp’s ability toprovide even illumination. This ensuresthat the returned radiated energy to thecamera is the same for wherever thesubject is in the scene and avoids whiteout on the screen. Additional factors suchas bulb life and running costs should alsobe taken into account. In general, IRlamps driven via the mains tend to haveconsiderably lower bulb life and higherrunning costs than low voltage IR lamps.It is also important to match the cameralens to the beam pattern of the infra redlight. Mismatching in this area can lead toeither poor picture quality or loss of IRefficiency. For example, a camera with a8mm lens on a 1/2 inch CCD would give a43 degree horizontal spread(approximately) but if a traditional spotand flood approach was used here, theresulting picture would more then likelyhave a white circle in the centre of thescreen. This is because a spot lens willonly illuminate a small selection of thefield of view. The flood lens may bewasting 30% of its energy outside the fieldof view.Solid-state devices such as LEDs (LightEmitting Diode) bring major advantages,including lower maintenance levels andlower power consumption.The LED units can provide up to 10 years’life. However, they provide less power onscene then halogen IR lamps. LED’s arebeginning to make a bigger impact on theCCTV scene because of the increased IRsensitivity of emerging monochromecameras.Certain manufacturers combine thecamera, lens and LED illumination intoone package. These are sometimestermed IDN products, which meansIntegrated Day and Night (IR)performance. These products sense theambient light levels and switch on the IRwhen insufficient light is available.However, the achievable distance with IDNproducts is usually less then 50m so it isonly suitable for certain applications.

HOW TO SPECIFY LIGHTING1. Infra-Red or White-Light?Identifying the purpose of the system identifies the type of light to use.

Infra-Red light provides greater distance, a varying degree of invisibility (depending on the exact wavelength) and nolight pollution. Infra-Red is light designed only to be used by CCTV cameras.

White-Light provides the opportunity to illuminate an area for pedestrians, staff or vehicles in addition to the CCTVsystem. It can also be used as a visual deterrent, turned on when an intruder is detected by a PIR.

2. AngleThe illumination should ideallymatch the angle the camera / lens isset-to in order to provide bestperformance. If not, and too narrowan illumination angle is chosen, thecamera will simply see a bright spotin the middle of the scene and thecontrast between light and darkareas on scene will be too great toprovide high quality images.Illumination which is too widewastes energy and reducesachievable distance.

Technical IssueThe adoption of varifocal lenses has caused difficulty in specifying lighting. With varifocal lenses the exact FOV is oftenonly established on site through trial and error making exact matching to fixed angle lighting impossible in advance.Raytec provide a range of Adaptive Illumination™ varifocal lighting allowing the output angle of an illuminator to beadjusted on site to match the set-up of a varifocal lens.

CCTV LIGHTING FOR DOMES

Wide Angle LightingAchieving 360° degreelighting for domes hastraditionally been veryexpensive, requiring multipleilluminators. However, wenow offer a series of wideangle illuminators fromRaytec purpose designed forfully functional domes. Thenew wide angle illuminatorsare available in RAYMAX(Infra-Red) and RAYLUX(White-Light) variations andare fitted with AdaptiveIllumination™ providing vari-focal lighting. AdaptiveIllumination™ is a newconcept introduced andpatented by Raytec allowingthe installer to adjust thehorizontal beam angle onsite to match the specificneeds of the installation.
