Newsletter FinanceI’m pleased to be able to report that the organisations in our villages have donated sufficient funds to keep the newsletter going for the next six months.Rather than rely solely on our splendid advertisers and local organisations, one of our community has suggested that individuals may be willing to sponsor an edition with a mention to that effect (or anonymously). Looking to the the future we need between £60 and £80 for each edition but would be pleased to receive any amount.Please get in touch with the editor if you would like to contribute in this way; either as a one-off or a regular small amount. Also, we’d be delighted if you would be willing to organise a fund-raising event.

Wind turbine at West BeckhamAs many of you may be aware Genatec Ltd (created by John and David Mack from Bodham) are proposing to erect a single 800kW wind turbine at West Beckham. From ground to top of blade will be 90m (for scale, the same size as the Swaffham turbine). This is to be located adjacent to the radio mast on the high ground at Cox’s point (between West Beckham and Baconsthorpe). This will dominate the skyline to the north from most of the benefice (and beyond), in particular Plumstead and Baconsthorpe.

Should you have any objections to this project these should be forwarded to the planning department at North Norfolk District Council or your local councillor at the earliest opportunity.

We are very sorry that Michael Cartwright has been so unwell and send our love and prayers for a speedy recovery. We hope that it won’t be long before he is back leading our worship, rehearsing the choir, and being his usual dynamic self in each of our parishes.

From the PewAlready the churches in these rural communities are planning for Harvest Festivals. Surrounded as we are by farms and farming, many people see these festivals as a much- loved traditional part of rural life. They provide us with an opportunity, should we so wish, to acknowledge the partnership between God and his creation and the work and expertise of our farmers, that produces our food.

Although we have six churches in the benefice, it was felt some years ago that a festival in each was not viable. Therefore some churches join together and three festivals are held each year.

This year they will be on the following Sundays:

Wild Excuses!Sometimes, you don’t have to go very far at all to watch nature. For some obscure reason, some large plant tubs in the garden have become highly sought after housing for wildlife. I woke at 5 am one morning to see a family of stoats in the largest tub, sitting like meerkats, staring at me. I avoided weeding that area.

The next day there was an explosion of activity in another tub. Moorhens, who visit from a nearby pond, had set up home. I avoided weeding that area.

At around the same time I nearly had an accident whilst in the bathroom, as a red-legged partridge tried to escape from one of the stoats and came in through the bathroom window! I avoided weeding that area.

Not to be outdone, the visiting Mallard ducks brought their brood into the kitchen. A frog set up home in the outside dog bowl. Now,

my dog is very kind to our wildlife. So he ran away (not too far). It was all too much.

Many species seem to have had two broods this year, but the changeable weather has meant that only the strongest survived. We

hear of a decline in many bird species, like the house sparrow and even blue tits. The bird feeders around these parts seem to have been very busy. If you live near anywhere with conifers present, you may have noticed coal tits and long-tailed tits as well as blue tits on your bird feeders. A tiny

tinkling call may indicate goldcrests, one of our smallest birds. A nuthatch regularly comes to my feeders (look for a bird feeding upside down). These are woodland birds, frequenting gardens more regularly.

Because of lack of garden attention, I found a grass snake whilst thinking of mowing the lawn. I avoided lawn mowing.

I’d better let the ducks back in so that I can avoid housework. J

Common spotted orchidHaving come back from Orkney where orchids are so common they pop up all over the place (even in people’s lawns) it was lovely to find this orchid by the roadside in Hempstead. Ed

Baconsthorpe – Sugar-Beet Harvesting 2VvK7

Do you remember sugar-beet harvesting the hard way? Growing sugar beet has changed out of all recognition over the past fifty odd years. At that time the job was very labour intensive. First, the young plants had to be singled by hoeing and, later, they were hoed again to remove weeds (scoring).

Our accompanying photograph shows this in progress in a small field to the rear of ‘The Hollies’ in Baconsthorpe c1955. You can just see Baconsthorpe Hall in the background.

When mature, the beet were ploughed or squeezed out of the ground, knocked together to remove soil and topped with a hook. They would then be loaded by hand onto a tumbril and put into a clamp protected by straw. Later they would be loaded onto a lorry (again by hand) for shipment to the factory. Quite a big proportion of beet were actually sent by rail and the small station at Thursford handled the largest tonnage in the whole of the country. This was all hard manual work much of it carried out at the worst time of the year weather wise.

Compared with the highly-mechanised operation of today very little of the old system remains with the possible exception of the amount of mud left on the roads! Arthur Pentney

Mrs Jules Parker of Barningham Rectory had a stall at the Stately Car Boot sale and donated £50 to church funds from this event. John Perks and Geoffrey Wortley have done a splendid job on the outside lights at the church. The lantern above the gate was in a poor state of repair and they have had it restored to its former glory and they also managed to get the spotlight outside the church to work again. Big thanks to both of them, they both work so hard to keep the church in a good state of repair.

The rain held off and an enjoyable time was had, particularly by the children. £745 was raised for church funds thanks to the hard work of helpers. New this year was a selection of popular songs sung by members of the Benefice Choir and others and accompanied by Michael Cartwright.

The runner bean season is upon us, and if you have excess, how about trying Spiced Pickled Runner Beans? Then you can enjoy them again in the winter. It is really a cross between a pickle and a chutney. Wait at least a month before eating it, and more if you can be patient – it really does get better and better!

Spiced Pickled Runner Beans2lbs (900gms) runner beans, weighed after trimming and slicing

(slice very thinly, or more thickly for a chunkier pickle)1½ lbs (700 gms) onions, chopped small

1½ pints (850 ml) vinegar – any kind, each gives a slightly different flavour1½ ozs (40 gms) cornflour

1 heaped tablespoon mustard powder 1 rounded tablespoon turmeric

8 ozs (225 gms) soft brown sugar1 lb (450 gms) demerara sugar (though I have made it with ordinary granulated,

and it seemed fine)

1. Put the chopped onions into a large pan with 10 fl ozs (275 ml) of the vinegar. Simmer gently for about 20 minutes until the onions are soft.

2. Whilst they are cooking, cook the beans in boiling salted water for 5 minutes. Strain and put them in with the onions.

3. In a small basin mix the cornflour, mustard and turmeric with a little of remaining vinegar, and add to the onion mixture.

4. Pour in the rest of the vinegar and simmer everything for 10 minutes.

5. Stir in both lots of sugar till dissolved, then simmer again for another 15 minutes.

6. Pot the pickle in warm, sterilised jars, and seal and label when cold.

Makes about 8 jars.
